Background: Bolivia, named after independence fighter Simon BOLIVAR, broke away from Spanish rule in 1825; much of its subsequent history has consisted of a series of nearly 200 coups and counter-coups. Comparatively democratic civilian rule was established in 1982, but leaders have faced difficult problems of deep-seated poverty, social unrest, and illegal drug production. Current goals include attracting foreign investment, strengthening the educational system, resolving disputes with coca growers over Bolivia's counterdrug efforts, and waging an anticorruption campaign.

Hmmmm, was sure I´d added another entry but apparently not. Therefore this´ll have to be a mega catch up page again. San Pedro De Atacama is a serious desert town. It´s also big on tourists, with something like 50% of the people you see on the streets being gringos. I arrived about half a day in front of Jen and Hector and went off to find the hostel I´d booked (through Hostelworld.com of course!). The Purpirica Hostel had really good reviews in Hostelworld, but when I eventually found it I was VERY disappointed! It´s way out of town, past the cemetery [View Full Entry]

Making our way up the rio Beni it felt like we were embarking upon a real adventure. The jungle you read about as a child, those tales of mysterious Africa, felt real as we headed up to our jungle lodge deep in the Amazon basin. This definitely felt different to our jungle trip in Peru. There was just something about it that made you feel like you were venturing into the unknown. This was the jungle that I had signed up for. A gruelling seven hour boat ride from Rurrenabaque and we arrived at the river bank ready for a half [View Full Entry]

Most people arriving for a tour of the Amazon would be well prepared in advance - drink plenty of fluids the night before, get a good nights sleep and brace yourself for the humidity, heat and general uncomfortable ness of Amazon life. Not us. Drink fluids we did the night before, just the wrong type, and lots of the wrong type. And so on the morning of our flight (the night after our hostel trivia quiz and celebratory shots at winning best team name) to Rurrenabaque a small town in the Beni region of North East Bolivia from where we would [View Full Entry]

Hi it is Nitzan and I am going to write a long blog. From La Paz we drived 20 hours in a bus to a small town called Rurenabaque. There we found a hostel that was full of Israelis but we had no choice. The next morning we found an agency to go to the Pampas. The Pampas is a kind of a savanna. The next morning we woke up early and got on the way with our group to the Pampas. We drived in a jeep for three hours and on the way we saw lots of hawks, eagles, and even one [View Full Entry]

Last Friday, 23/10 I arrived in La Paz from Copacabana. I spent pretty much the entire day trying to obtain my Paraguayan Visa--which I recently found out was actually a planning mistake and now Im traveling to Paraguay because I feel that I HAVE to, given the expense. I took the 6:15 flight from La Paz to the jungle town of Rurrenabaque, which borders Parque Nacional Madidi. Even making the flight was very lucky, as there had been rain for several days prior, and flights cannot land in Rurre after rain because it is made of dirt. The flight in itself [View Full Entry]

The flight to Rurrenabaque from La Paz was just 35 minutes and took us from the freezing snow covered mountains to the steaming hot jungle. After the excitement of the Death Road, we decided to spend the day lazing around in the comfortable hammocks in the Hotel Oriental and booking our pampas tour for the next day. The tour companies all seemed to offer pretty much the same trip - 3 days and 2 nights on the river watching the wildlife - and so we went with a company called Dolphin who we had been told were pretty good. The next [View Full Entry]

We´re back from our 3 day trip to the Pampas (amazon lowlands)! The trip was great (the weather could´ve been better, but oh well) because we were able to see a lot of wildlife. We were skeptical that we´d be able to see all the wildlife they advertised, but we weren´t disappointed at all. I´ll get to that in a little bit. The first day was quite tiring because Myra and I had to wake up at 4:00 to catch a 6:15 flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque. It sounds like an unimaginable hour to wake up at, but we´ve had [View Full Entry]

Heading into the Jungle and down the Death Road Funny - time seems to fly when you work hard but when travelling one would assume time is travelling slower. I can confirm that is NOT the case! We are now 55 days into our trip and I need to do some catching up on our travel stories. From our last trip to the Salt Flats we went to La Paz - officially Bolivia´s capital at 3660m. The first view of La Paz was breathtaking. The city is located at the base of several mountains and houses are built all the way [View Full Entry]
