Florianopolis (8-11 Oct 2010)
Published: November 5th 2010South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » FlorianópolisFriday 8th October 2010 Arriving in Florianopolis city centre late morning with another long bus to Ilha Santa Caterina (following poor directions), we met a friendly local who pointed out the sites and helped us find our way. We were welcomed by the owner, Roberta, when we arrived at “Way2Go” hostel, she advised us to grab a local boat up the lake to Costa Lagoa for lunch, so we headed out but missed the hourly boat, then the heavens opened & wind picked up so we decided to lunch in the comfort of our warm, dry hostel instead. We were in Lagoa, a small lively town on Ilha Santa Caterina - we hit the town that night and stumbled across a real gem called the Big Bamboo, which, for obvious reasons looked like it belonged on ... read more

Published: September 25th 2010South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » FlorianópolisAfter arriving at the quaint colonial town of Paraty, we located our hostel along a cobbled street only to have our Brazilian, Portuguese speaking, hostess block the door and pull a scrap of paper out of her pocket that said OTHER HOSTEL. After a confusing conversation which included lots of pointing she finally took us to another hostel where the owner spoke as much english as we do Portuguese. We finally managed to get a room and strolled around the historical town for the afternoon. The town was hosting a food festival at the weekend so we explored the local bars and found some live Brazilian music. On day 2 we decided to join a boat trip to visit local islands which s really cool. What is better than being on a boat with cold beers, ... read more

Saudades de Floripa, ... read more
OK, this is long overdue, but given the insistence of some of you, here is an entry about Brazilian beaches. Most of the pictures (but not all) are taken in Praia dos Ingleses in Florianopolis, SC. It is a popular beach where families from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and even Paraguay come and enjoy their summer holiday. High season starts goes from Christmas to Carnival. During that period, about 20 to 25 thousand people are on the beach each day. The locals understood of course that so many people together present an unique opportunity to sell. So the beach becomes, among other things, a market. If you want to know what is sold, just have a look at our pictures. You will also see what else I did there when I was not taking pictures. Paraty and Florianopolis
Published: July 19th 2010South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » FlorianópolisParaty was, more or less, a perfect tourist town. Quiet small, with a pedestrianised and cobbled centre, and a large waterfront filled with boats offering tours of Paraty Bay. Arriving on a Saturday, I was surprised to find out how busy the town (my hostel included) was. Someone told me that it was essentially a bank holiday weekend for everyone in Sao Paulo as it was a special anniversary of the city’s foundation, so to celebrate this, a lot of middle class Paulistanos flocked to the nearby beaches. On Sunday it seemed to quieten down considerably. I only spent 2 nights in Paraty, but this was about right to explore the town, the quays, the beaches and the old fort which overlooks the town (built to guard against British pirates using canons bought from the British). ... read more
2 Weeks of Relaxing in Brazil
Published: July 14th 2010South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » FlorianópolisWell haven't updated the blog for a while, but I have just finished 2 weeks of Relaxing next to the beach. I went to two places Buzios and Florianopolis. Buzios Description: Byron Bay of Brazil 2 hours north of Rio on the Coast. Wow Buzios is a must for anyone doing the north of Brazil. It is paradise and the hostel we stayed really topped it off. Literelly our courtyard where we ate breakfast everyway looked onto the beach. Couldn't ask for anything better. Didn't really do much here except for relax, swim and get a little sun. Florianopolis Description: 18hrs (bus ride) south of Rio on the Coast I loved Flori not for the place but for the place we stayed (Backpackers ShareHouse) and the people we met. The weather wasnt the greatest but it ... read more
Hello again, After realising our plans of traveling to the northeast coast of Brazil and making our way south towards Rio were a bit more expensive/ambitious than we could enjoyably handle we decided to fly from Manaus (where we ended our boat trip) all the way to the south of Brazil to a place called Florianopolis. After a 1 hour stop over in Rio we continued on to Florianopolis by plane and after catching a taxi at the airport we quickly realised we had entered an entirely different climate from the Amazon, to say the least. It is winter in Brazil right now so the south sees cooler temperatures, much less humidity, and the day we arrived at least- rain. The staff at the hostel informed us that the past week had been very wet but ... read more
