South America » Argentina » Santa Fe » Rosario March 1st 2010

When I first got to Argentina, I didn't really have plans to go to Rosario. Not that I wasn't interested, but the guidebooks seem to skip over Rosario, and I didn't meet many other backpackers that were heading that way. However, in Patagonia, I met two different hostel workers that both insisted I go see Rosario (where they were originally from). Then, in Ushuaia, I was sharing a room with a girl from Rosario, who insisted that I go to Rosario. She said she LOVED her city, everything about it was amazing, and that I must go. Decision made! I managed to find an incredibly cheap last minute flight out of Ushuaia to Buenos Aires. The only catch was that it landed in Buenos Aires at two in the morning. I landed in Buenos Aires, got ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 31st 2010

I arrived in Ushuaia from El Calafate via LADE flight. During the summer season in Patagonia, it is difficult to find a flight down to Ushuaia from El Calafate, so I was lucky to have found a flight - it was actually less expensive to fly down there, as well as saving me two days on the bus. Touched down in Ushuaia, and as expected, it was cold and rainy even though it was the middle of January (yes, this is their summer season). Rocked up to the Freestyle hostel where I had a reservation. Very nice hostel, great staff, heated floors, and amazing views of the bay from both the common room and my dorm room. After dropping my pack, I went out to Kaupe restuarant for Fuegian Lamb, so amazing! Good start to Ushuaia. ... read more

South America » Argentina January 20th 2010

After Puerto Madryn, I took a bus to El Calafate to see the famous glacier, Perito Moreno. Took a taxi to the hostel called Marco Polo Inn - usually I try to walk to save a few pesos, but I had just come off an overnight bus and another day bus, and was too exhausted to hike up hill in the wind at the cold. To get from Puerto Madryn I had to take an overnight bus to Rio Gallegos (which yes, is south of El Calafate), then take a bus from Rio Gallegos back up to El Calafate - needless to say, I was quite tired after all that busing! Also, you couldn't reserve ahead the Rio Gallegos - El Calafate route, so when I arrived in Rio Gallegos in the morning, I couldn't actually ... read more

After leaving Bariloche, I headed down to Patagonia. Patagonia was the part of my trip that I was most looking forward to. While planning my trip to South America, I was overwhelmed with the possibilities of South America. Its such a vast, amazing continent, with so much to see - the beaches in Colombia, the Andes mountains in Ecuador and Peru, the salt flats in Bolivia, the famous hospitality of Chile, the beauty of Brazil - but for some reason, seeing Patagonia was something that interested me the most (maybe my love of mountains?), and it did not fail to disappoint. When I was in Pucon, Chile, I read Bruce Chatwin's "In Patagonia" to get myself hyped for Patagonia, and it made me even more excited to see the mountains, lakes, small towns, and of course, ... read more

South America » Chile January 15th 2010

After Valparaiso, I headed on a bus south to Pucon, Chile, as I had heard about the beautiful volcano there. I arrived at the hostel in Pucon, which was actually a family's old converted house, called Donde German Hostel. It was in a beautiful setting, with a big backyard with an amazing view of the hostel. The family running the hostel was very nice, and the hostel owner (German) even drove a group of us to the bus station in the morning to catch our respective buses. The town was a bit quiet, but it was nice to unwind for a couple of days. I hung out in the town for two days, renting a bike both days and taking long rides around the town. Managed to get a (little) lost on the first day, but ... read more

From Buenos Aires, I hopped on a night bus to Mendoza, arriving there early in the morning. The nightbus was great, a Don Otto bus, complete with fully reclining beds, movies and pretty good food. My first day in Mendoza, I went white water rafting down the river. This was my first time rafting. The river bed was apparently quite low, which I actually was happy about, given that I had no prior experience. Made it down the river safe and sound! The next day in Mendoza, I went to the Pascaul Toso winery outside of town. It was absolutely beautiful, and I was lucky enough to be a small private tour with only two other people. Learned a lot of interesting things about the winery and wine in general. Am definately excited to pick up ... read more

After saying my goodbyes to Ashley in Rio, I boarded a plane to Montevideo in Uraguay to meet up with Valen, my Canadian friend from Toronto that I met in Mancora, Peru and travelled all the way to Cuzco with. I spent my first day in Montevideo walking around the city. Montevideo is also another beautiful South American city, lots of plazas and beautiful buildings. The next day, Valen arrived, as well as Iona and Heidi, who she had been travelling with. That night, we went out for an amazing steak dinner (seems to be a recurring pattern for me in South America) in the Mercado by the port with Steve and Greg, who we had met at the hostel we were staying at, Hostel Red. The waiter even threw in some local wine for us ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires December 3rd 2009

What could be better than meeting one of your besties in South America for a couple of weeks of fun in the sun? If you figure it out, let me know!!! I left Salta, and took a night bus to Buenos Aires to meet Ashley, who was flying in from Vancouver to spend almost three weeks with me - our planned route being Buenos Aires, Iguaza Falls, and Rio. I arrived in Buenos Aires a night before Ashley was to arrive, only to find that the hostel that I had booked us in at had lost our reservation. I managed to find a hostel nearby our planned hostel, that more or less resembled a refuge camp . . . good times! Made the most of it and picked up Ashley from the airport on a Friday ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta December 3rd 2009

After San Pedro de Atacama, Esther, Lindsey, Carol and I took a bus to Salta, Argentina. Salta in a beautiful city in the northeast of Argentina, a city of about half a million people. We stayed at a nice hostel with a pool (essential, since it easily hits 35 degrees during the day in the spring). We spent our days in Salta shopping, sitting in cafes on the main plaza enjoying the local Salta beer, and going out for long dinners with steak and wine. Salta was my first experience of what Argentianian dining has to offer - i.e. amazing steak, pasta (due to the Italian influence on Argentina), and wine, and incredibly affordable prices. On our last day in Salta, we also took the telerifico up to the top of the hill in Salta, and ... read more

Our salt flat tour dropped us off in San Pedro de Atacama, and small town in the Northern Chile. As soon as we got off the bus, we met Simply Red, or, the owner (?) of Hostel Flordia. Yes, his name is Simply Red, he told us to call him that. Checked into the hostel and wound up spending three nights in this great little town. On the first night, Esther, Lyndsey, Carol, Rhod (who we met on the salt flat tour), went out for dinner at La Casona (which Rhod and I discovered earlier in the afternoon when looking for a place to get some afternoon drinks at). Great little restauarant with a nice patio out back and a fire pit. After La Casona we headed out to another bar, called "Milagro" for some late ... read more
