Well, needless to say I didn´t get much sleep last night...about an hour and a half until the phone rang informing us Javier would be there at 830/9am and the girl wanted to know when we wanted to have breakfast...I told her 8am. We had your standard Ecuadorean breakfast with fresh fruit, juice, tea, bread, jelly, and cheese. After breakfast we waited around a few minutes until Javier and his taxi driving friend picked us up. We headed into the highlands (I took a quick nap) to see the giant tortoises on his family´s property. 60 years ago when his father moved here, he asked the town where he could set a house, and they told him to go up into the highlands and claim a piece...FOR FREE!...so he picked up 200 hectares of farmland and ... read more

We woke up at 6am to grab breakfast at 6:45...fruit plate with some bread, cheese, juice, and coffee. After breakfast we headed to SCUBA Iguana for our dives today. We had to be there by 7:20 to make sure all the gear was ready. We met everyone else in our group of 8, hopped in the cabs, and headed to the other side of the island (near Baltra) to hop on the dive boat and head to Isla Beagle. After a 30 minute car ride, a 1.5 hour boat ride (which included naps by all) we finally made it to our first dive spot. To begin, we started with a checkout dive to 20 feet to make sure we had the correct amount of weights and to make sure we knew how to get our regulators ... read more

Continued from the last post... Sure enough, an hour into our trip, around 3:30, the bus pulls over again, this time at a National Ecuadorean Police Station where everyone is asked to get off the bus, show their passports and have their bags searched. Again, I was dead asleep and had trouble prying my weary eyes open for another midnight jaunt. I hopped out and waited in line with everyone else from the top deck...it looked like there were still about 8 people below sleeping who weren´t leaving the bus. Everyone handed over their passports one at a time, had their bags checked...it came to me, and I handed the girl my passport, and just waved me forward....didn´t even check my camelback I was carrying...and the whole while the cops are checking every nook and cranny ... read more

All islands in the Galapagos are a short boat ride apart, so day and weekend trips are easily arranged. My first trip was to Santa Cruz, which is one of the 4 inhabited islands and is the most highly established of those. It was about 4 times the size of San Cristobal, giving tourists much more access to hotels, restaurants, and daily activities. A group of my friends and I rented a boat to take us sport fishing. Around 11am I managed to reel in a 35 pound tuna fish, and by 2pm we were eating homemade sushi and tuna heart. We continued to troll around the island of Santa Fe, taking frequent swimming and suntanning breaks. We caught 7 fish throughout the whole day, and mine ended up being the biggest! That night we took ... read more

First hour! Amazing! The Galapagos have not disappointed us and we’ve only been here 1 day! Our flight in was spectacular over the lunar arid landscape of Isla Baltra. Within 5 minutes of being in our room (which, by the way, has a balcony which overlooks the sea) we spotted sea lions on the jetty, thousands of huge red crabs, marine iguanas, other iguanas, other crabs, countless types of birds and all in the most turquoise water you can imagine. Rest of Day 1 The afternoon was spent planning our next 10 days on the islands. There was so much to see and so little time (and limited funds of course). The day trips out are expensive, $120 each approx., and the flights to the other islands pricey too. But, we’re here for probably the only ... read more

Update from the land of giant tortoises - We went on a search this weekend for a cheap tour for the week after our last work week at the reserve, which is our last week in Galápagos. We didn´t have much luck in the port of San Cristobal, so we decided to take a ferry over to the bigger town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. We got here this morning and within one hour of being here we found a tour for an extremely good price, about 1/2 off the normal price! The trick is that it leaves today! So we´re off to spend the week cruising and snorkeling around the Galápagos on the Rumba. We´ll finish up our volunteering the week after and then head back to Quito on November 16th. We have next ... read more

Another long day today. Left the hotel at 7:45, treked to the pier then panga to the yacht. Hour and a half cruise to South Plaza Island. Sea was a bit calmer today, but it was cloudy all day. South Plaza Island is covered with this red plant that put me in mind of the red weed from H.G. Wells´War of the Worlds. It is also home to a colony of sealions right on the pier, and when we were coming back we had to wait for one of them to move off the pier so we could get back on our boat. Today was iguana and bird day again. We saw a bunch of marine iguanas (green with yellow paws) on the beach when we got off the boat and even managed to get a ... read more

Learning about and participating with other cultures is always an eye opening experience that can change one’s personal outlook on life and the world, give light to other perspectives and enhances one’s appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. These experiences can sometimes leave you rolling with laughter, feeling frustrated, lost, appreciative, speechless and amazed all at the same time. Here are some noteworthy aspects/experiences of Galapagean life I have noticed and hope that I always remember.... • ya mismo can signify right now or sometime next week (usually the latter) • at five o’clock most men can be found either playing basketball or volleyball in teams of three, using a soccer ball and basically just throwing it over the net - you can guess where all the women are...ugh • on Saturday everyone wakes up ... read more

Islas de Galapagos, Isla Baltra, 10-10-1990, Amsterdam, the ways of the Gods are incomprehensible to us humble human beings, we die after a life time of struggling the perils and trails of our excistence, the tribulations of moving through time and space, maybe all in vain, no cristian heaven or buddhist nirvana, just a dark void with no spiritual answers to our fragile minds. Try to see it from a different point of view, through the eyes of a different life form, whose young life will start without a parent or the safety of a modern delivery ward in a human hospital where help and maternal care is assured by the motivated nurses and well-paid gyneacologist... Instead you come to life as a mere hunble tortoise, cracking the leathery shell-like egg and working your way through ... read more
