The flight to Bolivia was eventful and by that I mean Bolivian belly had caught up with me. I was hunched over in a ball most of the flight with stomach cramps, not a good start. We eventually got to Sau Paulo in one piece and waited on the arrival of our friend Ray from New Zealand. His flight ended up being delayed so he didnt get there until quite late. It really was lovely stuff seeing him after a year and a half, unfortunately I spent the whole of our time in Sau Paulo in bed with flu. Doug and Ray said it was just a concrete jungle anyway and I hadnt missed much. We put off our depature to Rio by a day while I recovered and then headed north for twelve days in ... read more

Due to a table tennis tournament I have had to leave the Lagoa Guesthouse for five nights, but I have booked a return as you can really see why it gets the highest rating of any hostel in Rio, atmosphere, the key to any good hostel. Took a taxi over to Hostel Arco Verde. My driver although pleasant enough was a bit clueless, first he took me to the heart of the Copacabana and stopped at a ´police incident´ to ask directions. Then he drove into what was pretty much a favellla and I knew fine it was wrong and would not let him drop me there. Finally he stopped at a military police post and did some digging and at last he got me to Arco Verde, it~s pure Bates Motel in appearence, but at ... read more

Day 9-14th September Well after 2 days of doing sweet f all, we were bright eyed and ready to head back out. Our time in Rio is nearly at an end and we had to start organising our next stop as we leave on Thursday. We have decided to head south to Foz Do Iguaçu to see the Iguazu Falls. We have heard a lot about how amazing they are and the wildlife is also meant to be pretty spectacular, excellent opportunity to use our lovely SLR! It’s approx 1500km from Rio but the flights are a little out of our financial reach so the bus it is! We’d been on the old internet to find out how to get there and decided that we’d use a company called Pluma, however we could not for the ... read more

We’ve had our longest journey so far; a thirty one and a half hour bus ride from La Paz in Bolivia to Lima in Peru. With a quick over night stay in an excellent hostel we flew over to Sao Paulo in Brazil the next day. From there we took two buses and a cab and ended up in Rio de Janeiro. Three days, only one night in a bed AND we’re still friends. Rio has captivated us, we are totally in love. If there is one place that will be visited again, Rio will have to be it. It’s the first place we’ve been able to walk around without paying too much attention to the pavements, or holes in the pavements more to the point. The cars, although speedy, are much the same as home ... read more

Arrival in Rio On the 5th of August we arrived in Rio de Janeiro. It was dark, it was raining and we could not find a place to stay. Eventually we pitched our tent in absolutely the most awful campsite I have EVER been in, and the most expensive: about R 270,-- for one night in a place where there was no WiFi, cold showers only and no campers we could see. The place was littered with large structures (tents?) covered with large blue pieces of plastic sheet, giving the place the appearance of a refugee camp. Going all the way back to San Salvador in Bolivia, where we finally got our fridge back (unrepaired), we moved for a couple of weeks from campsite to hostel to camping somewhere in the bush, with few real ... read more

After an easy 6 hour bus to rio we got to the bus station and decided it would be best to get a taxi to our hostel until we got our bearings, especially as it was 2 or 3 buses into somewhere we didn't know that was the other option. As it was 7.30pm before we got to our hostel we checked in, went to the supermarket round the corner then just chilled out all night round the hostel. Beach Backpackers hostel was a really good hostel for socialising and meeting new people mainly because you were crammed in like sardines and at first the staff seemed nice. Day 1 (Bearings and Copacabana) We decided for our first day in Rio (mainly because it was overcast) to take it slow, have a look around Botafogo (where ... read more

We arrived into Buenos Aires and once again we split up. The other boys having had booked their room parted at the Airport with the intention of getting to Rio as quick as possible where we wanted to get their just at a slower pace maybe seeing more on the way. We got into a taxi at the airport and asked to be taking to a cheap hotel. The taxi driver brought to a place that was a lot more upper class than we had been used to in recent times and we settled in to two shared rooms. Mully and myself shared a room with an African guy who was apparently from Canada and the US and seemed a bit weird but nothing more was thought about it. We stayed in the hotel for the ... read more

Porto Alegre Our night bus arrived at about 10am in Porto Alegre, our first stop in Brazil or Brasil how they spell it. Cant really understand why we changed one letter!!! We went to the tourist office to get some information about the town and then got a cab to our hotel, in Downtown. We arrived at the same time as a Swedish couple an child from our bus. They didn’t have any money for the cab and couldn’t change their Pesos with the hotel, so I became the good Samaritan and paid for it - all £3 of it!!. We took our bags up to our room, had a rest because the bus was very uncomfortable and then took a walk around to see what was happening. The streets were a lot busier than we ... read more

Saturday the 20th of feb we say not goodbye but a big catchya later to Santiago. We are off to Rio de Janiero! Woo Hoo. First thing realise on our way over on the plane is that we now have to start learning portuguese. Dammit i was just starting to get the hang of spanish. We breezed through the airport and got a bus to Botofogo beach where we stayed. The bus ride told us a lot about this exotic city of which we had previously only seen glamorous footage of. The motorway in showed favela upon favela lining the road. I wasn´t expecting poverty like this. As we drove through the city, that poverty was hidden behind the sun, beach and mountains that is Rio. Definately 2 sides to the city. The next morning we ... read more

Today started off like any other day, we got up around a casual 10am, enjoyed the hostell breakfast and decided to kill time before our pickup arrived to take us to the football.. The annoying thing about the day is that Rio Carnival events organization, who we booked the tickets through have still not contacted us confirming they have our hostel details- even though we sent them 4 emails. This also means we do not know what time the transfer will turn up-if in fact they do turn up. At this stage in the day something just does not feel right. To kill some time we decided to go to the beach for a couple of hours at Botafogo. There is a nice beach, but the sea is full of rubbish which is a shame becaused ... read more
