No dramas getting from plane to hotel. Rucksack showed up on the carousel - always a bonus! Booked "remise" taxi from counter in airport lobby. Big posters everywhere warning not to take a taxi with a tout. Could be the last taxi you ever take! Driver was called Hector. Nice bloke, no habla Ingles, but was determined to tell me all about B.A. Surprisingly, I actually understood some of what he said. Asked him who he supported. "River Plate", says he. Asked me my team. "Charlton Athletic in Ingliterra", says I. "Oh", says he, "yes, but what is your team in Argentina?" So, obviously I had to follow a team that mattered as well! And they call us parochial! Fobbed him off with Independiente. "Campeones", says I. You don't often get to say that in SE7. ... read more

Flew from Heathrow via Mardid to Buenos Aires. JD gave me a lift and said he'd pick me up from Gatwick on 10th March. Most decent of him, I must say. Made connection in Madrid with minutes to spare and settled in for 13 hour flight. Two shite movies: Sweet Home Alabama and The Tuxedo which were, at least, in English.... read more

We thought we were really smart, having found an e-mail cafe for only US$1 an hour. The catch is that it runs at the pace of a snail with a bad limp! Oh well, I will have to keep this short... We’ve been exploring Buenos Aires for the past few days. Went to a graveyard which was VERY creepy. It is where all the rich elite of the city are buried. Instead of your average grave, it is full of huge family vaults, some large enough to be mini-chapels. If you peer through the glass you can see the coffins inside. Some of the more ancient ones had the doors open slightly and we were daring each other to look inside. Many had steps going down deep into the ground, and you could see the many ... read more

Here I am in the main street of Buenos Aries. We had a massive thunderstorm last night and it is still raining. It is still warm though so we are wandering around in T -shirts and shorts in the rain! The last few days were spent in Foz De Iguassu,on the Brazilian -Arentina border. The youth hostel was one of the best I have ever stayed in. It was out of town in the country side, and part of a campsite so had beautiful landscaped gardens and a swimming bar with a bar playing Samba music -very tropical. We spent two days exploring Iguassu Falls. On the first day we did the Brazilian side. We arrived on the bus to be greeted by little strange little chipmonk-like creatures with ringed tails. They were almost attracting more attention from tourists ... read more

1999……….6wks SOUTH AMERICA-ARGENTINA, PERU 17th August, 1999 Buenos Aires I can’t sleep. I hadn’t realized Buenos Aires was so far from OZ and that I would get so jet-lagged. It’s confusing to know or feel what day it is. What I still can’t work out is that I was going ahead in time and yet when I get to Buenos Aires having travelled about 15 hrs from Sydney with transit in New Zealand, it’s still the same day. No wonder my body feels weird with feeling tired but not wanting to sleep and a bit of a headache. The international airport is 35km from the centre and the shuttle bus costs US$14 one way. The city was remarkably quiet because of siesta time but the peatonales (pedestrian malls) which go for whole blocks were busy with ... read more

(Approximately 9th) :) Es maravilloso. It's wonderfull. It's incredible, but you can spend hours admire it. And when you see the first floe, you start to cry. It's amazing. And if you're sleeping near from it, you can hear the floeswhen they fall down. Besides, in the summer the night cames at 23hs. I recomend it to all tourist arround the world.... read more
