South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 29th 2023

Most of our passage from Punta Arenas, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina through the Cockburn and Beagle Channels was made under the cover of darkness. The Beagle Channel was named after the ship that carried English naturalist, Charles Darwin around the world. Most of the shore excursions include a disclaimer that bad weather is not cause for a refund, so I held out for a weather forecast before I spent $164.95 on the shore excursion, “The Train to the End of the World.” By the time I was ready to commit, however, the tour was sold out. I initially asked to be placed on the waiting list, but, as the time drew nearer, I requested to be removed from the waiting list and purchased the shore excursion, “Lake Escondido Scenic Alpine Drive.” Since I have been mystified ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 26th 2023

This post will likely win the title of our shortest. We spent two days in Buenos Aires and, on one, toured the city with Veronica and her wonderful driver. The city is less dense, and traffic more civilized than Rio, although we're not sure Veronica agrees with either conclusion. There are no captivating landscapes as in Rio, and while the architecture seems better, there is not much to photograph. In fact, we only have the Cathedral to show you. While we enjoyed Marcio in Rio, Veronica is a highly polished professional. She provided extensive history of everything we saw as well as of the country in general. We depart the hotel on 26 January at the absurd time of 5:45 am for a flight to Ushuaia. This is the most southern city in the world. It ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza January 26th 2023

Last day of the trip so we thought we’d go out with a blast! Another hotel breakfast (we’ve really had enough of ham and cheese!) and headed to Potrerillos - about an hour away from Mendoza and past a huge reservoir, one of the bluest bodies of water we’d ever seen - stark contrast to the dusty red surrounds and the ‘chocolate’ river that was feeding it…the one we were about to raft in! Everything sorted (uncharacteristically efficiently!) and got kitted up before we were put onto a bus and driven to our starting point. We were given ‘special’ treatment as we were the only English speakers but they went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and everything was understood. The heat was starting to build up in our layers of heat ... read more

It’s going to be difficult to leave here - beautiful views, delicious food delivered at all hours of the day, dishes done, reading, relaxing. Oh, and there’s puppies, maybe I forgot to mention the puppies?! Another relaxing start to the day with breakfast in the garden with a beautiful view of the mountains. Managed to find some energy to drag ourselves to the stream to cool off/get trampled on by wet muddy puppies doing zoomies. Pretty much the same. As relaxing as that was, lunch called and wine was offered…so naps were required. Some more relaxing and reading before the horses were saddled up and ready to drag the (ever increasing) loads into the foothills. Another beautiful ride with stunning views, this time accompanied by Leela, who possibly regretted her decision about 5 minutes in but ... read more

Iguazú January 2023 I didn’t blog before Christmas on my last adventure. I had no excuse, just too lazy, although an excuse did present itself when I caught Covid. However if I am totally honest everything went too smoothly and there wasn’t a lot to blog about! This time I plan to add to the blog every few days so it doesn’t become a chore, and as I am travelling alone to begin with there might be more to report. After a lovely Christmas with the girls and partners in Worcester then a week cat-sitting with Jet in Swaffham Bulbeck I took an early BA flight from Heathrow to Madrid. The plane only had 60 passenger so it was a calm and comfortable flight with a row to myself and no-one in front or behind. It ... read more

You would think that, in a country with a reputation like Argentina’s, that the search for meat would be an easy one! You would be wrong! Finding anything essential - cash, petrol, fresh food - has proven difficult, involving lots of queuing and uncertainty. Meat was sadly no exception. Today we ventured to the towns of Humahuaca and Tilcara - partially, like the ancient hunters and gatherers, in search of butchers and grocery stores, but also to see more of this remote and rural region. Our drive today was beautiful again - not as spectacular as yesterday as we were more concentrated on the valley floor, but the contrast between the lush green of the valley and the glowing reds and hues of purple and grey in the rocks made it even more stark. We drove ... read more

South America » Argentina » Jujuy » Purmamarca January 19th 2023

So our time in the jungle had come to an end - I don’t think any of us were particularly sad to leave the heat and humidity. A really early wake up and trip to the airport and a half-empty flight, and before we knew it, we were in Salta. An unnervingly simple car pick up process and we were on our way. Mercifully easy path to the freeway - lots of police stops where we apparently drew no interest - and a quick lunch empanada stop and we reached our destination - Purmamarca. Bum steer from google on the location of the hotel, but some bodgy Spanish from me and help from half the town and we found out abode for the next three nights. We weren’t able to check in yet so we had ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú January 15th 2023

Our last day in the south dawned…probably just as well as we were running out of socks and things to do in Ushuaia. We had a lazy morning lie in and headed into town for coffee (though we could still have been waiting for Thursday’s) and lunch. Wandered to the prison museum, and although we initially balked at the admission cost, we really enjoyed what was on offer. It documented the history of settlement of the region - founded as a penal colony in the late 1800s and the maritime exploration in the area, including a large exhibition on Antarctica. The old cells housed each little piece of the story. Retuned back to our cosy cabin before our final celebratory dinner - king crab. The girls refused to partake so Geoff and I shared one. It ... read more
