Beijing, China We were very excited about China given the ball ache it was to get our visa and we were pleased to come somewhere really culturally different from Vietnam which had a heavy western influence, particularly in the south. The subway is excellent and we had no worries finding our hostel - 365 hostel - which is fantastic and highly recommended for anyone visiting Beijing! That first night was the Olympic opening ceremony and we were damned if we were gonna miss it, so we went to bed at 10 and set alarms for 3 am to catch it. We absolutely loved watching it (despite all commentary being in Chinese!!!) but we were able to read the BBC feeds to understand what was going on. We were both swelling with pride and thought it was ... read more

Vietnam We started our Vietnam adventure by traveling from Phnom Penh to Hoi Chi Minh City where we stayed in the 70 hotel in district 1 - the hustling backpacker district! It could be said that this is where our troubles began.... We were unable to get our Chinese visa in England because of timings so had to wait until Vietnam and boy is it tricky, they literally want your blood! Firstly the address on the website was wrong, so after searching for a couple of hours on our first day, we finally arrive to the consulate, just to be told it was closed and to come back the next day... There is no 'official' list of what you need to get your visa in HcMC so we read travel blogs and gathered a long list ... read more

After our little 6 hour journey from Siem Reap, we arrived in driving rain but managed to get a tuk tuk to our hotel - the Okay Hostel. It took ages with cars and tuk tuks going the wrong way down the roads, on the pavements - you name it! Needless to say, road markings, zebra crossings and traffic lights mean absolutely nothing in Asia!! There were thousands of people on mopeds - it's the main form of transport here as parking is limited and they go out in all weathers and with as many as 5people on any one little bike. Babies, shopping and huge boxes are often spotted. Hilarious! One bloke had 8 massive boxes stacked high on the back of his bike - one wobble and it would have been a disaster. Anyway, ... read more

Cambodia Siem Reap - the land of Angkor Wot. Siem Reap is small, compact town which was brilliant in many ways. Our hotel was right by the aptly named 'pub street' so that helped! We spent the afternoon having a few drinks with an English local who filled us in on all things Cambodian. He also did his best to keep the kids at bay who constantly pester you to buy things, including photocopied books which were fab quality and only $4!! Copyright? Nah - not here!! We also aw alot of beggars with missing limbs - landmines. We went to pub street in the evening for delicious Cambodian curry and ended up in the infamous Angkor what pub - backpacker heaven! We only wanted to stay for one drink but the heavens then opened and ... read more

Laos Will post pics later! Most are on other camera... We hadn't originally planned to come to Laos but we were persuaded by the many tales from backpackers about how good the Tubing was (on a tube down a river stopping at river bars!) so we thought we would give it a go and besides, it meant another cool stamp in our passports! We got the overnight train from Bangkok and this time we were in the much better lower bunks, so slept very well indeed! We arrived a couple of hours late into the border of Thailand and Laos. We sorted our visas out and got a shuttle train over the friendship bridge into Laos which was cool because it ran actually onto tracks in the middle of the main road whilst the traffic was ... read more

Bangkok We took the overnight train to Bangkok after a boat and bus ride to Suratani. We had to wait for 4 hours at the train station and saw rats the size of cats which made Tash scream in shock the first time she saw one - ha ha, Trace wasn't at all pleased to see the little cretines either but was able to retain some composure! The train was actually quite comfy, our seats converted into beds and we were allocated the top bunks which was a little annoying as that was closest to the air conditioning which was bloody freezing and they didn't turn the cabin lights off, so even though we had curtains it was still really light, but hey for a 12 hour trip costing £17 it wasn't to be grumbled at. ... read more

Koh phangnan Firstly, we just want to say that we are writing these blogs as our sort of diary of our trip, so apologies if some of it is a bit dull but we wanted to keep a record of all that we have done so that we can look back at the great times we have had! We hope you enjoy reading it though. We have now also uploaded pictures from the Thailand islands, so take a look if ya wanna! We took the boat (what else) from Koh Samui across the gorgeous gulf of Thailand to Koh phangnan which is home to the Full Moon Party held once a month. Sadly, our timings meant that we were to miss this but I think it's fair to say that we have both partied hard enough ... read more

Koh Samui We arrived late afternoon after an epic journey. We entertained ourselves by watching downton abbey which we had downloaded on the iPad (a godsend on long journeys I tell you). Why the hell hadn't anyone told us how brilliant this series was?! We loved it and started imagining what we would be like if either of us owned a country pile... We did our usual thing of turning up and not having any idea of where to stay (adds to the adventure of it all) so we got a cab to take us to chewang noi, north of the party beach and a little quieter. We asked around and it was relatively expensive for Thailand so trace decided to leave Tash at a bar and go hunt herself rather than have us both lugging ... read more

Koh Phi Phi Upon arrival at Koh phi phi (pp) we noticed just how divine the Indian ocean was - azure blue, emerald and crystal clear warmth. Yum. We weren't sure were to stay so trace suggested Rantee Bay which was quiet and lovely and away from the magaluf feel of the town centre (a posher magaluf mind you). We arrived at Rantee bay and got shown our shack by the sea (Runtee bay sunset resort - resort a loosely described word here!) - it was just that, a shack. We both thought that it was a little under what we could cope with but we would cope, that was until Tash lifted up the mattress cover to find a swarm of ants all over and in the bed... That was it - luxuries we can ... read more

Thailand - Krabbi and the island of Koh Lanta Upon landing we found our way through buses and boats to the lovely island of Koh Lanta. Trace had been here before, pre tsunami, and had lovely memories of the place. When we got to the island we discovered that it had been raining for the last few days but we were lucky - nothing but gorgeous sunshine. It was also Green season, their low season so we knew it wouldn't be too busy. With that though came the realization that a lot of hotels were closed!!! We got dropped off and picked up a tuk tuk to take us to a nice place.. Now imagine, two girls, two big back packs and two smaller day packs crammed into a space no bigger than a toilet.. Let ... read more
