Hola from Colombia! Its been a while between updates and its all been happening so here it goes..... After wrapping up our joint adventure in South America with a few days in Quito, Tim and I made the big journey to Ye Olde England to catch up with a whole bunch of family and friends, as well as enjoy a bit of civilisation. Its the small things that are exciting, like visiting a supermarket that has absolutely everything you could ever want in it, putting your toilet paper in the toilet rather than in the bin next to the toilet, and using public transport that does not have trashy latino hip hop playing at full blast. I won't go into too many details of the trip, but I would like to say a huge thank you ... read more

The Carribean sea..blue warm and beautiful...we stayed for one night in an ancient tent, on a beautiful beach. It started to rain about midnight but not enough to drown us. Gavin scampered up a very tall coconut palm and stole a couple for tea when no one was about : it was very hot there and we both got rather burnt badly, but swimming in the warm turquoise water was joyous. After a slow boat back to Cartagena, (a good sleep, fan brrring wildly, and 10 cold showers) the next day we took a mini bus to a 25 meter high mud volcano , climbed the rickety stairs and decended into the warm, thick creamy mud. ooo bliss . You cant really move much , you just hang suspended at about shoulder level and cover yourself ... read more

Greetings! Thank you so much to those of you who have written messages in response to my last entry, they were very funny, and it was great to hear from some of you! Keeping with the style of the first entry, there is a story to go along with each word/phrase in the title of this entry. Thus, we commence. El Embrujo means something along the lines of The Enchantment in English and was the name of a property that my friend and I visited. This story will be quite long, but I think is absolutely wonderful, I hope you enjoy. El Embrujo belongs to a friend of the family I am staying with, Jose, and he is a man probably in his 70s, who lives there with his wife and the live-in staff that help ... read more

After a washout in Miami, I left the States Thursday morning and arrived in Bogota at around 10AM. Since my flight to Quito wasn´t scheduled to leave until 4:30, after some research and some courage-building, I hailed a taxi outside the airport, which was arguably the most dangerous part of the excursion. Eduardo was happy to help me despite my minimal Spanish, and I asked him to drop me off in la Candelaria, the main historical/cultural district in town. Before stepping out of the cab, I was already happy that I had made the trip. The city is beautifully situated, and the edges reach into the steep mountains surrounding it. There is a significant skyline, which I didn´t expect, and the roads were wide and well-organized. Once we dodged our way through the typical chaos in ... read more

To stay an extra day in Bogata was a last minute add-on. I usually have no interest in capital cities, but, I'm glad we did check it out. We spent our day visiting various museums, including their well stocked gold museum and strolling through La Candelaria, a section of the city with cobbled streets, shops, crafts, and galleries. We ended the day with a cable car trip to the top of Cerro de Montserrat (10,000 ft). At the top is a church and spectacular views of the city. There are also local vendors, one of which made one of my favorite drinks - Canelazo - a hot, alcoholic cinnamon and cloves. I discovered this drink in Ecuador and it was a treat to find it here! We were going to check out the salsa scene, but, ... read more

When we first came to South America back in September of last year Colombia was not even on our list of countries to visit. Why would anyone visit a place known for terrorist guerrillas, kidnappings and drug trafficking? But, the more people we met during our travels the more we heard that Colombia is seriously mis-represented by the rest of the world and that it is actually a country worth getting to know. So, it got added to the list... From Ecuador to Colombia The first decision we had to make was whether to fly into Colombia or to cross by land. There have been a number of tense moments between Ecuador and Colombia recently so we were feeling wary. However, we spoke to other people who had crossed by land and had not faced difficulties, ... read more

Thursday 12th of June. In the central atrium of the Bogotá country club a luxury pool snakes it´s way under bridges, in and out of the geodesic dome. A young english wife sits anxiously in a deck chair, awaiting the return of her high flying husband, the inscrutable Mr Bean (not that one). Inside the conference facility, Señor Bean is engaged in a lengthy and somewhat heated discussion, pertaining to a large shipment. His business needs this deal, so much is obvious from the sums involved... and yet he appears dispassionate and stoic in his ill fitting suit. He barely nods as the vast sums of capital are discussed, and the clauses of the deal are ironed out with his Colombian counterpart, Andrés Ferreira. Only when a mini skirt clad secretary enters to peel a squashed ... read more

It's been a long time coming, but finally...photos will be on their way...... one day! Ah, another bus journey...you know when you've had enough as your socks get stuck to the cuts and open wounds of your feet, it's freezing cold, I'm curled in a very small ball, could probably fit into a womb, my I-pod has run out, feel very empty, gritty eyed and sapped of any energy. Perfect timing to be deposited at a random bus station at 3am in Cali. With no money, we luckily shared a taxi with 2 sweet girls from Denmark, who also had a reservation at a hostel. Unfortunately said reservation no longer existed as we bellowed out from the street to wake the hostel up. Not a good start. Had to drive around until we eventually found one ... read more
