Okay, so in the last blog I was listing what we did in the great city of Medellin. Can't remember what number I was on, so I'll start fresh with numero uno... 1. Went to the Jardin Botanico, which is very large and FREE and has a butterfly garden, an orchid garden, and other cool things to see. Because it's free, it also seems to be a hangout for local teenagers who want to come make out with their boyfriends and girlfriends. 2. Ryan spent a day at a water park, which was pretty cheap at $3 entry fee. And I spent a day browsing boutiques and getting waxed (girly things) in the Poblado neighborhood near our hostel. 3. Took the Metrocable to the outskirts of the city. This is a really cool feature of the ... read more

Now that we have explored many places in Colombia and have moved south to Ecuador, we can easily agree that Medellin was the best overall city in Colombia. I'm now so far behind in writing the blogs that I'm going to try to be brief about Medellin, even though we spent nearly a week there. So, a quick list of all the things we loved about the city... 1. The Metro- Medellin is the only city in Colombia with a metro (subway) system. It's great, it's clean, it's fast, it's effective, it's cheap, and it's going to take the city 60 years to pay off. 2. Cleanliness- Not all cities in Colombia are clean, but Medellin is. One of the factors that makes it appear drastically cleaner is the absence of street dogs. We didn't see ... read more

I still have two more cities to catch up on in the blog, but I have to write really quickly about our day today because I fell in love with Colombia today and I'm still on a high from it. First of all, we have been in Medellin for nearly a week now and it is, hands down, the best big city we've been to yet. It's great for so many reasons, but I will go into that more when I blog about Medellin. Right now I need to write about the area that surrounds Medellin, for Medellin is in the department (which is their name for a state, province, etc.) of Antioquia. And Antioquia is definitely the most breathtakingly beautiful department of Colombia. The plants are the greenest green you'll ever see, the flowers are ... read more

I arrived in Medellin on a 13 hour overnight bus and checked into the Black Sheep hostel, after a few missed attempts at finding it on behalf of the taxi driver. The owner, Kelvin, is extremely helpful and very chilled out, a trait I have become accustomed with kiwis! He gave me a map of the area and pointed me in the direction of the local attractions…too easy…so all that was left to do was freshen up and head to the bakery for breakfast and a coffee. I met Stephanie almost immediately as she was still in bed in the dorm. She is half Swiss and half Peruvian and has been living in Lima for the last 2 years. She had arrived the night before with her friend Janine, also from Switzerland and I told her ... read more

Hi all, Medellin is the second largest city of Colombia with about 4 million inhabitants, and it is a very modern and well organized city, as we learned later, much more than the Capital - Bogota. It is also known as “The city of eternal spring” - and indeed, we had a fine weather during our staying, dry climate, no sweating and refreshing rains in the afternoons - a big comfort after the last couple of months with tropical climate, that is, heat and unbearable humidity. Upon arrival we have learned there is a good metro system - this is not a subway, it is more 'upway' (as Nitzan called it) a metro that is all above ground level, actually above many of the buildings in the city (like in Chicago??) - and so directly from ... read more

Oh my, it's been a long time since I've blogged. And it's not like I've been on the road or especially busy. In fact, just the opposite. I've been very settled. After about 2.5 months back on the road, I thought it might be nice to settle down in Medellin for a while and take an intermediate Spanish class. There is a university here in Medellin called EAFIT, which recently received the highest certification such a Spanish program can receive on the global scene. It ended up being fairly pricey but when I figured out the hourly cost compared to what I would pay for a course in SF, it ended up being far cheaper to do it here. I had gotten to a point in my Spanish where I felt I would benefit from having ... read more

Wednesday morning I was awake at about 6am. I was already basically packed (give or take a few bits like the phone and computer which always get thrown in at the last moment). I had breakfast, got some photos of the hostel, updated the blog and ran to the shop to grab a bottle of water and some cash before the cab arrived. Of the cities that I've been to in Colombia, Medellín is certainly the best. It has a lot to offer the tourist in terms of things to do. It's Metro system is just phenomenal and makes getting around really easy. The night life (when Ley Seca isn't in force) is great. The only complaint that I would have is that there's too much traffic - pretty much everywhere that you go there are ... read more

Today I'll be moving on from Medellín and heading south to what will (probably) be my final destination here in Colombia - a small town called Popayán. But I owe you a few days worth of update, so here goes. Sunday I awoke as sore as I expected. The sunburn was as painful as I've ever experienced - every move was accompanied by searing pain. Wasn't pleasant. I applied a cold towel and, later, some cream which soothed it a bit. Not for the first time, I cursed my own stupidity. Having showered (a cold shower - by choice) and applied a liberal dose of sunblock on my face and shoulders I got dressed (gingerly), opting for my full length white linen shirt and headed (equally gingerly) towards Universidad. The plan was to go to Parque ... read more
