Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

On Friday I went straight from the beach to a field trip in Barranquilla, a city about 45 min from here with car, and two hours from here with bus... And it does not depend on the roads all of the time, they are fine, but it depends on either the limitation (at 60, I can't figure out why!!!) or that the engines in the buses are just so weak that we can't advance any faster!!! Hahaha. And I don't understand what is up with Colombian people and buses, but they always open the windows and since there seems to be [View Full Entry]

Colombian Bus...

Went for three days to a bay close to Barranquilla to wait for the perfect winds for kite surfing - and they came!!! Perfect spot - sleeping in a hammack, kite surfing when winds allow, swimming when not, no stress and just relax. Seriously, I don't know if I ever want to leave from here... (but the farmer's tan is still a fact...) By the way, see the boat in the picture, guess who managed to get the kite tangled up on the masts???!!! :o) [View Full Entry]

'Nuff said - simply being able to come and ride through this fantastic country is a major result, as up until recently, there's no way that Foreign Office advice would have allowed an overland bike trip like this to take place (insurance etc). Here's the story since Panama... Crossing the Darien Gap This is one hundred miles of swamp and jungle that separates Panama from Colombia. For economic/geographical/logistical/political reasons (choose one or more of the above), no-one has yet built a road through it, so we had to park ourselves (and our bikes) into planes for the one hou [View Full Entry]

A chat with the locals
Parque de Esculturas, Medellin

After a few days rest in Bogotá we spend our last evening at Autogermana for a press and customer event for Kevin and Julia to promote Globebusters to the Colombians. This involved me being asked to speak to the group with an intro and closer in Spanish. Although Max also spoke and did the whole of his in Spanish! Clever dick! The ride to Medellin the next day was spectacular. The scenery was the most consistently beautiful of rolling hills and green mountains, The roads were equally entertaining and following Mauricio and Kevin for 30+ miles of bend bend bend bend [View Full Entry]

SALSA TIME! South America » Colombia » Cali
At the bus station in Armenia the buses are the same prices as the expresso collectivos, for 20,000 pesos you get to Cali straight, no stops. 3 hours later i found myself at the bus station, I went inside to look for an ATM machine then found the info desk, I asked the lady how much taxi costs for Pelican Larry, the hostel I will stay. Nice place with comfy beds. My roomies are Veronica from Oz and Lafonsa from Alabama. I was on FB when Sasha my German friend happened to be online as well, we found out we were [View Full Entry]

We asked for adventure, and we got it, within the first hour for that matter! So Zack and I said our good byes, checked in and were ready for our long flight. When we heard ´Folkerts party for 2´ on the intercom. So we go to check out what the problem is, thinking we probably forgot something , but it was that we didnt have a return flight from South America. The airline told us that if the Colombians turned us back because we didn´t have an onward ticket they would be fined 10,000. So we decided to try to get [View Full Entry]

Well, I proved myself right once again on this trip. I knew my typical trip equation would work and it did to the nth degree. Travel Fast + No Real Plan + Foreign Country + 6 Gringos = A wild adventure with tons of things going wrong, but so right. I knew I was off to a good one as I waited at the airport for my ride to come. 6:00, 7:00, 8:00. I was so shocked there was no one to pick me up at one time I questioned that I was even in the right city. Then finally a [View Full Entry]

Today we're off to Zipaquira, home of the famous salt cathedral. We're generally not that excited by religious monuments, but this one is apparently a must do. The bus station is not surprisingly very busy and big, but there are enough official looking personnel to direct us to the right area. We're immediately whisked onto a bus and then sit for a while as more passengers get on. We leave on what is apparently a ninety minute journey. For the longest time we crawl through Bogota traffic, seemingly stopping to load on more passengers every block. Unless the town of Zipaquira [View Full Entry]

On the 15th we left Caracas for Santa Marta, Colombia. Of course the bus left an hour late, took about 10 hours longer than the ticket lady had told us it would and broke down for a good hour when we were nearly there. But this should have been expected given that the transport fairy hates me. All in all it took about 24 hours and was pretty straight forward. On the approach to the Colombian boarder the bus was stopped about 5 times by armed police who came on board to check our documents and search the Venezuelan men. Italo, [View Full Entry]
