The day started with a fine weather and we drove north to see the famous Pancake Rocks. Not much to say about them but the way there and back was awesome - rocks on the shore with all kinds of shapes, and more amazing was the amount of green all around - trees bushes etc, and so close to the sea. Shiri wondered how this all survives with the salt of the sea and then, just about mid-day we got the answer - rain rain rain... I drove 200km in non-stop rain, quiet heavy rain. this part of the road (from Greymouth to Franz Jozef) didn't look as nice as the first one, but maybe we simply couldn't see anything? BTW, a short one about the roads here. I didn't see even one road with 2 ... read more

We got up early for our drive and rang the bell at reception to check out, the chick was nowhere to be seen and after speaking to another punter we were told that she doesn't ever show face before 09:30, now that was no good to us as we paid a $20 key deposit and I wasn't leaving without it, helpfully the other punter offered us the $20 and said she'd hand the key in when reception opened and get the money back, we thanked her and hit the road. On the long road to Greymouth, about half-way, Fiona started panicking that the key deposit was in fact only $10, there's nothing we can do now though, so if we ripped you off by $10 in Nelson please get in touch so Fiona can appologise. The ... read more

Right, I have 27 mins left before the cafe closes and I can't even remember what I have done on what day so I'll do a quick top ? list.... 1. Abel Tasman National Park This was amazing - no one told me that the beaches would be so amazing here. We went on a two day trip - one day hiking and one day kayaking - we camped on the beach and went kayaking right up to the baby seals. How gorgeous were they!!! The views were fantastic and the kayaking was easy. We went with the Sea Kayak Company and had a really chilled out guide. It cost the same amount as doing a freedom kayak so it was def worth it as B and I hadn't done any proper kayaking before www.seakayaknz.co.nz. 2. ... read more

Hi all Travelled over the Haast Pass from Wanaka to Fox Glacier yesterday. Wanaka very nice along the lake front - sat out and had a coffee and would have been nice to sit and relax there for a day but had to move on. Driving times are longer than you would expect despite very little traffic on roads but winding roads and lots of stops to look at views all take time. Arrived at Haast on West Coast at about 2pm and it started raining as we pulled into the local tourist office and has rained almost non-stop since. planned a flight over glaciers and alps for today but have rescheduled for 08.30 tomorrow if weather ok. If not we'll press on up the west coast and have to come back to do the flight ... read more

Arrived Jackson after a fantastic ride down from Franz Josef glazier where I had camped the night before. Had good weather on the way down and super roads too. Stopped at Haast Settlement for supplies where I chatted to a couple from England also on a BMW. Riding through the Haast region, I get a strong sense of entering a primeval land, and a feeling of total isolation, or maybe its the freedom and the adventure of it all. Leaving Haast Township with new supplies I head south following the coastal plain towards the he remote fishing village of Jackson Bay, where 50km later the long West Coast Road finally ends. Of course as soon as I get going it starts to rain, but I push on thinking it won't last, I pass the camping ground ... read more

Near Fox Glacier is the haunting and much photographed Lake Matheson. On a good day with still water you can see the reflection of Mount Cook in the waters. Its a nice walk too around the lake and if you are lucky you will get some good photos. Fox Glacier is good place to chill on a sunny day .... there are plenty of bars and resturants on Main Street to kick back and watch the world go by .... enjoy... read more

We hitched down to the Fox Glacier on boxing day. It’s more difficult hitching as a pair of guys but we got lucky. First lift took us to Hototiki, on the way we saw one of the other guys who had hitched earlier from the hostel waving at us from a passing van. A few minutes later the van came back, we’d got a lift. Dudi the Israeli hitcher had boasted that he could get all three of us a lift, and to be fair to him he’d managed it. Stayed at the Ivory Towers hostel. Another nice hostel, in a nice area, New Zealand has no shortage of nice cheap places to stay. Booked a guide for walking on the Glacier the next day. The walking on the Glacier was only possible with the aid ... read more

We arrived in Greymouth on the 23rd of December, about 6pm. Had a nice meal of spaghetti bolognaise, and drank some wine, getting ready for Christmas. The next day, we went bicycling down to the beach, Robin booked a train to Christchurch, she needed to fly from there on Christmas day. We went to the Warehouse a New Zealand version of Kmart, where everyone gets a bargin. We got each other Christmas presents - I got a Plastic Kiwi Policeman to live on my backpack and a water pistol - Anders got a water pistol and chocolate, Robin who bought the water pistols got wet, she didn’t have one. Got my hair cut, and said goodbye to Robin as she boarded the Tranz Alpine Railway. Went out in the evening with everyone we could gather from ... read more

Punakiaki is a small town on the west coast famed for its pancake rocks, stacked formations of thin layers of rock. When the tide is high and the waves have any strength blow holes shoot water into the air. Near by are several nice walks, beaches and coves. The Truman track leads down to one such cove. Many postcards of the cove are sold across the south island. The pancake rocks weren’t so impressive, we were unlucky with the weather and therefore no blow holes were active. The beach behind was really nice though. Spent the day walking with Robin and Anders. Had ice cream, but no pancakes.... read more
