Too many countries not enough lives

or, The more I travel the more I want to see!

I'm sure I can't be the only one who has this feeling - no wonder so many people are on here asking for advice about where to go next.
It seems that the more I travel the more my list of places I want to visit grows. I want to revisit most of the places I've been before and yet there are so many places out there I have never set foot. Then you meet people travelling who tell you amazing stories about where they've been, so you think ooh yeah I want to go there too. Plus I'm obsessed with reading books/watching films based on travels or foreign countries so then I'm inspired by them and more places go on the list!
Even places I've never been keen on before are sneaking into my consciousness now. Take India, never thought I'd want to go there a few years back, but previous travels give you confidence, you see the photos of other people who have been there, I've got into yoga, and suddenly bam India is nagging in the back of my brain as another place I must experience!
Sorry I'm rambling, it's 7 weeks until I go away again (back to old places and on to new too) and I'm bursting with excitement for the whole travel thing again! It's bad though, I've not even left and already I'm planning for a lifetime's worth of travels after this coming trip! Reply to this

Yes, I can relate to this excitement! Again there is always a dilemma or whether to return to favourite places or explore something new. I usually opt for something new. However, these needn't be exclusive - you can return to a favourite country yet see different areas. For example, I'm returning to Ethiopia and Kenya this year; during my 2 weeks in Ethiopia the only place I've visited before is the capital Addis Ababa, as that is where my plane arrives and departs from; whereas for my 3 weeks in Kenya - apart from Nairobi, there is only one place I am visiting (for 3 days) that I have seen previously.

The other option is to visit the same places again, but that is always tempered by the one rule I make when travelling, and that is to always visit a new country during each journey - it might only be a stopover somewhere - but it will always involve a new visa stamp in my passport 😉

What sort of activities do you prefer (adventure, history, cultural)? This is always a good guide as to where to visit next. Reply to this

Dreaming of travel is all part of the fun for me. If i dream about it and then achieve it, i feel such a great deal of accomplishment. I'll keep dreaming and dreaming. I have 26 days before i travel again and yeah, its getting exciting. Lots to see, so little money but i am happy spending the little i have on what i can see. As long as they don't start charging me to watch sunsets then i'll be happy. Reply to this

totally feeling like this too. We just came back from a year round the world, had an amazing time and i just want more. Constantly think about being away and doing exactly the same things, scouting out new places to go that will last a lifetime.
On the flip side, I remember meeting a young man on our trip in Indonesia on the gili islands who was selling jewellery, he asked us what we were doing and i told him we were on a years traveling and making a list of all the places we will visit. He came from Lombok and had never been anywhere else, we had just come across more of his country that he might ever see in his lifetime and it was only a small part of our trip. I suddenly felt quite ashamed of myself because i have been so more fortunate to have had such opportunities that most people will never get and there was me sitting writing something like a shopping list as if it was the most normal thing in the world. I feel very very lucky, but still want more! Reply to this

Hi everyone, it's so good there are places like Travelblog to know you're not the only one feeling the way you do!

I like your approach to the dilemma Shane, I think mine's similar. I'll be going back to South Africa to one of my favourite ever destinations for a week, and then on to new places for the rest of the trip to get the new experiences and passport stamps!

I suddenly felt quite ashamed of myself because i have been so more fortunate to have had such opportunities that most people will never get and there was me sitting writing something like a shopping list as if it was the most normal thing in the world. I feel very very lucky, but still want more!

That's exactly the feeling! We are so privileged to have the opportunities we do. I need to give myself a kick and accept that while I may never tick off everywhere on my ever-growing list, I will still have had an amazing time trying and should be extremely grateful for that.

As long as they don't start charging me to watch sunsets then i'll be happy

I second that! Reply to this

This site is great and horrible at the same time! The more you travel the more you realise how much there is to see and how much you haven't seen. I feel lucky to have been to quite a few places - but when you enter them into the visited countries map it turns out i have only been to 25% (ish) of the world! And that 25% is only scatching the surface of those places too.
Ideally (and it is a pipe dream) I would like to try and visit everywhere before I can't travel any more but more than likely that will never happen and as time runs out I will probably opt to re-visit places i really liked in the past! Especially now we are working full time - with 4 weeks holiday a year it is nigh impossible to get far afield and explore in depth for any length of time!
All I can say is that travel broadens the mind and the more you do it the better person you are for it in the end!

I always take the view of being thankful for what I have, so when people ask me "Don't you get bored in Australia, wouldn't you like to travel all the time?", I consider how fortunate I am to have an Australian Passport and be in government employment that allows me flexibility in accruing my holidays and taking leave at half pay - which enables me to take my holidays in one 6-8 week block. So I am very lucky, as life could be far different.

I've met educated, intelligent and diligent people is many countries I've travelled to and they only earn a few dollars a day. Even given the cheaper cost of living in those countries, the opportunity of travelling outside of their homeland is denied to them. Reply to this

Yes, it also seems to me that there are too many countries and not enough lives, but I like it that way, because I wouldnt want to run out of places or get bored because of not enough variety to choose from.

Because of sometimes not being able to decide between a number of options, I have to toss a coin, and then force myself to do what the coin says instead of letting more possiblilites start to confuse the issue again. Reply to this
