Los Roques, bohemian paradise...
Published: July 14th 2010South America » Venezuela » Insular » Los RoquesSorry to arrive quite late with our first South American entry....but we have been either running... or either without any connection the last few days. Our first flight was from Madrid to Caracas on Iberia. Let me tell you I was not really expecting anything good about Iberia...they have a terrible reputation, and we found it out right at check-in with a very non-smiling staff. But we did get lucky as Ma'ri and I both ended up upgraded at the gate...always nice, nice seat, even better wine....an easier way to survive nine hours on a a plane. Caracas is not a safe place, and I was very aware of this prior to our visit. So no time to put ourselves in dangerous situation. We had a pick-up at the airport, arriving late afternoon to bring us ... read more

The archipelago adventure - Venezuela
Published: July 4th 2008South America » Venezuela » Insular » Los RoquesArriving at the airport in Caracas at 6.30am (remember we have had very little “sleep” at the airport) we are immediately faced with the biggest problem in this country!!! We have no local currency or dollars with us and the cash points at the airport do not accept our cards. We had read that there are two exchange rates used in the country - the official at 3.7 and the unofficial - what ever any one wants to use!!!! We swiftly discover that holding pounds means that we will get stung as Venezuela seems to have a grudge against our currency. The Euro trades at 3.2! Obviously no one can do maths here! We know we are getting screwed but we have no choice to exchange money from a local tout (common practice here) and manage ... read more
Entre idas ,vueltas , buscando precios y demás ... read more
The next 5 days followed a similar theme so I'll give a run down of a typical day on Los Rocques. Wake up at about 8am for breakfast. This consisted of melon, venezuelan bread thingies with cheese and ham (yes and, not or), eggs, pancakes and some cakey type fellas. Topped up with juice and coffee it was time for the first of 18 applications of suncream. Pack your bag and chill out in the Posada before chatting to Enrique as to where to spend the day. The choice was generally a variety of deserted beaches - with a snorkelling option if desired. Once the route was sorted off to the pier to be picked up in the boat by the 2 lads. We couldn't pronounce their names so refered to them as Cuthbert (drove the ... read more
Take me down to Paradise city
Published: June 25th 2008South America » Venezuela » Insular » Los RoquesMr Cool rocked up fashionably late and helps us check in to our flight over to Los Rocques. The wife was extremely excited at the prospect of spending an extended period on the island archipelago - despite being in the airport i was already applying the suncream. The plane was small and noisey but the view out of the window was impressive. A distinct line where the reef begins signals the gateway to the islands and the onset of the bright turquoise water. The airstrip is relatively short and not for the nervous. The airport facilities at Los Rocques limited to a hut and a bench. We paid our park entry fee and met the chap from our posada who kindly helped us with our bags. At Posada Cigala we were met by Enrique, the epitomy ... read more
... read more
