Imagine this...a huge tropical island off the Southern coast of Brazil. This island is encircled by massive, green mountains full of exotic flora and fauna. Surrounding the island are 42 beautiful beaches, one for every person´s taste. On the east side of the island is a crystal clear lake, big enough for every kind of watersport imaginable, or for just relaxing in the knee deep water that seems to go on forever. The only things separating this lake from the Atlantic Ocean are huge rolling sand dunes with warm, oasis-like pools and lush pine trees. This is Florianopolis. More accurately Ilha Santa Catarina and most people head straight to the paradisical town of Lagoa, so named because it surrounds the lake that I just described. We stayed at a wonderful hostel (Tucano House if you´re heading ... read more

I´ll start where I left off, our imminent attendance at Carnaval 2008, in Florianopolis. We headed into town at around 10pm that night, after a Brahma or two playing cards with some hostel peeps, the name of the game would need censoring for such a public blog. It took us a while to find our feet as the streets were jam-packed in every direction, however we managed to follow a large crowd to a big stage which appeared to be fairly shennanigan filled. Carnival is notoriously popular amongst the more outgoing and outrageous, and so much was in evidence just by watching the show, which was loud and full of colour, glitter, and cheesy pop songs ranging from Christina Aguilera´s hits to ´ít´s raining men´. There was also a high percentage of drag queens doing their ... read more

So we jumped on another two planes and flew south from Recife to Curitiba (Parana), where Soraia grew up and where lots of her family still live. We arrived from boiling (30 C minimum) sunshine in Recife to cold gray rainy skies in Curitiba. And this was supposed to be summer? Its fairly high altitude (900 m) is apparently to blame for the cold weather which really put us off from exploring too much (spoilt after the north?). We just spent two days in Curitiba, mostly eating and recuperating from the hectic programme in Recife. Managed to fit in two BBQs, one at Soraias fathers house and one at her grandmothers, I love a good steak but even I was considering becoming vergitarian after these two days. From Curitiba we head further south to Florianopolis, where ... read more

The last week or so was a beach and relax era. So i was just to lazy to update this blog about what i was doing. Anyway i was in an island called Ilha do Mel where on deserted beaches the sun scorched my back and arms. I walked around the island with two of Brazilan guys which i think were gay. It was funny, them speaking to me a language i dont understand. Me answering with No entindo - i dont understand and the three of us just walking around the island. The Island is a most beautiful place with emty beaches with nice scenery and every day i walked to some other part of the island. From there i moved to florianopolis, where i found two english guys i met previously in Rio. The ... read more

After a quick stop into the madness of São Paulo it was time for some lazy days at the beach. Tasha joined up with me in Rio and we decided to do a bit of traveling together as she heads south for a volunteer program in Buenos Aires. After a quick 12 hour bus ride we met up with my friend Kelib in a city known as Florianopolis in the south of Brazil. Sitting half on the mainland and half on the island of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis shares a variety of cultures and beautiful women. A mixture of European, Brazilian and Argentinian culture blends together to make a unique atmoshpere very different to that of Sao Paulo or Rio. The island itself is as diverse as the culture as it ranges from grasslands to jungle ... read more

After one bus, three flights and a taxi (and a couple of close shaves) we arrived in Praia do Santinho in the northern part of the isalnd of Florianopolis. Shamelessly here for the beaches, we were a little dismayed to be met by torrential down pours as we arrived at our pousada (guesthouse) at 1 am. Also that the whole place was shut down, and the taxi driver wanted to get home... Thankfully the next day everything turned around - a very friendly mother/daughter team running the pousada, a delicious breakfast (fruits, breads, cakes and BACON & EGGS!) and a short walk to a glorious, wide, sandy and almost empty beach. This was more like it. 4 days of beaches, windsurfing, messing about in the waves and some amazing seafood. Perfect.... read more

Well yet again it’s been a while! To be honest I haven’t much to report - I wouldn’t want to bore you all with my endless tales of beach-going, and my complaints of the heat!! December was a fun month - my first ever summer birthday and a summer Christmas! It was hard to get into the spirit though, given the heat and sun - but I managed to cope alright ;-) In the evening of my birthday we went to a Latin American party which was perfect! I hadn’t danced salsa in so long and was missing it! And I spent Christmas in a very traditional Brazilian way - I had the midnight dinner on Christmas Eve with my friend Thiago and his family - which consisted of turkey, farofa, a type of waldorf salad ... read more

Deciding that we were not up for a billion-hour bus ride from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires, we flew back to our first South American city in readiness for our entry into Brazil in time for Christmas. Instead of hostelling for the two nights in BA, we booked into the Fiers Park Hotel in Retiro as a Christmas treat. The hotel was conveniently located to the downtown area and shopping malls and, given our nicer accomodation and surrounds, our second trip to BA was definitely more pleasant than our first. After making some last minute purchases to complete our camping equipment checklist, we boarded our bus to Florianapolis, a mere 26 hours away! Needless to say, it was a looooooooong day. On our arrival on the island of Florianapolis we caught two further buses to reach our ... read more

Florianopolis is a great town in the South of Brazil. I stayed at a very cool Backpackers in Barra de Lagoa, which overlooked the beach and had a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. They also provided free surfboards and kayaks, which I made use of. Basically my Florianopolis days where spent either relaxing at the beach, surfing or kayaking. In the evenings we usually had some beers and caipirinhas at the backpackers bar, accompanied by a game of texas hold'em. One of the days the backpackers organised a boat trip / boozecruise. Oh what fun we had! So all in all, Florianopolis was a great place for some time-out. Easily a place I could have spent more time at, though time is marching on, and Rio is waiting!... read more
