After arriving at florianopolis bus station our canadian friend Nick the Greek insisted we caught a bus instead of a taxi. I was suffering from the street meat that i had eaten 2 days previously but reluctantly agreed. The last bus was horrendous. A hundred people on a 40 seater bus with no ac and a pyscho driver! All whilst i was hanging out of my ring! When we arrived at the hostel i saw the hammocks and thought we'd landed well again! After checking in we headed to the beach for some sun, sand and surf!... read more

Our first stop in Brazil was Florianopolis or Flori for short, a beautiful green island connected to mainland Brazil by bridge. We stayed in Backpackers Sharehouse which was a really cool hostel, overlooking Barra de Lagao beach. This place seemed to collect tired backpackers and the lads were calling a backpackers retirement home. The retired backpackers included Andrew Murphy and his mate Brady, Dave who should be completing his first novel any day now and Jay the mad looking Manc. The weather was not great here as it was overcast and rained alot so we didn't spend as much time on the beach as we would have liked. The days we did spend on the beach were passed surfing, swiming, body surfing in some monsterous waves and checking out the chicas. Nearby beach Praia Mole had ... read more

Day 687 (14.02.09) After our delays on the night bus from Foz we arrived late into Florianopolis bus station and, after sorting out our onward bus tickets for Rio, we caught two local buses to where we were planning to stay. Florianopolis is the gateway to Santa Catarina Island and we´d heard that the south of the island was the quietest and most relaxed section which fit our plans exactly. Before the craziness of five days and nights of partying in Rio for carnaval we wanted to spend a few days chilling out to ready ourselves! After an hour or so on the hot and crowded buses we reached our hostel near the small fishing village of Pantano do Sul and liked the feel of it straight away. A few houses, a small shop, a little ... read more

One can say futebol (pronounced foochieball) is part of the culture here in Brazil. On any given day you can see about one in three people wearing some sort of jersey. So we desided to go to a game to get some culture. We figured what better game than when the two Curitiba teams are playing eachother, what's the worst that can happen? Well, the super fans are called fanaticos and to tell you the truth I couldn't see anyone that wasn't a super fan. Toilet paper, fireworks, giant flags, chanting, singing were all present. Seemed like anything was allowed but beer, not sure why. You can walk the streets with beer in hand, drive your car with beer in hand, do just about anything except no drinking in the stadium, only outside. I have never ... read more

Florianopolis; This was easily the nicest place we had been to so far!! We stayed in Lagoa Hostel which was a bit of a shit hole but it was central and we cudnt ask for more. The old guy at the hostel did turn out d lights at 12 on d button but dat didnt matter cos we were well nd truly hammered by dat time anyway!! People dat we shared our room wit were cool aswell so dat made up for alot of it!! We were about 15mins on bus away from the many beaches they had there but the best part of the beach was the size of the waves. Sorcha didnt head in cos of her new fear of d sea but i loved it. The waves were massive. The beach was full ... read more

The conductor pulled out his phone card, dialled the number on the pamphlet asked for directions and put us on the next bus going that way. It took us a moment to process what had just transpired before I remembered...this is Brazil, the land where the people you meet will either kill or rob you or become your best friend. Well, I´m still alive, have yet to be robbed and my list of best friends just keeps growing. It had been a rather arduous trip. Brazilian buses were not up to their Argentinian or Chilean counterparts. Eighteen hours on a Marcopolo was just too much. The seats were narrow and legroom was non-existent. But the rest that the country had to offer more than made up for this inconvenience. I had spent my last night in ... read more

Arrived in Florianopolis quite late, due to traffic, so when we finally checked into the sunset hostel, our rooms had been taken, so we had to sleep in the TV room, which was OK I guess. The receptionist there orders a mean pizza - we had a pizza each and just fell asleep in front of the TV. Woke up the next day, had a wicked breakfast (they have a toastie machine!), then decided to go to Joaquina beach and try our hand at sandboarding. All I can say is that we're pro´s now! There were so many beaches in Floripa, probably over 40 and we must have visited over 10 of them, our favourites being Barra da Lagoa, Joaquina and Costa da Lagoa which you need to take a litle boat to get to it. ... read more

After we left Rio we took a hop, skip and jump a few hours down the road to a town called Paraty. Upon arrival we realised that our time in Rio had taken its toll and our mental calendars were a bit sideways. We got the dates wrong and we weren´t actually booked into the hostel. With it being the busiest time of the year we were told that there was no room and they offered to allow us sleep on the floor of the balcony. What with all those scourges of mosquitos in the area this would´ve been a bad idea so we were pushed to fork out a little extra and stay in a local guesthouse. The sun was in full effect when we arrived but this was a luxury short lived. Within an ... read more

I took a 20-hour bus ride - one of those eternally monotonous journeys from late afternoon, night and into rain the following morning - from Rio to Florianopolis on the island of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Motels along the highway on the outskirts of Rio had Swiss names: Motel St. Moritz, Motel Lugano. Curiously out of place at first in this tropical setting, but really no more curious than, say, the Flamingo Club in Thunder Bay (long since closed), or the Tropicana in Berlin. We drove through shabby districts where dozens of kites fluttered in the sky like moths, past repair shops and walls covered in graffiti and Bob's Burgers with “Drive-Thru” written in English. At noon the next day we came under heavy rain to Florianopolis and I caught a couple of local buses ... read more
