Ladies out there, small hairdryer or no Hair Dryer?

Is it worth taking a small travel hairdryer or would it be pointless?

Hiya ladies,

I have shoulder length hair which is defo easier to tie up etc but I hate having wet hair and letting it dry naturally if it's going to take hours. I'm starting off in China for a month then Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

I've seen very small hairdryers on ebay, is it worth taking one or am I gonna find I don't use it or some hostels may have one if I'm desperate?

I've done so well with my what I'm packing but am just stuck on this issue now.

Thanks 😊 Reply to this

Most of the time I don't take one with me as most of the hotels have one... But if I know that I will really need to blow dry my hair properly for and occasion I do take my own...

If you do backpacking doesn't worth it to take one - it will just take place and most of the time you wont have the time to use it. Just make sure you'll go to the hairdresser before and ask her to fix your hair for a natural look for traveling so you would not need to blow dry it and can dry naturally.

My hair is lightly curly and it's been cut be both way - blow dry or just let it go...

Have a nice trip,
ma'ri

Hi! I've tried bringing a small hair dryer with me but it was just a waste of time, it doesn't really dry my hair properly. So I suggest just don't take it with you, it'll just take up some space on your bag, for sure there are available hair dryers in the hostels. 😊 Goodluck on your backpacking trip!

I didnt bring one and I lasted 4 months until I couldnt take the mess anymore and bought one when I was away!!!! I then only used it once or twice to do my hair in the space of 8 months BUT It came in very handy in Bolivia/Peru, where it was freezing with no heating, so we used it to heat the bed at night!!!!

I dont think its worth it - you will tie your hair up in the hot places anyway. Reply to this

Yeah, I find that in SE Asia my hair dries really quickly all by itself. And I've always thought that a hairdryer would be unnecessary heat in all this humidity.

Although it might fight the frizz sometimes! But if you're travelling you won't care about frizzy hair that much!

Kate is right...I'm shocked at how fast my hair dries in the warmer climates...and I have really really long hair. Which usually goes up in a pony instantly due to humidity and sweat! For me, hairdryers or other hair implements are a waste of time and cumbersome to bring, not to mention all the electrical converters you'll have to bring along too. Enjoy the travel and don't worry so much about your hair. Reply to this

Call ahead and ask if the hotel provides blowdryers. If not and you can't live without one....buy one when you arrive. For me it's one of my comforts. Don't try to buy adapters or european (in my case) blow dryers before your trip buy one there it's much easier. I've wasted alot of money on adapters and half the time they don't work. Reply to this

I'd definately leave it..

I took one with me and to be fair it was helpful in S America when it was freezing and I didn't want to have wet hair for hours on end, but as soon as I got to Australia and it was hot I ditched it as it's just not worth carting one around, your hair dries so quickly in the heat anyway.

actually the problem is that even when you take hair dryer with you on travel, it depends on the climate of the place that you are going, the places that are too humid like dubai , pakistan or africa it is simply useless to take a dryer as the moment you step in the heated outdoors, your hair will spring back to their old position, only if you stay indoors and in ac, then your hair will be in control

in such places like india, pakistan, bangladesh and even dubai, you can let your hair dry naturally as the sun is so strong that it will dry your hair within minutes and in these places, people use dryer very rarely as sun does the job for them. hope you find it useful

Oh and there are places where electricity is different and hair dryers can be extremely dangerous. My Colombian wife bought hers with her when we moved back to Australia.Australian voltage is higher and it started shooting sparks straight away.I cut the chord off n put it in bin ,much to her distress.
Its not worth the risk. Reply to this

I would not take one either. Just got back from South East Asia and South America. In most parts of South East Asia, it would be pointless to blowdry your hair straight with the humidity - just put some product in there and let it do what it wants. 😊 You'll be too busy having fun anyways to waste time with your hair. I'm just back from trip and I did not have any hairdryer with me and in the hotels neither. Could make it - with a bit of frustration, but in the heat and humidity would be useless to have one with me and I did not talk about the dust yet.
