Colombia Travel Blogs

Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Taganga South America » Colombia » Santa Marta » Taganga
So after a long and gruelling journey over the border from Venezuela which included paying numurous officials off and queing for long periods in the raging heat we finally arrived in Taganga. Taganga is a little fishing village around 5 Km outside the town of Santa Marta. It is very popular for diving and just chilling out on the Carribean. We were particularly excited as it was our first trip to the carribean on our travels. On arrival at Taganga we sought out somewhere to stay. We went with a palce called Casa Blanca which is literally on the waters edge. [View Full Entry]

Gus and Jaida were comfortable. They had finally arrived at Colombias Northern beaches in reasonably quick fashion and had spent four days or so in a lovely beach town named Santa Marta. It was what they wanted, maybe even needed; after all, everyone knows that the hectic life of a backpacker sometimes needs to go back to experiencing some all-important creature comforts. And that´s how they were living; room with air-conditioning and big television; swimming in the placid ocean bay twice a day; every night choosing dinner from an array of restaurants which lined the beach. Gus was getting [View Full Entry]

Hola my friends! This is a bit shorter blog which I saved 2months ago, but I think it is still worth publishing it. Travelling with Eduardo aka "el mexicano" is like travelling with a local guy. I think he is an amazing person and I consider myself very happy to be his friend. After meeting him in Nicaragua I really thought that we will see again somewhere in Argentina, but after funny circumstances we were in Panama city at the same time. Then he flew to Cartagena a couple of days after me and suggested that it's finally time for me [View Full Entry]

Finally we arrive in South America. Cartagena is the most beautiful and romantic city in Colombia and possibly South America. As we sailed in on the calm water just after sunrise, the first thing we saw was the old wall which was built around the old city to keep pirates out. The city had been sacked and burned down a few times by Captain Morgan as it was the port town where treasure hunters left back to Europe. As we approached we saw several ships which looked like tanks zooming around with giant machine guns at the front. A bit intimidating [View Full Entry]

And now, for Colombia. I flew into Bogota on a Monday afternoon. I spent the afternoon looking at the old main square and visiting some museums. Colombia´s most famous artist is a man named Botero. There is an excellent little Museo Botero near the town square that not only features his work but has a great collection of Impressionist as well as Surrealist artists considering the size of the museum. The following day, and my first morning in Bogota, I met new friends Sue and Kim at the Platypus hostal. Up until then, I had really had a hard time deciding [View Full Entry]

Popayan to Pasto took about 6 hours, we have to haggle for the best price bus company everyone is competing for our fare at the bus terminal in Popayan, we settled to the lowest price and we got a proper bus not a van. The bus was good for a good 2 hours, it actually have a strong a/c then it broke and the heater went on and somehow they cant turn it off so the roof has to be opened to let in fresh air. I was so tired and slept through most of the way. Took a taxi soon [View Full Entry]
