Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Sometimes u are asking me why I don't publish more pictures about myself...well...your wish is my command! So I arrived to Bogota with my mother and sister, but they spent only two days there...then they left me here all alone...alone in this huge city of 7 million people. Poor, poor me! Hahahaha...just kidding! Of course not! When they left I called my friend Giseth who lives here. I know Giseth from 4years ago when I was here [View Full Entry]

And now, for Colombia. I flew into Bogota on a Monday afternoon. I spent the afternoon looking at the old main square and visiting some museums. Colombia´s most famous artist is a man named Botero. There is an excellent little Museo Botero near the town square that not only features his work but has a great collection of Impressionist as well as Surrealist artists considering the size of the museum. The following day, and my first morning in Bogota, I met new friends Sue and Kim at the Platypus hostal. Up until then, I had really had a hard time deciding [View Full Entry]

Popayan to Pasto took about 6 hours, we have to haggle for the best price bus company everyone is competing for our fare at the bus terminal in Popayan, we settled to the lowest price and we got a proper bus not a van. The bus was good for a good 2 hours, it actually have a strong a/c then it broke and the heater went on and somehow they cant turn it off so the roof has to be opened to let in fresh air. I was so tired and slept through most of the way. Took a taxi soon [View Full Entry]

Went to a volcano yesterday that spews forth mud that is supposedly the best thing you can treat your skin to. It was amazingly nice getting pampered by the locals, getting massages etc. After the mud bath they even washed us in the river (and forced us to take off our swim suits!!!) I am too lazy to describe it, but take a look at the pictures, tons of fun! [View Full Entry]

Nice look, huh ;o)

By 7am we are in town to wait for a collectivo to take us to Pitalito. A taxi was waiting as well we figured it will be faster if we got on it but it did not want to leave until one more person comes, we got tired of waiting we asked him to leave but would not budge so when the collectivo started moving we hopped off the taxi and got on the collectivo leaving the driver without a fare at all, his loss. Took roughly 45 minutes to get to Pitalito, a bigger town and a nicer bus station. [View Full Entry]

Wow! What can I say?!?! I was thinking that I would wait until I get a more "organized" life until I write about how my life here is... Haha, smart thinking, Annica - of course there is never going to be a routine in a country like this! What is it like here, though? I usually wake up before 6am (by now I think sleeping until 6h30 is to sleep in...), to escape some of the heat (already then it is 30-35 degrees C and around 75% humidity, although lately it has been a little bit cooler, wonder if it is [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Medellin a few days ago after taking the 14 hour bus ride from Cartagena. The city is nice but, due to the time of year, it pretty much rains every afternoon and evening. We haven't really let the weather limit us but the majority of our pictures look gloomy. We have been staying at the Black Sheep hostel which has been great - it is an older crowd, very clean and friendly English-speaking staff. We take the metro everywhere which is super cheap and allows us to get around the city quickly. We've managed to see quite a [View Full Entry]

What a week! It was an emotionally one that I will ALWAYS remember for the rest of my life. On Tuesday we had our final exam for level 5, I didn’t do so well but I passed however I’m still proud of myself because I didn’t study at all. On Wednesday Juliana, Lexie and myself visited the mosque in Medellin - ok I wasn’t a mosque, it’s a house that is used as a mosque - no one was around so we couldn't get in but I’m still glad we went. Juliana drove us, she is a good driver, and then [View Full Entry]

Left Popayan early, Johnny the French dude is the last addition to our group of now 5. At the bus station we got swarmed by bus conductors wanting our fare, they were pushing and shoving each other, we went to the bus company that gave us the cheapest fare(16,000 pesos). We had a quick breakfast then hopped on to the collectivo van. Scenic windy road trip to rough gravel roads all of us but Johnny were at the back of the van and we felt every dibs on that freakin road. 3 1/2 hours later we got to the junction where [View Full Entry]

After another incredibly mediocre breakfast (translation : we taste some of it) we spend the morning walking around the town. Our goals, once more, are to call our daughter in Israel, and mail a postcard. You would think these to be realistic goals, and youd be wrong. We fail hopelessly on both fronts agreeing it must surely be easier in Cartagena, our next destination. Its a beautiful day and the water looks magnificent, but we can swim. Yesterday, while at Johnny Cay, Benjy, our son, suddenly started chafing and hurting from the sea water. It happened a year earlier in Honduras [View Full Entry]
