The Pantanal - the best place to see wildlife in a natural environment. It was amazing here, huge wetlands more than half the size of France!! We booked a 5 day tour with Ecological Expeditions with two friends we met on the way - Jonny from Leister and Diederick from Holland which resulted in a hilarious couple of days. We were picked up in a jeep and taken to the campsite, on the way we saw Caprivahs ( giant guinea pigs! ) very funny animals which me and Kate had been dying to see! The first morning - awoken by birds around 5am in time for breakfast at 5.30 and ready to leave by 6 for a guided hike!! Yes it was hard the first morning but soon got used to being woken even earlier ... read more

Hello from civilization of sorts, Just returned from our 3 day expidition into the heart of the Pantenal. Looked fabulous in the guide book and strangely the guy who sold us the trip told us much the same story. Having spent a night too long in Campo Grande ( ie one night ) I was looking forward to our big adventure in the wilderness. We met the other characters in our group and thankfully they all had English as a first language which saves the polite stilted conversations about random countries I´m never going to visit. The camp was interesting, basically a collection of huts with hammocks slung very closely together and some scratty little tents. The option was hammock or tent, we requested tent and were told they were all soaking inside so why give ... read more

...unless a piranha gets us first! The jungle adventures where about to begin. We though we had seen bugs, we though we had walked tough terrain, we thought we had roughed it! Oh dear, we had not seen anything yet! Having successfully made it across the border and to our HI hostel in Corumba, we set about confusing all the Portuguese speakers by rabbiting on the pigeon Spanish we had perfected over the last few weeks! The hostel was nice with a lovely pool and hammocks but completely empty apart from us and a guy we were sure was an axe murderer. This coupled with the fact that Corumba is an unremarkable town with little to see or do, apart from the dramatic sunsets over the river, meant that we decided to cut the trip short ... read more

The Amazon may get all the glory for flora and fauna, but it's the lesser known Pantanal that really has the wildlife for spotting. Located mostly in Brazil, but bleeding into Bolivia too, the Pantanal is basically a huge savannah/swamp teeming with all sorts of birds, reptiles, and mammals. For about half of the year the large majority of the area is flooded so it's allowed animals to thrive with little human encroachment for farming (although 90% of the Pantanal is privately owned and cattle, horses, and water buffalo roam quite freely). There's basically one long dusty road that goes through the entire expansive area, and that's it. So, leave from the city of Campo Grande I got a private 5-hour van ride out to the camp. (I was the only one going out to the ... read more

Campo Grande & Pantanal - Took an (expensive!) flight from Montevideo to Campo Grande, which is quite a large town and supposedly the gateway to the pantanal. The Greentrack rep for pantenal tours met me at the airport and took me to his office located in the seedy bus terminal in Campo Grande. In his own words, "I'm sure there is a little trap door in this terminal which leads straight to hell". After giving me a pretty scetchy description of the tour intinerary and so-on, he recommended a hotel across the road and also took me to dinner and also to a nice bar with live music. A few hours later I was looking forward to relaxing in the hotel room to watch some cable TV when the skies absolutely opened and in a couple ... read more

Lucy forgot to mention I was called up to represent my country whilst in the Pantanal. I tried not to get too overwhelmed making my debut against Brazil away but ultimately there was little I could do to prevent a 5-3 shock defeat. The shock wasnt we lost but that Brazil played long-ball! I would like to say it was one of the proudest moments of my life to pull on that Engalnd jersey and run out in front of a packed house but as we had to play ¨skins¨ and the crowd buggered off as soon as the lunch bell was rung it would be a lie. That is except one hilarious Brazilian who made the joke about the English needing sun-tan cream every two minutes. Maybe I should have took some notice as by ... read more

So as you may have gathered Heather has headed home. Last Saturday she headed back to La pAz and I continued on for a few more weeks. I was very sad to see her go. What Heather didn´t mention was that Bolivian night clubs are an interesting place where they seem to only play late 70s and early 80s disco music (OK yes I was in heaven...). What interested me most was that they don´t know the YMCA dance...we tried in vain to teach many of them...but they didn´t get it. Wierd! Our compact group of hardy travellers - now down to 3 tourists and 2 guides headed for Brazil. We caught a flight (AirSur who gets reject planes from Mexico) to Santa Cruz before catching the so called train of death. As a brief aside ... read more

Now, we wouldn´t want you to think that our travels have been all fun and games...there are the bits in between as well. For example from Ouro Preto we took a bus for 24 hours to get to Campo Grande. Now its not as bad as it sounds as the buses are good and we managed to sleep some of it, but still after about 20 hours madness does begin to set in, followed by uncontrolled giggling at nothing. Then there is the tiredness for the next day or so and the continual feeling that you are still moving. But all of this was worth it when we picked up a 4 night tour to the Panatanal. The Pantanal is a large area of wet land and forest that right now (the dry season) hosts a ... read more
