Now the journey here was a bus ride with a difference, after a leisurely morning and breakfast in Copacabana we boarded the bus about 1pm for the trip to La Paz. An hour down the road admiring the beautiful scenery we came to a stop at the lake crossing. That meant everyone off the bus to jump on a small boat to cross the lake at a cost of 15p whilst our bus drove onto a floating raft to cross the lake. We all got a little concerned when half way across our bus seemed to be drifting further away, and even more worried when someone pointed out the raft our boat was on was interestingly named Titanic. A sight which had to been seen to be believed a bus bobbing along next to you across ... read more

Take my breath away....literally Finally on the road again and after the smelliest 17 hour bus journey ever from Santa Cruz, we arrived in La Paz to be greeted by a fantastic view of the snow capped Andes. Unbelievable view of the city as the bus made it's way down through the hillsides, crammed with houses up as far as the eye could see. Treated ourselves to 5 days of luxury in the Monte Carlo Hotel. Had hot showers for the first time in 3 weeks and one of those modern devices that allows you to play your own music...I think they call it a docking station! Breafast was included in the price but was, to be honest, poor! (child friendly rating) It takes some getting used to this high altititude so did the sensible thing ... read more

La Paz!! Cocaine capital of the world, yay....... Again due to the fudged up bus systems in Berrrrrrlivia, we arrived to our hostel at 5 am. the hostel was one of the best we have stayed in, has 26 rooms and a huage bar for the people staying there. After sleeping for a while this guy woke me up by looking at me and going "tilly......tilly is that you?" (or something like that) and trying to get in bed with me..... that was confusing. We slept till about 12 and me and george went to have breakfast, people weere already doing shots at the bar shouting; "1, 2, 3, Wilrd rover!!!" (what it was called), so we were like riiiiiight and had a fry up. WE then left for the witches market, called this because it ... read more

1 de Junio We finished our 14 hr journey, getting in at just past midnight. Apparently ALL americans must pay $135 each just to enter Bolivia, and they only take certain mints of US bills, so that was a hassle! Finally we got out ands got a cab. La Paz is a huge city nestled in a valley at 3,200 meters above sea level (about 10,000 ft). The way to our hostel involved a couple 1 way streets, which our driver just reversed up, instead of going around!! Got in and passed out. We woke up this morning with an ear splitting headache from the altitude, so we stayed in and slept all day. A guy in our hostel bought us some coca leaves (used to make cocaine, but natives here chew the leaves it for ... read more

24.5.2012 Big day today, La Paz is very vibrant and busy, we really love it. Very, very cheap living here, prices are exceptional for most things. Good shopping spree place. Our hotel is right down the bottom of the gully in the commercial area, so to walk anywhere its up!! both sides - John says he will be glad to go because of the altitude, SOB, dry and stuffed up noses for both of us. We set off with our guide Nemesis this am, he is so passionate about his country - he has been wonderful. Mount Illimani sits behind us at 6439 mts very pretty with snow covered peaks. We visited the Presidential Palace, Cathedral, National Congress, Witches markets and then outside of La Paz, Moon Valley, amazing erosion of canyons and pinnacles that form ... read more

Writing from a small island in Honduras it's hard to think of what to say about Bolivia. It wasn't untill we were on the plane that I realised Central America probably wouldn't be the same, and it's not. Being in La Paz you could feel Bolivia was a bit behind the other countries in S.A. Bolivia seemed to have a little less money and a little less infrastructure but more political spirit and drive to improve every difficulty they face as a collective people. Within two weeks there was 2 seperate strikes and this wasn't a bunch of C.N. workers sitting under a tarp with some Tim Hortons coffees and a box of doughnuts. They had firecrackers and small pieces of dynamite (which we were told were harmless) that rattled windows and set off car alarms ... read more

23.5.2012 On the road by 8.00a.m. Very scenic drive mostly following the shores of Lake Titicaca as it shores are shared with Peru and Bolivia. Very pretty snow capped peaks, blue skys and quite warm but they all think it is very cold, no freeze so not cold for us. Hit the border about 11.00a.m. our Bolivian guide met us and we changed all our money etc before crossing the border. It is not a very common border where we are crossing at Desaguardero but it all went pretty well, one of the officers was on a power trip but apart from that all good. Elder did his own thing and met us in the van on the Bolivian side, they don't get on too well with Peru and don't really like the tour guides so ... read more

I spent my last evening in San Pedro de Atacama visiting the incredible Valle de la Luna at sunset, a huge dry valley that looked a little like the place where Luke Skywalker grew up. I then got back to my hostel, packed my things and took a night bus to Arica, on the Chilean border with Bolivia. I stayed in Arica for only a few hours, hanging out at the shabby bus terminal and eating some questionable soup with the local drivers, before taking a comfortable bus over the border to La Paz. This took me through the unbelievable scenery of the Bolivian altiplano, a huge high-altitude plateau between two mountain ranges. After about an hour driving through El Alto, the sprawling surrounding city, a huge valley was revealed with thousands of buildings clinging to ... read more

Crazy La Paz We arrived on a bus heading through really run down towns first, before skirting the valley to see the massive city of La Paz covering the whole valley... Immense! We were instantly confronted with the sheer numbers of people here - and its altitude! We decided on Wild Rover hostel (Irish run party hostels, chosen by irish friend Darren) and we all managed to get a room for the night... It really was a party place, we were surrounded by 18 year olds on their gap years but it was good fun all the same. We were advised by the hostel to be very careful over the next few days as it was labour day and there were hundreds of protests in the city. With protests come armed police who indiscriminately fire tear ... read more
