Rio 2008/9 1
Published: January 26th 2009South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoDay 1 (Tuesday) - The bus pulled into port 60. My directions said to catch a bus to the main metro station at port 60. I was a little confused but quickly found a bus titled "Estacion Metro" pulling in Port 59. The bus driver was quite helpful, guiding me through the motions necessary to get me a bus and metro ticket. He also let me keep my large bag at the front, which freed me from the heavy lifting and contortion necessary to get it over the turnstile. The bus took off, we were on our way and the anxiety of a new city's stresses seemed to fall off of me. It was an easy walk to the metro and all I had to do was wait for the Botafogo stop. Buses to Rio
Published: February 10th 2009South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoMy journey started at 6am on Monday morning. The local bus to Ilheus was not monumental in any way. The only concern I had was that I didn't remember the route we took and it seemed to me that we were traveling a lot more in the town of Ilheus than the first time but I had nothing to fear as we got to the bus station before 8. At the bus station I bought way to much food and a coffee and engorged myself. The Sao Gerardo bus boarded at 9:15 and I got to my seat. When I got there, I noticed a mother in the aisle seat next to mine and her daughter in the window seat on the other side with an unrelated man in the aisle seat between. The mother tried ... read more

Whilst in Rio we visited santa teresa, sugar loaf mountain and the christ statue overlooking the whole city. We also chilled out on copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and had a messy night out in lapa.
Paraty to Rio de Janeiro
Published: December 9th 2008South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoOn Friday, the 5th of December (it's hard to believe that we're already have been traveling for more than a month together & that I by now have been away from home for exactly 9 months...) it was a time for us to say bye to beautiful Paraty and take a bus direction Rio de Janeiro. Although the trip took about 4.5 hours (a bit more then usually, because of the road works and the Friday traffic in Rio) but it wasn't boring because of all the views around, - changing beaches, changing types of forests, etc. Once we've arrived in Rio, we were greeted by Rodrigo and Patricia, friends of mine whom I've skied whole season with in Bariloche. So, what have we done since: - The very first night we went to the Copacabana ... read more

BRAZIL - Rio, Curitiba & Iguazu
Published: January 9th 2009South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoRIO We were pretty much ready to leave Rio to head south, when a little inconvenience interrupted our trip... Lorena picked up Chicken Pox (Varicela) from who knows where. On our last couple of planned days in Rio, we spent an afternoon in the beach at Ipanema, and went for a walk with Edu around Urca, but we were pretty lazy in general and Lorena did not seem to be feeling to well. The last day the sun was shining, and we had not yet been to the Sugar Loaf (Pan de Azucar), so eventhough Lorena was not feeling too energetic, I dragged her out in a taxi too the Sugar Loaf early in the afternoon. We got to the bottom of the two cable car rides and it was a beautiful sunny day. But we ... read more

Rain in Rio
Published: September 21st 2008South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoHello everyone, we have just arrived in Campo Grande after spending the week in Rio so its about time to give an update on how things have gone so far.... We last updated the blog whilst on Ilha do Mel, which we left as the weather turned pretty nasty, and unfortunately stayed that way in southern Brazil for a week. As we are in the tail end of Brazilian winter it is quite common to be wet, but the rain seemed to follow us up the coast. We headed back to Curitiba on the mainland which was very difficult as the sea was so rough and nearly finished with the whole boat being sick over the side....was not good! followed by the fact that the electricity was down at the bus station and without being able ... read more
Favelas & Football
Published: September 25th 2008South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoHaving witnessed a few very large Favela´s (slums) driving through Sao Paulo, and of course, who hasn't seen or heard of the movie City of God, i admit i was very keen to do a tour through a Favela to see it all first hand. We got picked up, our tour guide advised us that although it might seem a little scary, the people are very friendly.. we get to the entrance of a Favela called Rocinha. We jumped on motorbike taxis which took us up the long, steep and winding street to the top, which was a thrill in itself! Our guide advised she would let us know where & when we could take pictures of people. She warned that any young guys with walkie talkies are drug watchers, as all Favela´s are governed by ... read more
Sugar Loaf Mountain
Published: September 5th 2008South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » BotafogoToday was the day for Sugar Loaf Mountain. The tour entailed two cable car rides up to the top of a mountain and some smelly European girls that obviously didn't believe in deodorant. The mountain beautiful views of the city. You can make out Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance of some of the pictures. Afterwards, we tried to have high tea at Copacabana Palace, but they stopped serving high tea the previous week. They were very nice and tried to accommodate us with a makeshift afternoon tea. Mike was also very nice to appease Jody and sit through tea with her.... read more
