Does anyone know if it's possible to do the trip without flying? Any chance of hopping on a boat of some kind etc? Reply to this

I tried the boat option and found it almost impossible to arrange. Whilst it would be great to travel overland, I think flying is your best option, and there are number of budget airlines doing the trip to Darwin or other Australian cities... Reply to this

Unless you have experience sailing and contacts its going to be impossible. If you had sailing or sea experience and listed yourself as a crew member with all the sailing clubs in Aus up to a few years in advance, are willing to pay for food while you are onboard you may (million to one shot) find someone who may be in the area enroute but as in your other thread, without the proper documentation no one is going to let you step foot on their boat. Theres the Darwin to Ambon race each year so boats will be in the area and returning but they will have their crews already organised and will not pick up hitchers....its not worth the hassle with customs, cabin space is at a premium and sailing is something that requires a crew that know eachother and work well together. Last time I did a Darwin to Ambon we had lots of locals and backpackers asking for lifts to Aus...the answer for all the above reasons was obviously no. Reply to this
