Tuesday May 8th started with an early rise and the temptation to wake the woman who had woken us the day before. She was the hostel owners mother and had woken us up quite early the day before with loud knocking followed by 5 minutes of uncomprehendable Spanish before she finally gave up at our lack of understanding and walked away. Guess it wasn´t that important. We made our way to the dock to catch our 7:00 boat back to Santa Cruz. I had forgotten to put on my sea-sickness patch, so I popped a couple of pills hoping they would kick in. Another boat using the only dock spot delayed our departure so after the security people had cleared our bags (they check for fruits, veggies, etc.) Sarah went to grab a snack while I ... read more

Galapagos osa 3 Isla Santa Cruz Saavuttiin jo aikaseen lauantaina takas keskimmäiselle saarelle, joka kantaa tosiaan nimee Santa Cruz ja Puerto Ayora on siinä sijaitseva kylä. Oltiin varattu hostelli jo etukäteen niin meidän ei tarvinnu kummemin ressailla vaan saatiin heti huone ja päästiin vähän jatkaan lyhyeks jääneitä unia. Heräiltiin uudemman kerran ja käytiin aamupalalla kaikessa rauhassa. Oltiin suunniteltu päivälle vaan omatoimista palloilua, koska saarella on näyttäviä paikkoja ihan kävelymatkojen päässä. Galapagoksella on nähtävää myös sisäma... read more

Day 154 Tuesday 13th March Tried once more to sleep in but our hotel bed is so uncomfortable that it was better to be vertical and moving. First chore today was to get some washing done, and when Shelley enquired at the front desk, the apathetic receptionist told her they could do it but it wouldn’t be ready till 2pm tomorrow. When Shelley explained that we were checking out tomorrow morning he just shrugged as if “well that’s your problem”. The staff at this hotel have been by far the worse we have encountered on this trip, and we will be glad to be moving on tomorrow. We had spotted a laundry yesterday on our walk so we grabbed our large bag of smelly clothing and walked it the 5 blocks. As usual we ... read more

Bonjour mes amis! I hope you’ll excuse my awkward French, I am rather out of practice. Bringing you Thursday’s blog is none other than the girl whose awesomeness is surpassed only by her nerdiness (a fact that will become only too clear later on in this post). If you guessed Adrianne, you get a virtual GOLD STAR!!! You know it’s important because it’s all capitalized and stuff. By the way, I noticed that my family is shamefully ignorant of most nautical terms. I intend to rectify this. Starboard is the right side of the boat, Port is the left, Stern is the back, and Bow is the front of the boat. Of course, I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Today is not actually Thursday, so I sincerely apologize for any details that may or ... read more

The day started at an uncivilized hour with a wake up call from the front desk that the kids didn’t realize they’d have to answer in order to make the phone stop ringing; fantastic start to the day. We had an okay breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, the unfortunately, or perhaps aptly, named Colon. The day before we had lunch there: having scoped out our options it seemed to be the reasonable choice as a sign in front indicated that the buffet was $11.50 a person. We got our bill for over $100US and were flummoxed at Ecuadorian math until Adrianne pointed out the small(ish) print advising the $14.00 per person servico fee. For a buffet. Anyway, we had breakfast then took a short trip to the Guayquil airport where we were ushered through a perfunctory ... read more

So the time had finally come for me to leave Central America and fly over the Darian Gap to meet mum and Sara at Quito Airport. As ridiculous as it sounds I was a little it nervous about it, what if South America wouldn´t live up to my expectations? The only words of wisdom I had been given was "Always carry toilet paper and hand sanitiser, the toilets are disgusting". Not exactly confidence inspiring and after mum and Sara left I still had another 2 months to travel around the area. After months of experiencing the chaos of Central American bus transportation, it did feel a bit like cheating flying, it was so easy! Despite rumours of constant airline delays, terrible planes etc. Not only was the plane pretty good (luckily), it landed early and in ... read more

Our travels to the Galapagos begin in Quito. This is the second highest capital city in the world, nearly as high as La Paz, though strangely, it does not have the same feeling of altitude. Perhaps your correspondent has become accustomed to such rarefied airs, or the beer is stronger here. We arrived in the city (a Jam tribute to those who know) after a 12 hour bus journey through a baking hot day with a sense of trepidation. Tales of muggings and robbings abound amongst travellers concerning Quito. To my eyes, it seems safe in daylight, but after dark, a taxi should always be taken – even for the shortest journey. With this advice in mind , and especially after our scare at the border, we walked to and from hotel to restaurants and bars ... read more

The first thing that struck me about Quito is the gorgeous view - high up in the Andes, it is surrounded by moutains, some still capped with snow. Shortly after I realised how modern it feels in comparison to parts of Central America I have been in. Roads are good, everything is spread out quite nicely, the standard of housing seems to be quite high, cars are all really nice, and no chicken buses to speak of! It's a funny city - big and sprawling, it has 2 distinct parts - thecolonial Old Town, where all the beautiful colourful buildings and churches are, and the New Town, which includes the 'Mariscal' which has many restaurants and hotels, and is also sometimes referred to as Gringoland. The Mariscal is also supposed to be dangerous after dark, so ... read more

North Seymour and Bartelomew Saturday 10 September Another cram-packed day of activities starting with an overnight cruise between islands. This time we saw the Frigate birds in full swing with their extra ball bag inflated and bright red to attract their female mates to their nest (bed) for rumpy pumpy! Spectacular these birds are, with chests puffed out half the size of themselves, and these are big birds. The offspring are a white fluffy bundle of joy with a beak a bit like a cartoon sketch of Margaret Thatcher. The males build there nest in the top of a small bush, a bush shared with several other males and nests while the females circle over head checking out the size and colour of their suitors appendage. The Land Iguana showed himself just once but bold enough ... read more

I woke up this morning with a very sore throat and I realized that I had brought a whole bunch of medicine for serious illnesses, but none for a simple cold. But some hot tea and some Halls cough drops later and I was feeling better. We had another 2 hour boat ride this morning to reach Santa Cruz. It is not a big island, but has the largest population of 20,000. When we arrived we took a bus to the highlands to visit a sugar plantation. They treated us very well and we got to see how they got the juice out of the sugar cane and then how they either boiled it down to sugar or let it ferment into the sugar cane alcohol. We tried some straight sugar cane, very sweet but good, ... read more
