So finally we got to South America! I won´t be doing a blog each day like India, simply because we´re staying in places much longer and there won´t be as much to report plus it´s a completely different trip to India, with more focus on the night life than sightseeing and day-time activities and to be honest I´d much rather be outside sunbathing than sat inside on a computer! The pictures might have to do the talking instead! Before I go on about Rio, I need to give Air France a mention- that flight was great! There was as much wine and champagne as you wanted, your own TV so you could select films/ TV you wanted to watch...finally managed to watch the King´s Speech on there. Really nice food too and complimentary ear plugs and ... read more

Landed on the 17th and welcomed at the hostel El Misti with a ridiculously strong Cairpirinha, we felt ready for Rio. Not to be stopped by jet lag we used our four days to see the main sites and attractions: Ipanema Beach On the first day we ventured to the famous Ipanema beach and was strangly greeted by a Justin Beiber song, which has continued to follow us since - Hopefully this is just a Brazil thing and won´t continue the 3-4 months we´re in South America. It felt like paradise with the mountainous views, blue sea and long stretch of sand. With some swimming, beer drinking and lounging we admired the pretty bikinis and turned away at the speedos. Botanic Gardens After being toasted in the sun on Ipanema beach we moved onto the Botanic ... read more

27/12 With the festivities over we had a new challenge to face, new year - now, I know what you're thinking - you surely must've packed a party dress which would look lovely with heels... if only it were so simple. In Brazil there is a tradition which means everyone wears white for goodwill in the new year, and then you accessorise this with another colour for: Love (red) Health (green) Prosperity (yellow) Peace (blue) I, being the selfish and loved up human being I am decided to wear red (also because I brough red lippy with me) but we STILL didnt have dresses - so we, on advice, decided to head down to the market which must have the most vowels in the world - uruguaiania. It. Was. Crazy. It was like a combination of ... read more

30/12 Today was the day we went to the favela, Rocinha. Now, to just cover a couple of things: a) a favela is best described as a 'ghetto town', they're where the poorest people in the city live, they're infamous for the presence of drugs, there've been riots in some because of the police drug raids and theyre the places where people often get killed in mudslides. Foreigners are generally not welcome without being on some form of tour. b) Lots of people ask how we felt about, effectively, going to gawk at poverty and this was something we were a bit concerned about ourselves. But we had heard really good things about the tours and the projects they fund and frankly the favelas are fascinating, it is a way of life which is nothi8ng like ... read more

24/12 We woke up in Rio on what was in fact Christmas Eve! The last few weeks have gone so quickly! We woke up feeling refreshed and immediately started chatting to some girls from Jersey (Abbey, Katie and Vicky) who are doing a round the world trip too, and their Australian friend Lauren who they had met in Florianopolis They said they were thinking of doing a roast for Christmas and we decided we were definitely in. We headed to the supermarket and the 7 of us spent 55 real (or 20 quid) each on booze and food (including the most disappointing and expensive trifle in the world). We had decided we were going to do, like true Brazilians, caipirihnas but we couldnt find ice, a core ingredient - anywhere - Abbey and I traipsed for ... read more

02/12 So the random adventure continues and indeed its a continuation of 3 idiots abroad as we attempted to reach the Novo Rio coach station to buy tickets to get to Salvador. We wrote down bus numbers, got the change out, paid the three of us on (in amazing portuguese), went through the very restrictive turnstiles (only just thin enough) and we made our trip to 'Rodoviaria' (bus terminal - well... the journey... Tasha described it as like being in an episode of speed, she wasn't wrong. That driver did not know how to yse tge brake peddle as we weaved our way across lanes and through tunneçs - Rita Queen of Speed had nothing on this. It was cool to go on the bus with the locals and see different parts of the city - ... read more

First proper of many: 30th November (am) Nightmare start - bloody snow, up and out the house by 5:30am to drive to Sheffield Train Station! Snow was too bad to go by road - but the train was running fine. I'm so excited to leave but feel like I could sleep for a week, very emotional goodbyes to lots of people. Amy and I are setting off for the big adventure picking up Tasha at Heathrow - still doesn't quite feel real yet. Current listening - Bon Iver, re: Stacks 30th Nov (pm) Continuation of nightmare journey but, relieved to have made it on to the Rio flight. Got to Manchester fine on the train but then we got on the flight and... sat there - for 45 minutes - bloody Heathrow and airspace - a ... read more

Hello Everyone, Well its been a very eventful first few days of my little South American adventure. The flight to Rio was hectic enough in itself. At one point I was sat waiting at Heathrow waiting for Amy and Rosie to arrive and was told that they wouldn't make the connection due to their flight being delayed. At that moment my heart sank. I mean I'm relying on Rosie for her language skills and Amy for her ability to restrain potential muggers to get me through the next few months! The thought of me alone in Rio did not make me happy at all....But alas, after some pretty special running through terminal 5 from the girls, and a delay with our flight, they made it. In the queue for the plane we met our very first ... read more

This is purely from my limited warped perspective whilst travelling around South America for the past 8 weeks. 1. The females in Buenos Aires smoke too much and it is not a good look. 2. Argentinian men love wearing their hair long 70´s and 80´s style and that is not a good look either. ( I know because I have seen photos of such styles in books) 3. Ecuadorian taxi drivers (and retaurants too) will invariably change their music from Spanish to English when you enter their taxi (or restaurant for a meal). It is very well meaning though it is nice to hear the local music and rather than hear 80´s and 90´s music. Celine Dion is so last century. 4. The average life expectancy of Bolivian citizens is 62 years. The Bolivian retirement age ... read more
