We are in waters of the South Atlantic somewhere north of Uruguay. I am no longer sleep deprived. It feels nice. I woke-up this morning and watched the sunrise on our balcony. It felt amazing. I got ready to have breakfast at 7:30am and went to kiss Kamie goodbye and he decided breakfast sounded good to him, too. We both had steaming hot omelets. They gave us “toast” but it was not toasted – just bread with strawberry jam and orange marmalade. We sparked an entertaining discussion with several of the employees about coffee. I ordered a regular coffee with some milk. Then I put ice in it. This intrigued them and they approached me and started asking questions. They told me it would be normal for the Italians onboard to drink 10 espressos a day. ... read more

It’s been over 48 hours since I wrote a blog post but it feels like 4 or 5 days. We are on the ship. I will back-up and tell everything we’ve went through to get here. It’s A LOT. For starters, let’s back-up to the night we spent in Miami because Kamie has a funny tale to tell… he was outside smoking and the hotel airport shuttle drove-up and the driver proceeded to back into a lady’s car. The driver pulled-up and stayed in the shuttle van… she came outside… he still didn’t get out..… so Kamie told on him! The shuttle driver denied it! There was a shouting matching in Spanish between the shuttle bus driver and the lady (everyone in this area of Miami speaks Spanish as their primary language). She didn’t have too ... read more

Blog 3 -No Blue Whales Let's start with the whales. Our primary reason for visiting Chiloe and Raul Marin was to see the biggest animal on the planet (read in your best Attenborough's voice). Sadly we didn't see any but nevertheless we had an amazing time, especially in Raul Marin. On our last day we had to hang around for a ferry that was 6 hours late. I had booked a night at a small hostal and Vanessa rang to say we would be late. The boat was much fuller than on the outward trip but we got some sleep, we eventually arrived at 1am but had to wait to get off as an ambulance was waiting to take a woman who had been taken ill. The ferries run late, the staff are surly and know ... read more

I have been able to see at least a portion of most of the NFL playoff games on the ship’s TV system. I’m not sure how all that works, but the U.S. broadcast networks are not routinely available on the ship, and, regardless of the network broadcasting the game, all the commercials have been promoting ESPN programming. Regardless, Holland America put on a very nice Super Bowl Party in the World Stage on the theater screen on Sunday evening. It was well attended with a crowd of about 5-4 Kansas City Chiefs fans in attendance. Unfortunately, the game didn’t start until 8:30 PM local time, getting very close to my bedtime. I left at half time to perform my nightly ritual, watched the third quarter from my loveseat (while the sleeping pill took effect) and began ... read more

First, since I have opted to participate in three shore excursions in Buenos Aires, I have decided to compose two blogs to reduce the number of pictures and the amount of verbiage in each blog and to make them more a little more “user friendly” for my readers. It was a short, overnight sail upstream on Río de la Plata from Montevideo, Uruguay to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sunday, February 12, 2023 would be our first of three days in the capital of Argentina. "Buenos Aires" can be translated as "fair winds" or "good airs," but the former was the intent of the 16th century founders (I am told in the literature) when the city’s name is placed in the context of the original name, "Real de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre." The Buenos Aires ... read more

It was an arbitrary shot for me to define where the subject of Antarctica ended and that of Argentina began. Both transpired in the southern Atlantic Ocean and both occurred under less than pleasant weather conditions. All I know is that our stop in Falkland Islands had been cancelled because of high seas, and we spent three days on the oceans blue. We had not set foot on solid ground for nine days. That stint gave me cause to admire the crews of yore like those of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria and the passengers of the Mayflower even more greatly than I did before. After all, they didn’t even have a comedian to entertain them in the evening, and I doubt that cheesecake was on the menu! By the time I had finished my ... read more

Tuesday 31st January - Friday 3rd February 2023 Apparently we did sleep back in Puerto Natales but, after an unwelcome early alarm and finding ourselves sat back on a bus so soon, it didn’t feel like it! Except now we were sat on a bus on our way to Argentina. With only a few days left before plans to meet a friend in Rio, Brazil, we are really only transiting through this country but have managed to get a few nights in to get a taste for it. First stop, after the 5hour bus across the border, was El Calafate. A small town sat on a huge lake, it is the glacier gateway of Argentinian Patagonia, and somewhere we shall have to come back to. With not enough time to take a tour out to one ... read more

Puerto Iguazú I want to start with an apology to those of you who messaged me via the blog site. For some reason the messages didn’t trigger alerts to me so I didn’t know they were there and only found them by accident yesterday. Thank you for your messages, I love receiving them and will reply to you all shortly. This is a short blog to record the stay at Tupa Lodge I am still in PI, as after trying again there was still no suitable accommodation in San Ignacio. I did not want to go further to other towns as it would have meant a six or seven hour journey each way, but I was getting bored with the Hotel Tourbillon where I was staying. It was fine for visits to the falls which are ... read more
