Lauren, Rebeka from Sweden, who Lauren met in Mankara, and I decided to go on a snorkeling trip off of Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. We hired a boat for an afternoon, who would provide a guide and show us the best places to explore. The boat zipped us out of the harbor where all the cruise ships anchor. The day was a bit stormy with large full clouds marbling the sky and wind that pushed up mounding white caps. The boat stopped in front of a golden sandy beach where sea lions and marine iguanas rested on the rocks. We slipped into the slightly cold water and started paddling against the currant, which was threatening to pull us out of the bay. When I put my head under the water I was met ... read more

Well I know I haven’t written in a while to keep everybody updated on what I’ve been doing but I have been chugging along just doing the normal thing here on the island. I’ve been running, biking, hiking with a heavy pack in the mornings to train for climbing Cotopaxi and just to stay in shape! Which is a hard thing to do, It is so hot and sunny here during the day that you just feel like doing nothing! It makes having to teach classes in a tie a pretty big drag. I am constantly sweating which I don’t like too much! For me if I’m sitting and sweating then it’s time to chill at the beach not teach classes… lol. But yeah nothing to exciting has happened within the last couple of months that ... read more

Day 8 - Our life on the boat would come to an end in the morning. We docked at Santa Cruz. Our morning, and last excursion would take us to the Darwin Station. The Charles Darwin Research Station was established in 1964. It is a great place to visit, to learn about marine conservation as well as terrestrial conservation. We got to watch a short movie, which featured land and marine critters. Also, the station places emphasis on keeping the Galapagos Islands preserved. A real treat was seeing Lonesome George. Lonesome George is the last known Pinta Island Tortoise. There are eleven subspecies of Galapagos Tortoises that are native to the islands. George was seen on Pinta Island back in 1971, and it was decided to relocate him for safety reasons since Pinta Island's vegetation had ... read more

Day 1 - We flew from Quito to Baltra island on a 727 jet. I had visions of flying to Baltra on a puddle jumper, but I was wrong. I was hoping to see Iguanas being chased off the runway, as I had heard these stories. The only creature I saw at the airport (besides tourists) were Lizards. We were ferried over to Santa Cruz Island. Our ferry ride was entertaining, we saw a Sea Lion sitting on a dinghy and 2 Sea Turtles mating. We finally arrived at our boat. I took this trip through Gap Adventures. Our boat (Gap Adventures I) also known as Pelikano was large enough for 16 tourists and 8 crew members. Perfect for me, I wouldn't want to have been on a large cruise ship as they can't get around ... read more

All right well it has been a while since I have written a travel blog and climbing Puntudo and biking up around Bellavista occurred a couple of weeks back. School has been going the same not to much is happening during the school day now I am a teacher assistant because the other teacher returned. This is soooo nice! I feel I am actually helping more… I basically work more one on one with the teacher help with pronounciation of words and explain things in English that she may not understand… then she can refer this information to the students. The two months that I was teaching alone was a good experience and I did enjoy it! I just didn’t enjoy always having to discipline the kids and always having them misbehave! I bleive thanksgiving is ... read more

Before flying out to the Galápagos Islands, we spent a week in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. We will add a separate blog entry for Quito after our Galápagos entry. The Galápagos Islands were most definitely the highlight of our trip so far. While being expensive, we think that they were worth every cent. The Galápagos is a surreal place, with strangely tame animals lazing around everywhere. The animals are the main reason for visiting the Islands; they indirectly made the Islands famous by being so unique and influencing Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution. It was specifically the Islands´ mockingbirds that the young Darwin had taken back with him that caused him to start speculating about evolution. One really appreciates that this is one of the last few places left on earth where ... read more

Trying to work out where I last got to with my blog has been quite a challenge as I haven’t updated it for over a month. A lot of great things have happened in the last few weeks and I have been rereading my travel journal to remind myself of everything I have been doing. The last entry I wrote was when a friend got back from a guiding trip and that seems like a long time ago. Since then a lot has changed as I moved in with two girlfriends, the other volunteers I was working with left and I have been working up at the farm a lot more. Firstly the change of apartment has been great as I am now living with a Chilean called Paola who I work with at Bongo and ... read more

We have just returned from our 5 days in the Galapagos Islands and our time spent there can be summarised in one word: Amazing! Since beginning to plan our trip we were looking forward to the Galapagos as one of the major highlights and we were not disappointed. There are many ways to go about organising a trip to the islands. After much research and careful consideration we decided to book a 4 day cruise with Dreamkapture travel in Guayaquil. There is no way of getting around the fact that a trip to the Galapagos is going to be expensive but in the end we feel that it was money well spent. We flew in 1 day before the tour started and stayed in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. We spent the day walking around the ... read more

We left Puerto Viejo and headed for the Panama border; it turned out to be one of the more exciting border crossings. The bus let you off about 100 meters from this rickety looking bridge crossing a large river, on one side was Costa Rica and the other was Panama. You get your passport stamped and walk across the bridge to the Panama immigration office. It was the country that has asked the most questions about our travel plans and required us to show the most personal information. We had to show them our credit card to prove we had sufficient funds to travel, an onward ticket out of Panama and we had to buy a tourist card for $10 each. Some people didnt have a copy of an onward ticket and were forced to buy ... read more
