This is a summary post in that the whole of the scenery down the West coast and inland has been absolutely stunning. Just when you think it cant get any better, you drive around the corner and an even bigger mountain or deeper gorge comes out. It's like this for hundreds of kilometres down the coast of the Southern alps and is voted one of the worlds top 10 drives. It's easy to see why. Check out some of our lovely piccies!!!... read more

This is the party! Three nights of celebrating the coming of the new year with New Zealands best drum and bass artists and a great group of kiwis. My friend Scotty and I drove up the west coast from Wanaka (about an 8 hour trip) to Inangahua on Friday in time for the preparty which was local DJS spinning at a bar in a tiny tiny town near where the festival was to be held begining the next day. Im pretty sure the town had never seen so many people or so much action and certainly never dealt with so much noise. I have never seen so many VW buses in one place! We camped in Scotty's truck for the night and got up early the next day to meet the other ten people in our ... read more

29/12/06 In the morning we went into Nelson and had a coffee at one of the cafes, and had a walk round the shops. It is a lovely place and it was very hot so made it more enjoyable. After that we decided to have a drive up the coast but on the way we stopped at Richmond because there was a market on. It was big and we walked about for around an hour. The only thing we bought was a couple of books for Aunty Tina. Then we drove further on to Motueka on the coast and had lunch then went along the beach and dipped our toes in the Tasman Sea. It was well cold and I couldn’t wait to get out. The beach didn’t have any sand and I ended up walking ... read more

Woke in Lesley's garden to a steady drizzle. Quick cup of tea then packed the tent and headed south. Stopped in Westport for breakfast and to check e-mail by the time we came out of the cafe the sun was trying to break through so set off south towards Greymouth (sounds inviting no?). Stopped at Truman track recommended by Lesley as one of the best short walks on the west coast - it was. A track down through native forest - rata, rimu, matai and southern palm trees intertwined with various shrubs including Kiekie (like a a small NZ cordyline which can grow on other plants eg in forks in trees), supplejack (the vine so common in north island forests, the ever present manuka etc ( David Bellamy eat your heart out). The path then wound ... read more

Its coming on Christmas and the sun is shining the sky is blue or was yesterday today its more reminiscent of Scotland - a scotch mist but its early still and the one thing you can say about weather in NZ its changeable. But to our tale after a very pleasant walk along 6 mile creek we returned to Murchison and headed out to meet Brian and Bella. They live some 11km west of Murchison itself. Their propoerty consists of a bit of garden, a bit of pasture ( Brian has 2 calves he's raising for the meat) and a bit of mainly native bush with a small burn running along between the pasture and the bush. We were made most welcome and spent a brilliant evening - a few beers, wine etc and roast lamb ... read more

Day 8 - Te Anau - Queenstown (185km) We head north to Queenstown expecting a nice scenic drive along the shore of Lake Wakatipu but unfortunately the weather has other ideas and we are treated to mist, rain and a lake that looks like the North Sea! We grudgingly pass all the scenic lookouts without stopping but manage a lunch stop next to the Kingston Flyer, an old steam locomotive, on the banks of the lake. We make it to Queenstown and it is absolutely dinging it down (more rain in one day than they normally have in a month!) so we stock up at the supermarket and hole up in our van for the rest of the day (some blog/washing catch-up time). Day 9 - Queenstown - Glenorchy - Queenstown (110km) Thankfully the following day ... read more

I finally tried West Coast Whitebait on my first night in Fox. Whitebait season has just finished and I had them in an omellette which is how they do them round here. It was quite strange to cut into an omellette and find loads of white worm-like things coming out; very good anyway. It poured all day on the full day I had in Fox, but I was determined to see the glacier. The shuttle bus wasn't availible when I wanted to go so I set of walking. I had been going about half an hour and was starting to get a little wet but I was able to save the other half an hour's walk by sticking out my thumb and getting a lift with a German couple on holiday up to the glacier car ... read more
