Some tips if you are traveling in India, always carry a pepper spray and a swiss knife or a pair of sharp scissors.

I am not sure I could bring myself to spray somebodies eyes, or stab them with a sharp object, even if they were pawing me.

My friend use to teach abroad and told be he got held up at gun point by a cab driver in Thailand. He said, first thing that came to mind was open the door roll out and bolt. Reply to this

Not at this point - but I bought a 45, because I will be in bear country camping this summer. Reply to this

When I was staying at an Indian village in the moutains in Guatamala, I used to carry a stick if I was walking around at night. The domestic dogs there were placid during the day, but at night turned into pack animals that would stalk people and snarl at them. When they got too close, I used to poke the stick in their direction to keep them at a distance. Reply to this

I would never carry a weapon ... not even in my own city. Just think, if you get it taken away from you and used against you. Of course, I like to think my martial arts training will kick in if I ever need it and I will be the one using some unfortunate fellows weapon against him :-) I'm in no hurry though. Reply to this

Anyone who is afraid to use the weapon should never carry one for the reason you just stated. Reply to this

Several years ago, I (lone female) was approached by 3 men in Portugal who tried to rob me of my belongings. To make a very long story short, I was walking around with all my bags late at night, and I didn't even know I was lost. These are all very bad things that could have been avoided in the first place, so I recommend being much more cautious than I was. When the 3 approached me, I defended myself with a Swiss Army Knife (previously only used for opening wine and cutting bread and cheese). I did get away with all my stuff, but I do think I'm lucky. As pointed out before, the knife could have been used against me, or they could have had guns. Prior to this incident I had always said I would never fight for my stuff, it was all old and not worth getting injured or killed over. In the instant that it happened though, another more primal instinct came over me and I ended up stabbing one fellow in the hand, and slicing another on the arm. The third just faded away into the background after the others started shouting and swearing in Portugese. My fiancee and I have just completed 15 months travelling in Africa, and never had any issues. I think this was a case of bad judgment from the beginning and I was lucky to get away as I did. Weapons are NOT a good idea in any country. Firstly, you may be breaking that countries laws, second, in any given situation the weapon could be used against you. Doing a martial art would be your best option. Reply to this

Do you do a martial art, Bartron? If so, which one and have you ever used it in a situation where you needed to defend yourself? Reply to this

Ladies check this out: www.no-contact.com this jacket shocks your assailant. There are also knuckle shockers which I think would come in handy if you wanted to pay back someone for a demeaning comment, lol! Reply to this

Goodness me! Not sure I would want to give the rude comment maker an electric shock just because he does not know how to give compliments that sound nice to women. :D

But, really I would not be bothered with buying any of that gear. Physical assaults against me have not happened often enough or been severe enough to make it necessary.

I think when a very serious assault happens to a women it is just very bad luck that she came in contact with such a man. Reply to this

Hi Mell, I doubt I would purchase those items, too. I did think it was a pretty funny idea... I mean can you imagine a subway situation, lol. Although, I do think carrying a zapper of some sort might be a good idea. And I wouldn't have a problem clawing someone's eyes out if I had to.... or pepper spraying them. I know, I know I'm a barbarian... ))))).

Most assailants are so successful because they don't expect you to fight back or resist in any way...and when you do they are more surprised then you are.

There are some you tube videos for basic self defense moves... like how to free yourself from certain grasps, what to do if someone comes up behind you.... things that are pretty simple but might come in handy one day.

I think the guy who gives you the reason to do these things, is the barbarian. But the barbarians would problably object to that comment. :D Reply to this
