We arrived in Cordoba at 11a.m after a 20 hour ride, immediately checked our packs into the bus station´s left-luggage deposito and made our way to the pre-pay taxi rank. "Eros hotel por favour". A waiting driver gave me a knowing wink. Fifteen minutes later and we pull into what looks like a posh motel. However, here you clock the digital read-out at the entrance and park your car in the corresponding garage or, in the case of arriving by taxi, you walk into the garage (without driver), close the door and proceed through the door at the rear. You are greeted by a swanky en-suite room with prominent sunken jacuzzi, wall-to-wall mirrors, plush seating area, interestingly-channeled TV viewable from anywhere, and an array of lighting to set the mood.... Within seconds the phone rings to ... read more

Den lokale juicebar (a.k.a.

Hab also doch Taktgefuehl ;-) Morgen werden uns das erste Mal ohne Guide in di... read more

Hallo! Touristen halt ;-) ... read more

Rio, the marvellous city. One of the most visually stunning urbanities Ive ever seen, strung out between tropical mountaintops and the coast. Rio is the beach and the beach is rio, the beach culture totally pervades this city, with the footwear of choice (even, it seems, in the business district) is the havaiana sandal, invented here. And in one of the strange ironies in the class war (Brazil has the largest rich/poor gap in the world), the favelas, the poor, took the high ground...and the views. One of the most interesting tours ive taken is the tour into the favelas in Rio. After confirming that the profits from the tour went to community schools, and that it wasn{t such voyeurism as I´d feared, the tour completely changes your perspective on the ´slums.´ Of the many surprises ... read more

So, after the initial nerves I have settled in really well. This is now my fifth and final (I think) day in Rio, and it has been a truly amazing, humbling and eye-opening experience. I have done so much since I updated last Wednesday, so I may just give you the highlights! On Thursday morning I began my exploring of Rio, with an American girl called Sarah, who I hit it off with straight away. She had already been here a few days, spoke Portuguese pretty well and let me tag along with her when she went to Ipanema beach. The coastline round here is just as you´d expect it to be - sandy, blue ocean with big ol´Atlantic waves, surrounded by the most glorious backdrop of islands and mountains to be seen way into the ... read more

Hello from Rio and long time no speak. Since arriving here, we seem to have become infected with a serious case of what doctors would call ´Brazil-itis´. The symptoms are: not getting out of bed, wanting to go to the beach every day, eating and drinking too much and generally behaving like tourists on a two-week holiday, rather than travellers who have to make their life savings stretch over a year. If ever there was a place to blow the budget, however, it´s here. Rio is an incredible city, with lovely beaches, gorgeous weather (even in so-called winter) and beautiful people, most of whom seem to have forgotten to wear any clothes. Seen from the statue of Christ the Redeemer that towers, swan dive-like, over one side of the place, it sits in a stunning crucible ... read more

Well, here we go then. The first real entry in my travel journal. I actually wrote this while sat in a cafe earlier, so it is just being typed here as I am sat at the hostel´s computer. (Excuse the strange punctuation - I can´t find everything I need!). It´s really hot here, around 35 degrees, which is going to take some getting used to after the temperatures we´d been having in the UK before I left. I am so pasty pale at the moment though, but I´ve got my legs out anyway! Firstly, the flight. It was actually a fairly pleasurable experience, given how busy I had been in the days and weeks leading up to my departure. It didn´t seem like 14 hours in a plane at all, and I was lucky enough to ... read more

We arrived in Rio at our luxiourious hotel the Ipanema Plaza overlooking the beach to our left and the statue of Christ to the right - which even to this distance looks magnifico! The weather wasnt that great when we got there but in true British style we headed to the beach in our swim suits, whilst the locals in their thick jumpers handed us towels and offered as grilled cheese. The sand is the best we have ever seen - so fluffy! but obviously we didnt stay there for long. That night we headed for a Brazilian buffet. Maz peaked early and faded away as many do! It was very nice. Basically we learnt early that the buffet consists of providing the diners with a picture of a cow disected into 9 pieces and then ... read more
