This blog was supposed to be written just as we left Mumbai for London, it's a little bit late but here at last. The Andamans seem like a distant dream now and remembering what happened is all a little fuzzy. We left (I like to state the obvious here) and had a night in Port Blair, jumped on two planes the next day and ended up in Mumbai. For our last night we cashed in a generously donated 'Get out of hostel free' card and booked ourselves in to a king suite in a very posh hotel. Looking as though we'd just spent the last month living in a hut, we decided to dress in our best clothes (Steve in his brand new suit and me in my one smartish looking outfit). The only problem then ... read more

After peeling ourselves away from Goa we took a short plane ride to Bangalore. We were only there for an evening and half a day but what we saw of it we liked a lot. All of the walls were painted with murals, the weather was just right (not too hot and not too cold) and our hotel was very nice for the price we paid (the staff were a bit grumpy but that seems to be the way in cities everywhere). So after a nice rest stop and a bit of auto rickshaw action we head over to the station to catch an overnight train to Chennai in the East. The journey was only 7 hours and was surprisingly comfortable. We both had a top bunk each (unlike the people below who were sharing their ... read more

Two.. One... Happy New Year! Our time in Goa is almost at it's end. We've stayed here longer than we originally intended because of a nationwide drought in train tickets, but it's been no hardship. Helen left us two days ago after a fabulous holiday and new year celebration. The fireworks and the general atmosphere was electric. We even managed to stay awake 'till gone 2am, the crazy party animals that we are. There are the small things that we'll miss; the best chicken tikka ever, the singing waiters who we've got to know quite well, hut service, sandy bottomed seas and endless games of frisbee and backgammon. There are a few things we won't miss, like the black birds who land on the roof of our hut that sound like elephants, the strange odour that ... read more

December 31st 2010

As 2010 draws to a close we have been slowing down a considerable amount. After a sunny Christmas (which although lovely wasn’t nearly as good without the obligatory sprout and the people we love) Helen arrived on the 27th and moved in to the hut next door. The things we have in common are the things that we are happily filling our days with; swimming, reading, playing games, eating and drinking. We often find that the day has flown by without us realising and that the planned trip to the other end of the beach will be put back another day. We are being treated very well by the bar staff in our ‘hut resort’. We have a brilliant waiter who sings us our orders back and corrects our English. We have started getting ‘hut service’ ... read more

We managed to get the last train tickets in the whole of India, probably, from Agra to Jaipur. We had a very pleasant journey, jumped in a very pleasant car and arrived at our very pleasant hotel (where we upgraded our room to a very pleasant room). We chilled out for a day because Steve got some sort of dodgy tummy, which is strange because we'd been sharing food for the previous few days. However, with internet connection we still looked in to catching a train to Ranthanbore to meet some tigers. That was obviously a bit hopeful of us, as they were full with big waiting lists. We decided to knock the plan on the head and split the extra time between Jaipur and Delhi. We’ll just have to come back to see the tigers ... read more

The Spectacular Taj Mahal

Trains in India get booked up months in advance, especially during the Indian holiday (December & January - the months we’re visiting). So with waiting lists well in to their 100s we decided on taking a bus to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. A mere 3hrs the sales man said (we know their game and sneakily added on another 2hrs). Ha, little did we know that 3 hrs actually means 7 hrs. After a 5am start and being forgotten about, we were eventually picked up by a speedy guy who led us through a maze of alley ways, one of which had what looked like a wedding in full swing. It was quite complicated navigating hoards of people with our bags who were in some kind of food frenzy but we eventually ended up on ... read more

Our last evening in Darjeeling was spent at the lookout point watching the sun set and the colours of Kanchenjunga go from white to orange to red to purple. It was an amazing way to end a fantastic eight days getting to know a unique town full of colour and life. The following day, with our bags packed and belly full of cornflakes and hot milk (not had that since I was a kid!) we jumped in our jeep to start the three and a half hour journey out of the mountains to Bagdogra airport. Thankfully this was during daylight because we not only got to see some spectacular scenery but the driver also got to see the edge of the road - quite important when passing other vehicles and you’re only inches away from falling ... read more

It feels like ages since the last blog, probably because of the huge distance we’ve travelled and how we’ve settled in a town so different from anywhere we’ve been before. We’ve been staying in Darjeeling, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, right next to Nepal. The views are spectacular, especially when they’re not covered in cloud, the temperature is chilly (although sunny during the day) several tops, coats and blankets are worn in the evenings and, thanks to a friend, we’ve discovered Honey Bee Brandy which keeps you nice and toasty too. One of the reasons we chose to visit Darjeeling is because my Mum went to school here, an international boarding school called Mount Hermon. We spent our first day drinking tea and sorting out our Indian mobile. We also met up with my ... read more

Slow boat from Indochina

After chilling out in Luang Prabang we boarded a slow boat for two days, stopping off in Pak Beng for the night. The views from the boat were mind blowing; jungle, limestone karsts, tiny villages and people using the river for food, transport and washing. We’d recommend taking the slow boat to anyone looking to do that journey. We’d also recommend turning up early to bag the ‘soft seats’ which are actually car seats. The wooden bench option didn’t look too comfy, especially after 8 hrs. While we said a fond farewell to Laos, with a promise to return one day, we crossed the (river) border in to Thailand. It was an OK crossing, a bit of a scramble for the arrival cards but otherwise good. We had a leisurely breakfast and set off in a ... read more
