"When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all of your thoughts break their bonds; your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be." -Patanjali

It's been a while since I've shared anything on my travel blog and I've been wanting to do some more writing so, you lucky people, I'm posting about my recent escape to Maui, Hawaii. I am the fortunate relative of someone who owns a timeshare in the Kahana area of Maui and was able to finagle a last minute (relatively) inexpensive flight and a free place to stay (thanks Dad!). Unlike previous trips, this time around I rented a car and brought a travel buddy so I ventured further than I previously had with the fam. Below is a quick day-by-day for anyone interested in making travel plans. Day 1 - Lounging, acclimating and luau-ing. My brother's family recently purchased a timeshare in the same resort I was staying at with my dad and step-mom, and ... read more

I can go home now. I had such a great time at Laguna Yal-Ku in Akumal that I’m totally fulfilled. When I walked from the parking area through the meticulously manicured path and arrived at the entrance of the laguna proper, my mind was blown. It took a good long while to wrap my head around how beautiful the location is. The above-water world is only partially what makes this place one of my favorite in the world. The snorkelling was fantastic. And there isn’t even any brillantly colored coral. The lagoon floor is white and peppered with white rock formations below, mangroves above. As I swam, I would see light piercing through an opening in the rocks and in due time I was able to follow an opening to the other side. It was very ... read more

I didn’t see the signs. Literally, there were massive signs pointing the way and I missed all of them. I was looking for something more modest, more homemade, not two-story tall signs and bright orange arches welcoming me to the ruta de cenotes. So I missed the first turn off, and then the second. I knew at some point I was bound to turn right at a T (which is what the french man running Casitas Kinsol in Puerto Morelos told me. Of course, he also gave me directions to a restaurant around the corner I never found). So I’m driving along the turn-off and now I’m looking for a dirt road. Great, found one! Except this is more like two parallel ditches pretending to be a road. It keeps getting worse so I pull over ... read more

Dorothy wasn't the only gal to rediscover the pleasures of being home. Despite my travels far and wide, I continue to enjoy the treasures right in my backyard. Invited by my special friend, Stephanie, who happens to own a Land Rover, we drove down to Carmel-by-the-Sea one recent Saturday morning for an off-road adventure. On the grounds of Quail Lodge, a former resort and current golf course, one will also find the Land Rover Experience driving school. The lodge sits on 850 acres - far more area than we could cover in our one-day adventure, which included some hair-raising off-roading, a slalom course and blindfolded driving (don't worry, one person gave instructions - the one without the blindfold, while the other slowly crawled through sets of cones scattered around a clearing). My highlights included the parts ... read more

I kinda hate the word “funemployment”. But really, what else do you call scavenging Pick’n’Pulls on a beautiful, cloudless Wednesday in summer* when everyone else is hard at work? Pick’n’Pull is a junkyard - a well-organized junkyard sorted by general types of cars where you can walk out of there with any car part you can find and remove. My mission on this day was to find a new grill for my 1983 Mercedes Benz 300SD. As some of you already know, I bought this car shortly before I took off for a 9-week vacation. I clearly didn’t know at the time my vacation would last one year! Regardless, a matter of days before the old owner turned over Old Beulah (that’s what I call my Benz), someone backed into her, denting the front grill. Old ... read more

The World Cup officially ended July 11th, however the last match in Cape Town was on July 6th, which was also the last day I had volunteer duties. I hadn’t booked my return flight back to the US until August 3rd, giving me a few weeks to travel around southern Africa. I expected to hear about interesting places to go while I was based in Cape Town. Ironically, the most intriguing destinations to me were outside of South Africa. Namibia, a mere 6 hours away from Cape Town, was the closest option. On the other hand, Mozambique, on the far opposite side of South Africa, is known for its majestic, isolated beaches. I decided to aim big. Why not take a mega-road trip through Namibia, to the other intriguing destination of Botswana, quickly passing through Victoria ... read more

If you’ve spent any amount of time in Cape Town, and aren’t terrified of venturing out to a black township, there is an excellent chance you’ve been out to Mzoli’s in Gugulethu, about 20 minutes outside of Town. Mzoli’s Butchery, or Mzoli’s Meats, is exactly as the title states. An outing to Mzoli’s goes something like this. First, you queue up to buy your meat, usually a combination of beef, mutton, pork, sausage and/or chicken. Second, you patiently wait as they braai, or BBQ, as we Americans call it, your meat with an extremely tasty seasoning. Third, dig in! No utensils required (or provided!). And if you happen to make your way to Mzoli’s on a Sunday, which you really must, you will be enjoying your meal to the upbeat rhythm of dance music. And a ... read more

Many of you have been asking and wondering how my World Cup experience has been. To answer this question, it is vital that I break down “experience” into two parts: First, my experience of being in South Africa during the World Cup; and second, my experience of being a volunteer in South Africa during the World Cup. Let me start with the volunteer experience. If I spoke with you before I left for SA, (in this case, South Africa), then it won’t surprise you that the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organizing Committee (aka the South Africans running the show) are amongst the most disorganized of any organization I’ve worked with. Unfortunately, dealing with the most important items, i.e., meals and money, has been the most frustrating. Processes change all the time, communication is terrible. On ... read more

Preface: The problem with writing these blogs over a couple of days is that I realize I leave things out. So I want to preface this by saying that the volunteers (amongst others) I've met from South Africa have been so kind and lovely and they are truly interested in making sure I am well taken care of, safe and get to experience the best that Cape Town has to offer. Now please proceed. First up, the heavy stuff. And then I promise some lighter, self-ridiculing. Let's start with Nelson Mandela. Madiba. I read about him and Winnie when I was in elementary school. He was a fighter. And a survivor. He was the first president to be elected in a fully representative South African democracy. But being here, I’m starting to understand what being a ... read more

As I write this, I’m sitting in San Francisco International airport (SFO) waiting to board my delayed flight to New York. From New York, I fly to Johannesburg. From Joburg to Cape Town. It’s a 30-hour or so travel itinerary. I figure once you get up around or past 30 hours, it doesn’t really matter how long you’re on the road, the trip is long. (In retrospect, I am going to say after 15 hours, it doesn’t really matter). Today is June 1st. Well, it’s almost June 2nd, and will be by the time the plane hits the tarmac. I returned to the US on May 12th. It’s been rough, I won’t lie. The first week I was in a serious funk. Then I started becoming bitter. Bitter at the lifestyles my friends and family have ... read more
