This is some general advice I would like to pass onto anyone who is travelling or thinking of travelling south America, sone of the advice could probably be used travelling any country. Don't forget to pack There are some things that I brought with me that I'm glad I did and some things I wish people would have told me to take before I went away so there's the list: Headtorch - people won't be happy if you switch the light on after a night out at 3am in a dorm, take a headtorch avoid waking up 11 other people Flipflops/Crocs - I preferred crocs as they were sturdier but a decent pair of flipflops would do and help alot in some of the filthy showers you might use. Deet - essential if you are going ... read more

We arrived from Mendoza on a not so great LAST night bus no films, pretty crap food and not very comfy seats but at least it was our last.We got off the bus and headed to the Subto (the subway) with our instructions on a piece of paper on how to get to Millhouse. You could tell Buenos Aires underground is one of te oldest in the world, it was run down, old and dirty, although we still felt reasonably safe.Millhouse hostel was very easy to find from the instructions online and you could tell on arrival why it had such a good reputation, the staff were friendly, the bar area was cozy and there were alot of young travellers hanging about. The first dilemma i had to deal with was which football game to see ... read more

After a not so great nightbus from Cordoba it felt like we walked 10 mile to the hostel but was probably more like 3. When we got to the hostel there was a lovely Kiwi woman who showed us round explained the trips and give us the key for our own 6 bed dorm. We had decided to stay at Emperando Hostel in Mendoza it wasnt on the lively street but it was cheap, had great ratings (and deserved them), you got a free glass of wine every night and then the staff were really friendly. As we were both shattered from lack of sleep we slept most of the day, went to the supermarket then just chilled around the hostel. It was the first time in South America we had cooked for ourselves and not ... read more

We arrived at Cordoba around 8am after a brilliant bus we were refreshed. We walked to our hostel (Turning Point Hostel) and got checked in straight away. We decided to book our bus tickets to Mendoza for the following day through the hostel 145 pesos (about 25 quid) then have a look around Cordoba. I liked Cordoba, we found out pretty much straight away that there wasn't much to do there but it was just nice walking around the city, it had quite a large university in the center and parts of it reminded me of Leeds. I decided to get my haircut as it was getting abit jungle like and even though the barber spoke fairly good English i just asked for the same as the guy before me as it looked like i normally ... read more

We got off not the greatest bus in the world at the external bus station in Foz do Iguazu and had to get a bus to the central bus station. Still unsure what we were going to do with our bags we took them to the supermarket and had beakfast. After breakfast we were recommended to leave our bags at a little shop in the TTU (transport terminal urbano) while we went to the falls on the Brazilian side. We were told by quite a few people to miss the Brazilian side but again never listen to everything you hear because in my opinion you have to see both sides of the falls to fully appreciate them. Although it is quite expensive with it being 37 reales for the day and a full day on the ... read more

As we had already been to Sao Paulo we knew exactly what we wanted to do (everything we missed first time). We arrived in Sao Paulo around 3 ish and decided because we were only staying one night it was pointless staying in the new Okupe, as it wasnt near a tube station, so we stayed at the origional Okupe. We checked in and the first thing we wanted to do was watch sunset from the top of Unique. So we headed towards the park following our trusty resturant map, gaining speed as the sun fell, it took about 40 mins to get there. What we didnt know was that unless your staying in the hotel you can't get to the top until the resturant opens at six pm, obviosuly by then the sun was set. ... read more

After a 4 hour bus ride that ended up 3 as our bus driver had no concept of speed, we arrived in Agra Rios a little fishing village where you catch the ferry to Ilha Grande. We booked our ferry and hotel in the bus station then walked to the harbour. We had been warned about Ilha Grande not having any cash machines or banks so we got out quite alot of money not knowing how long the sun would keep is there. When we got off the 40 minuter catamaran (R$20) it was pouring down in Ilha Grande, we were not best pleased. The only thing that put us in a better mood was the woman from our hotel was waiting with a brolly. The hotel itself made us happy, Yes Posada was it's name ... read more

After an easy 6 hour bus to rio we got to the bus station and decided it would be best to get a taxi to our hostel until we got our bearings, especially as it was 2 or 3 buses into somewhere we didn't know that was the other option. As it was 7.30pm before we got to our hostel we checked in, went to the supermarket round the corner then just chilled out all night round the hostel. Beach Backpackers hostel was a really good hostel for socialising and meeting new people mainly because you were crammed in like sardines and at first the staff seemed nice. Day 1 (Bearings and Copacabana) We decided for our first day in Rio (mainly because it was overcast) to take it slow, have a look around Botafogo (where ... read more

We arrived in Brazil and our luck was up and down for the first night after getting off the plane, the first thing we saw was McDonald's, bonus McChicken meal thankyou very much. As we had got a plane at last minute I still had 145 Bolivianos left in my pocket and soon realised when nowhere in the airport would change them that I had a problem. Anyway I was sure somewhere in Sao Paulo would change them so I forgot about that problem, got a map from tourist information and headed on the airport dropoff bus to Sao Paulo (best way to get to and from the airport from central Sao Paulo). The woman at tourist information had told us to ignore Lonely Planet and keep clear of Republica, it was rough, so we took ... read more

We have been fairly lucky with parades and festivals in South America seeing one in Agua Caliente and now being in Bolivia during their Independence day. We booked into a hotel we found in our Bolivia book it was OK, hot water, double bed, and fairly cheap (110 B´s for a double). Then we went to a restaurant also recommend in our Bolivia book I don't remember the name but it doesn't matter me and Hollie renamed it ´Por Favor´anyway. The waiter who was too smartly dressed for the restaurant said Por Favor before and after everything he reminded me of a Bolivian version of Manuel from Faulty Towers. The food was good me opting for a steak after using our phrasebook and being able to tell the waiter I wanted it with no blood with ... read more
