the best thing i saw today, without doubt was a poster of big man chavez. it was him, with a massive grin on his face, holding a baseball bat as if he was about to swing it. glorious. today was also the 2nd time i had walked into a chavez rally of sorts. venezuela has elections coming up, and in plaza bolivar today there was a live band and whatnot, with pretty much everyone wearing red tshirts. hilariously enough, today i wore a red tshirt as well. today was certainly the right day to wear red in caracas. so yes, this [View Full Entry]

this entry was originally going to be one line long, because it sounds so bizarre, but then i suppose i´m doing too much to justify that. either way, i´ll start with the aforementioned line, and then get into the details. last night i went out for drinks with my host, a pole dancer and the most german guys ever, and watched venezuela´s version of ozzy osbourne cover iron maiden, led zeppelin, metallica and the stones. and by gum it was hilarious. but we´ll go back to where it was left last i guess, which was friday night. we went out to [View Full Entry]

The shouts of several dozens of fishermen woke me up and threw me right back into reality. A reality that I must admit was for once very pleasant - despite the fact that my sleeping bag was full to the limit with sand. Close by I could hear the waves hitting the shore and as I opened my eyes I could see the pink sun rising in the east. A flashback from the night before reminded me of rum, dancing to african drums, midnight swims and stars so clear I remeber thinking I must be dreaming. The weekend trip to Chuao [View Full Entry]

We're here, we made it - overland from Buenos Aires to Caracas in 4 months, more or less on or following the world's largest mountain range. When we've been sat waiting for hours at bus terminals we devised a way to amuse ourselves and here are the results... We have: * Visited 8 countries * Been to the world's driest dessert * Been to the world's largest and highest salt flats * Visited one of the seven wonders of the world * Crossed the equator (stood on it, hopped over it, straddled it) * Been from zero meters above sea level [View Full Entry]

We said goodbye to the Andes via a 2 hour true winding mountain road through spectacular scenery - huge steep mountains dropping down into a deep gorge. With every metre we descended the temperature rose until eventually we were in hot, dry Barinas. We did the rounds of bus companies for the last time, looking for ones that go overnight to Caracas and secured our tickets for our last South American bus. With over 12 hours to kill we found somewhere to dump off our big rucksacks and caught a local bus into the town centre where we spent the rest [View Full Entry]

It´s funny how life tends to work out. Of course in order for life to¨work out¨life usually had to have thrown you a few curveballs...and probably beaned you with one or two of them... But since I´ve resolved to be the glass half full type this morning, I´ll focus on the good stuff - namely that I have finally embarked on an escursion. SO! sans sense and sensibility - and the major working of a plan - i find myself in Venezuela. I wish I could say that I am well prepared and have planned this to the hilt, but that [View Full Entry]

Here I am in Caracas- finding it horrendously expensive even though I´m not paying for accommodation. Should be leaving fairly soon. I´ve been having a great time and have been accompanied most of the time by various hospitality club and couchsurfing members, so that´s been great fun. I´ve tasted the national beer, Polar, and I can safely say it´s far nicer than Brazilian beer, ha ha... I´ve already been hauled in by the police and had to wipe lots of photos from my camera because I was apparently in a restricted zone. On Monday night David met me at the airport [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Caracas yesterday afternoon and was almost instantanously overjoyed by the ensuing heat. My plane journey was anything but uneventful! Firstly when I arrived at the airport I checked in and the lady behind the desk said something about tax, I thought oh great more expense, but I went into a side office and they gave me 60,000 pesos (just under 20 pounds), confused but a good start. Most of the plane was filled up with the crew of Pop Idol Latin America, I was sat next to two of the camera men, one was a hottie!! They were all [View Full Entry]
