I was glad to leave Ushuaia, where the highest temperture during summer is only 10°C! But it was not yet time to leave the south, my next stop was in Patagonia, El Calafate and El Chalten. It took a while to get there as I had to take a bus to Rio Gallegos on the east coast crossing through Chile again before heading west to Calafate. I finally arrived at 2 am in a really nice hostel and going straight to bed. The next morning I was looking forward just to relax and take in the beautiful scenery around me. And it was also time to organise the rest of my trip, I booked a tour for the next day to see the glacier, a hike in El Chalten and the buses up north. The following ... read more

On Christmas Day I catched the bus to Bariloche in the Lake District. Bariloche and its surroundings are full of possible day trips and therefore I decided to spend some time here. I arrived after another 20 hour bus drive and got into a really nice hostel with an astonishing view over the lake and the mountains in the background. I took it easy and relaxed for the day before checking out all the possible trips. The first trip the next day lead me to Mount Tronador (Thunder Mountain). After pick up we drove to the National Park and stopped first for a little hike to a waterfall. Following that the road lead further into the park along the shore of a lake, where we stopped for taking pictures of the views. Finally after lunch we ... read more

The 3 weeks tour with the group came to an end in La Paz and it was time to say goodbye to the comfortable travelling, where I did not need to be concerned about where I will be staying and how to book a tour. I had a great 3 weeks but now I was on my own again. My way lead me further south of Bolivia to Uyuni and the famous Salt Desert. I spend one more day in La Paz (trying to find the famous San Pedro Prison and I actually did find it) before I headed south with a night bus. The next morning I arrived in Uyuni, a small town in the middle of nowhere. I was picked up at the bus station but had to wait another 3 hours before I ... read more

Before I started this trip, I was sure that I wanted to see Machu Picchu and do the Inca trail, but there is a 3 months in advance reservation required. After further investigations I decided to join a tour for 3 weeks, so that I was sure to do the Inca Trail and have some company for a while. Even though I must say it is very easy to travel around Southamerica alone, I always meet people heading the same direction. So there we go, a group of 7 meet in Lima to join this 3 weeks tour through Peru to Bolivia. After a day in Lima, which was just another city, we headed down south to Paracas and to the Ballestas Islands. We got up the next morning and took a cruise around the islands ... read more

Quite, nesteled between Volcanos and Mountains with a elevation of nearly 3000m, is not only an amazing city but also the exit point for many tours. Again there are so many options and too little time to do everything so that I had to decide on only one trip. As time did not allow to see the Galapagos Island (I need to come back for this...) I decided to do a trip to the Amazon. I soon found the perfect trip and was sitting in a bus the same evening to get to Lago Agrio, where I will be picked up to start the adventure. I arrived at 5.30 am and had to wait until 9 am to be picked up, in a sleepy little town with nothing to do.... Well, somehow time went by and ... read more

I decided to stay a couple of days in Bogota not only to catch up with emails and blog entries, but also to meet a friend who was on business in Bogota. The first day I spent more or less in the internet cafe and in the evening we discovered the night life of Bogota, going to the Zona Rosa for dinner. I felt save in Bogota, against all the stories I heard before, because at any corner there was a police man or military guy. I really enjoy the city even though it was high up and I needed to adjust to the altitude a bit. On the following day I was lucky with the weather and enjoyed blue sky and sunshine while going up to Monserrat for a spectacular view over the city. I ... read more

It has been a while since the last blog but time flies by so fast when travelling! Finally it was time to move around in Southamerica and discover this beautiful place! I started off with a flight from Rio to Caracas. It was such an amazing flight, as I saw Rio from above by night, which was very impressive. After a stop over in Sao Paulo I landed in time in Caracas at 4.30 am in the morning. I have booked a trip to Los Roques and it was now the advanture to find the domestic airport to catch my flight at 6.30 am. This was definitely an advanture as it turns out that the airport is 1 km away from where I landed and there was no bus or anything going there, and walking in ... read more

After the 2 weeks in Florianopolis, a rather sleepy town, it was time to see the famouse places of Rio! I was looking forward to Ipanema, Copacabana, the Christ and many more. But first I stopped at Sao Paulo, as it would have been a 18 hours journey going direct to Rio. Sao Paulo was really just a stop over, it is an industrial city and not much to see. Also it was time to adjust to higher prices again, it seems nearly as expensive as in Switzerland! I just stayed for one night and wasn't too sad to leave the next day as it was pouring down with rain (the following days were even worse, glad I left before the big storm came...). Rio welcomed us with sunshine! We started off with a meeting with ... read more

After 5 weeks in Buenos Aires and some cold weather, I was ready for sunshine and an increase in temperature! I left Buenos Aires on an overnight coach to Foz de Iguazu, the famouse waterfalls on the border to Brazil and Paraguay. The bus journey was actually very comfortable as the seats were nearly as a seat in the first class compartment in a plane! So I kind of arrived relaxed and with enough sleep in Port de Iguazu, where sun was shining and 25 C welcomed me, dropped off the luaggage in the hostel I stayed for the night and went off to see the falls together with 2 other girls, who were on the trip as well! It took about 45 minutes until we reached the entrance to the National Park and another 30 ... read more

It has been a while since my last blog entry and in the meantime I have started the volunteer programm. After enjoying 3 weeks of the touristy side of BsAs, I was about to learn a different side of this city. I have been travelling through many countries in this world and have seen a lot of poverty. Most of the time you just see the poor people on the street but not what is happening behind these streets. This time I got the opportunity not only to better understand and learn what actully is done (or not) to help the poor people of a country but also to be hands on where help is needed. One of BsAs quarter, La Boca, is known for football but also the famouse colored houses in El Caminito. Every ... read more
