"Brasil, Brasil" - its carnaval time and those patriotic Brazilians were in full on party mode when we arrived in Rio in a huge storm. Well most of them were, we stopped at the Riotur desk in the airport for tourist information and the Carioca on duty got out a map, circled the Sugar Loaf, the Corcavado (Christ statue) and said - "well there isnt really much to do here except for the beaches" - hold on a minute, isnt the world´s biggest party due to start in just a couple of days.....? Well that´s Brazil for you - full of contradictions and myths. We were spending a couple of days in Rio where Julie and Dave would join us from the UK and then on to Salvador for the biggest street Carnaval in the world ... read more

Left BA and headed north through the Pampas of Argentina (where all the cows live!). Couple of long truck days got us to the border with Paraguay at Encarnacion. Once into Paraguay we stopped at Trinidad to visit some Jesuit ruins, which included lots of beheaded statues because inhabitants of the site after the Jesuits left thought the statues contained treasures. Then to campsite nearby, the best one yet, with a lovely pool, plus slide and diving board!! Spent the whole morning at the pool the next day, not leaving the site till lunchtime. Got to Ascunsion late afternoon, but like a ghost town, the quietest capital city I´ve ever seen! I suppose it was Sunday, but still.... Attempted a bit of shopping the next day, very traumatic for us girls trying to buy new bikinis, ... read more

Hello all! Well, after a short stay in Argentina we had quite a few long drives across the country and arrived in Puerto iggassu which was the region to see the iggassu falls from the argentinian side. We were told this was the best side to view the falls and i have to say it was a great day. The views were fantastic and the falls staggering. Got rather wet as you get really close to the falls and took a little jet boat ride under them which was fab! Got some good piccies too i think! At the end of the day we had a very short ride on cindy the truck to take us across the border into Brazil where we stayed in a place called foz de iggassu. We stayed in a lovely ... read more

In Rio now after a long but surprisingly awesome bus ride. Although I could not understand the movies, they were constantly playing, and the company provided a few treats and water for the ride along with a blanket and head phones. Aside from the baby that decided to scream at 4am (I have no way to confirm because I don´t have a watch), it went by really quickly. The apartment that we have in Rio is on the 8th floor with three bedrooms and three bathrooms conveniently. The shower is the best shower that I have had on the trip so far with great water pressure and hot water. Yeah, I know it´s 30 degrees all the time and there is no reason to have a hot shower, but damn do they feel good. For the ... read more

Now I am in the state of Pernambuco. Recife and Olinda are two beautiful cities (Olinda more than Recife) on the coastline where I spent four days. I stayed in Recife, Boa Viagem, next to the beach and in the mornings I was able to go running along the beach promenade. Sweet. I met some really nice people in the hostel that I could explore pre-carnaval with. Olinda is a colonial, very bohemian town built on a hill, next to tthe beach, with tons of winding small streets and lots of beutiful houses and churches. For those of you who know how much I loved the historic center of Montpellier - this was a little bit the same and very beautiful. I also got a chance to go to some pre-carnaval celebrating - crazy and fun. ... read more

I took a boat to Morro de Sao Paulo - An island which is located in a 2 hours distance from Salvador. From the boat Salvador looked like a really beautiful city (not at all like San Antonio), and it felt to me as if I was leaving all my troubles behind in Salvador. When I arrived, I realized that every image I had about tropical islands, was true in Morro - Magnificent beaches, a little bit of jungle, palm and coconut trees on the beach, beautiful women. Here for the first time I truly understood the meaning of the Spanish word 'tranquello' (there is no good translation, but you can try relax / calm / no problems). I met here allot of interesting people - From Switzerland, Germany, France, Argentina, Spain and even tourists from ... read more

The Salvador Carnival turned out to be a bigger experience than I expected, a huge party, streets buzzing, dancing, millions of people partying, at times you just couldn't move, everyone was involved and Salvador also lived up to its reputation as a pretty dangerous place. This entry is a long one, but lots of stories to tell......... Carnival is a big event all over Brasil every city, town and village has a parade of some sort, everyone gets involved. The Carnival runs in the days leading upto Lent.....we have Pancake Day they party for a week.......says alot about Brasil and the Brasilian way of life. The two big carnivals are Rio and Salvador. Rio is all about Samba Schools parading the most outrageous colourful processions in the city's Samba Dome. Salvador on the other hand is ... read more

O Rio e DEMAAAAAAAAIS, LEGAO, MARAVILHOSO!!! Rio is FANTASTIC!!! Backtracking to Belo Horizonte: evenings spent chilling at Claudio´s funky sushi restaurant (and trying the different varieties of caipirinha - strawberry, mango, pineapple... YUM!), making great contacts (among whom - a lift to Rio!!), and a crazy dancing evening (all night... morning... etc) at a trans nightclub... which, incidently, resulted in my lift (Claudio) sleeping through our agreed meeting time to go check out the apparently fabulous mining town of Ouro Preto (Oh well, got to leave something for next time!)... I did go to the hairdresser though. My nails will have to wait for another day (year.. lifetime?!) as it was full... but it did give them something to talk about at the hairdresser that I´d NEVER in my life had them done!!! Everyone was very ... read more

It's not been all beaches over the last few weeks, we have done some culture too. Principally colonial remnants from when the Portuguese were in charge here. Salvador is Brazil's biggest party city after Rio and we spent a few days taking in the culture. It's a weird mix of European, African (big slave trade influence) and Brazillian. They were also warming up for Carnival so there were drums and dancing everywhere. It's also one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil so we practiced our big group walking, not taking out anything you can't afford to lose as we ran the gauntlet from our hotel to the area where the tourist police were on every corner. It was only 200 yards, but the stories were quite scary enough. But we survived and have honed our ... read more

Well, if I can start by trying to remember what day it actually is today I can count back to my last blog update and try to figure out what I did since then, but instead since I don't think I can actually do that, I'm just going to list all the highlights of Rio so far. Jacky came to visit me! As many of you know, she planned to come down here for Carnival and she did just that. It was quite the heartwarming reunion and we have had a lot of catching up to do. I actually arrived in Rio last week (I'm trying desperately to remember the day) and somehow through my excellent travel skills managed to find Ryan Mukuda. For all those of you who don't know, Ryan, Andre and the Poi ... read more
