Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

On the 15th we left Caracas for Santa Marta, Colombia. Of course the bus left an hour late, took about 10 hours longer than the ticket lady had told us it would and broke down for a good hour when we were nearly there. But this should have been expected given that the transport fairy hates me. All in all it took about 24 hours and was pretty straight forward. On the approach to the Colombian boarder the bus was stopped about 5 times by armed police who came on board to check our documents and search the Venezuelan men. Italo, [View Full Entry]

After a big night Chris and I slept in for a bit trying to get to coffee country today will be a tall task, we checked out and took the bus to Armenia, we wer surprised to find out it will take 6 hours to get there, Luis my friend said only 4 hours, liar! it was a small bus and our seat is next to the toilet and it stunk. The roads are windy and the kids in the bus are throwing up. Occasional wafts of smelly toilet and a/c that barely worked was too much for a 6 hour [View Full Entry]

We arrive in Bogota on July 4th. It's one of those very early morning departures which always seem like a good idea at the time of booking the flights but miserable at the time of flying. And we've been to the airport at 4am the morning before, so we're doubly miserable. However stepping outside at Bogota is a breath of fresh air (we're expecting double negative air : the combination of the altitude and pollution, but we can't feel either). Customs and passport control is a breeze, and someone from our hotel is waiting for us. Usually we get our own [View Full Entry]

I just realised I missed my stop, i have no money, no phone and I´m dreading to go to Barranquilla by night in those conditions. I don't know exactly how far Barranquilla is but in a way I'm looking forward to get there. I'm crossing my fingers, hoping that Barranquilla's terminal bus has a cash point. But I doubt it... I don't really want to go to the city center with my massive backpack in back. It s like a big sign saying "gringo", "turista", victima"... Suddenly I'm distracted from my negative thoughts by a group of street vendors getting [View Full Entry]

Chévere is another slang word for cool in Colombia. So I didn’t blog last week, I was so busy trying to finish up my Statement of Purpose & other supplementary essays for Graduate school - Guess what, I finished all the 14 essays on Wednesday. This week has been a productive one. We are learning how to express emotions, opinions, suggest this, recommend things and health issues in my Spanish class. There was a Health Fair on campus this week, we went as a class, I did an eye exam, paps smear and breast cancer exam -all for free, is that [View Full Entry]

Hola! Well I have had a crazy week in Southern Colombia. On my way to Salento (a cute colonial style town famous for coffee, cowboys and trout) I sat beside a beautiful young Colombian girl who did not speak English, but when she found out that I was travelling by myself she decided to take me to meet her friends, two of who could speak perfect English. I spent the afternoon walking around the town which was packed with Sunday Colombian tourists and I had a new fruit juice - Guanabana, absolutely delicious with milk. The next day I did a [View Full Entry]

I've got the impression I got ripped off but there is isn't a single cash point in the bus station, so once again I get a great bargain (yeah right), I´m getting good at this... Then, surprise! All the bus companies are asking 20000COP for the bus journey to Santa Marta. I'm 3000 short ( thanks Venezuela and your unexpected tax to leave the country by [View Full Entry]

San Gil is probably not the best town to decide to ditch the taxi and walk, heavy with packs, from the bus station to find accomodation. San Gil is built on one of the steepest hills known to mankind, and what the guidbook maps don tell you is that the bus stops at the bottom of the hill and the hostel we were after was at the top of it. Having recently experienced bouts of homesickness we decided it was worth the uphill effort to this Australian run hostel, if only for our mental wellbeing. A couple of guys standing outside [View Full Entry]

We have arrived in Bogota safely and due to the Colombian Customs being pretty efficient and very pleasant and helpful we came through the airport and then went straight to the Aduane Offices. By 5.30pm we had cleared the bikes (After a fire drill and them supplying us with complementary espressos) and were on out way to the hotel on the bikes! Brilliant! If you are following the itinerary we left then you will see that because no-one had come through here before as a group we were scheduled to be stuck here for a few days.
