When suffering a lack of energy after Europe, Rio is certainly one place to get a fresh dose! The place is for me a collision of Manila and Surfer's Paradise. An unhealthily large and economically imbalanced population, a pretty good beach, faded resort atmosphere, decaying suburbs, but with those famous beautiful granite peaks that make you pinch yourself as you bodysurf a wave to the Ipanema shoreline. Like most travellers, I had a fair bit of trepidation about venturing far from the gated and guarded hostal quarters, but managed the usual activities - of course the beach, the sugarloaf cablecar, a strangle mugging, a football match, food poisoning. Joking about the mugging. Though thinking of it did prevent me heading out too often with the camera, so sorry not many photos. Not sure as usual where ... read more

Am just back from a Catholic Festival in Minas Gerais, it´s about 70 mins from Joao Pinheiro. The weirdest festival I´ve ever been to. We went on Sat afternoon until Monday evening. It´s a mix of wasted non-believers and wasted belivers. Everyone drinking beer all day long and going to mass! At 5am mass starts and it´s blared out all over the village from loud-speakers! Weirdest thing about it is that there´s NO live music at all. It´s all crappy pop music at horrendous volumes from a million different cars (which subsequently caused lots of battery problems, ha ha). WRECK MY HEAD!! It was really good fun at the same time and once we´d got back to Joao Pinheiro Henrique was feeling that he was missing a lot. So... yesterday afternoon we went back again, just ... read more

Le soir nous rejoignons les quelques touristes pauliste pour grignoter des nombreux et varies Pastels et patisseries; les soirs sont toujours tres animes avec groupes de musiciens et attractions. Hi everybody, sorry it's been a long time since we've written. We are fine and still having a great time. Brazil is beautiful and the people are generous, friendly and open. We've had so many great experiences already, it's difficult to know where to start but here goes... In my last entry I said that we would soon be heading inland after our long ride down the costa verde but, as usual, our plans changed completely and it was actually quite a while before we finally said goodbye to the coast. Why ? Well, firstly we had intended to progress very quickly along the last stretch of beach as the riding was flat and easy on the sand, between the sunbathers and the sea. Also the scenery here, on the coast near to Sao Paulo, was ... read more

Now in Campo Grande after 5 excellent days in Rio. We arrived in Rio last Thursday after being run out of town in New York due to Lucys diplomacy. An interesting guided tour around the Lower East Side Tenement museum turned nasty when the camp dwarf who was guiding us innocently asked "When the men lost their jobs during the Great Depression, how do you think the wives helped the families get by?" There was silence amongst the group of the other 12 or so all-American tour group as they thought proudly about what their ancestors would have done in this situation - making clothes, perhaps just making the money spread further. The thoughtful silence was harshly broken by Lucy suggesting loudly "Prostitution!". Rio was great fun, we stayed at Ipanema and managed to hit the ... read more

We went to Rio de Janeiro early to try and bring our flight forward to due to short supplies of money but the particularly unhelpful woman at Iberia told us there were no seats until October to anywhere in Europe! So we had to stretch our money out two weeks more than we thought possible. To do this we visited Paraty and Ilha Grande in Rio state and although not particularly cheap were much cheaper than Rio itself!! It turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it was two of the most relaxing weeks (and one of the best days) of our trip. We arrived in Paraty with nowhere booked at 9pm but were surrounded by people offering lodgings. After a bit detective work at a nearby travel agent we walked to a ... read more

Dear Bob, I quit. Please accept my conditional resignation as an educator in this district. Upon reflection, and a three-day visit to Jericaocoara, I have decided that working for a living just isn’t for me. Getting to Jericoacoara is about as adventuresome as pronouncing the name of this idyllic location, the one-hour jolting trip in an open truck, plowing through sand and surf, will serious make you contemplate the following demands. If they are not met, I’m gone. Here are my stipulations: 1. You must make sandals the official footwear of the workplace. In Jeri, nothing is paved, so there is no point in wearing anything else. 2. Dune buggies must replace yellow school buses as the mode of transportation for all students, faculty, and staff. 3. Hallways must be of sand, about eight inches thick. ... read more

Have you ever tried to meet up with a friend when you are both travelling? It is not that easy. Thereby hangs a tale... I rather rushed through Brazil, a difficult thing to do when the country is so big. Which meant that I spent a long time on Brazilian buses. Brazil is a beautiful country, the people are friendly and love to party. I arrived in Porto Alegre, Brazil by overnight bus from Montevideo in Uruguay on the 26th of July. Porto Alegre is the capital city of the province of Rio Grande do Sol. It was a short stop in order to recover from the long bus ride, although I did visit a couple of museums in the city. The biggest adjustment for me was the language. Although my Spanish is still rubbish, my ... read more
