26th - 30th March When I was a child I was obsessed with wildlife & loved to read Gerrald Durrell´s books describing his career working with animals. In one book he described travelling to the Pantanal on an animal collecting expedition for an English zoo (not exactly PC in this day & age but when I was a kid it was spell binding.) His descriptions of the abundance of exotic wildlife there had me buzzing. So when we came to Brazil I begged And for us to go & to my relief she agreed, although somewhat reluctantly. We both new it was the end of the rainy season & that the Pantanal would probably be flooded & the mosquitoes would be horrendous & it would be hot but I don´t think either of us had ... read more

In the panatnal there are lots of things you want to see and more things you don´t want to see. sometimes the lines are a little blurred. of course, nobody wants to see mozzies, let alone let them destroy you. the mozzies descended on us with such force that no amount of mozzie repellant could keep them at bay. anaconda´s on the other hand ... part of you wants to see them, and part of you doesn´t want to see them. same with crocs and piranha´s. you want to see them. but just not too close. url=http://fliqz.com/FliqzWebPublic/Dynamic/FliqzwebPublic.swf?skinPath=http://fliqz.com/FliqzWebPublic/Dynamic&file=10477&autoplay=0&progressive=1' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' width='500' height='470'Video: Belinda and a local we ventured into the pantanal with high hopes of a mesmerising and rewarding insight into the wonderful critters and creatures that call the pan... read more

After the relative comfort of Bonito we jumped on a bus and headed for the Pantanal. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Pantanal it is a huge wetland teeming with critters of all sorts of shapes and sizes. A few hours on a bus was followed by 2 hours on the back of a truck on a rough old road right through the middle of the wetland. We met our guide for the next 3 days Paulo who was a character. He grew up on a cattle property in the Pantanal and was a classic country boy - but Brazilian. His accent (when speaking Portugese) was really different (almost Mexican). Our accommodation was simple but cool. Pretty much camping but some group members were not really prepared for roughing it. We decided to ... read more

8th Feb '07 - 24th Feb '07 I stayed on a farm in the Pantanal for two of my three nights. The Pantanal is to the best of my knowledge, the biggest swamp in the world. My bed was a hammock. First stop was the nearby river for a spot of piranha fishing. You had the choice of getting into the water or fishing from the bridge. I chose the water. So i got to wade chest deep into a river full of piranhas and caiman. The water was the warmest I had ever been in. It was warmer than every shower I'd had since i got to South America. But i still couldnt catch any pirahnas. I was useless. But I came back the following day and caught a couple. I got a set of ... read more

Tegenover het busstation is the Hostel International. Daar ... read more

Another bus ride and more bumpy roads, we arrived in Campo Grande at 6:00 am in the morning. Being the only gringos on the bus, we were greeted by a lot of young men trying to sell us a trip into the Pantanal! However, having booked in advance meant that Israel from our chosen outlet did his best to shake off the competition. On the same day we started our 3 day camping tour deep into to the swamp. The pantanal is the biggest wet land of the world and covers 230 000 km² and over half is flooded annualy. It is an excellent place to spot and encounter wild life and experience real undeveloped wilderness. As we chose a rather odd time to visit the Pantanal - Carneval and rainy season - we had to ... read more

Ok so after about 25 hours on the move 3 buses and 1 jeap ride later we arrived in the pantanel home of the giant guinea pig that we have been searching for. Spent 6 very memorable days here geting up at 5.30am and out forraging for armadilos, caimens, racoons, cappiburys (named steve the giant guinea pig),parrots, toucans, praying birds and lots more. Did lots of trecking saw armadilos, yes crunchy on the outside smooth on the inside! fished for caimens and piranihs and scrambled round in lots of bushes getting stung by wasps and running for my life. Our gide was gabrielle who was loverly. Its amazing to see someone running round in bare feet catching crocks and armadilos and things, I got stung by a wasp on the first day and he found some tree ... read more
