It was interesting to work with Anthony and Berry at flamedaisy in Nelson as it had been precisely a year since believing I would probably not be working with glass for some time. I felt happy and comfortable to be working in a familiar environment again, although would often sense the stress and strain, generated by the pressure of running a business, directly from Anthony. Seven weeks of working with him caused a degree of unease, yet we created some stunning artwork, and visitors to the studio commented on our compatibility to make glass together. For the next couple of weeks I kept the furnace fired up, made beautiful glass pendants and served customers in the gallery etc. etc. while the owners went overseas for a family holiday. When they returned I was informed that there ... read more

The ferry was an experience. After pulling up in the queue near the front we (and the rest of the caravan queue) were the last ones to board, it was quite large and even had an onboard cinema that you could attend. Of course we did not want to spend our time anywhere other than by the large windows soaking up the lush scenery. The crossing went smoothly and we got chatting to a very nice woman (turned out she was a dairy farmer in the South Island and she was well accustomed to the crossing as her parents still live on the North Island where she grew up). She informed us that it was a good idea to head out on to the front part of the ferry as the views were about to improve. ... read more

My travelblog has been quite neglected recently as I have been concentrating on enjoying the comforts of settling in to a new home and focusing my energy on building up a busy social life. I knew instantly that Nelson would be somewhere to call 'home' for a while and I have even surprised myself at my achievements. Within twenty-four hours of living here I had secured a job in a glassblowing studio called flamedaisy and found a fantastic flat in Harper Street sharing with Marcia and Brendyn and their german wire-hair pointer, Texas. I was over-the-moon that things quickly started to fall into place, although also enjoyed the communal atmosphere while staying at Paradiso Backpackers in Weka Street of sharing homemade soup in the evenings, playing cards and watching a few footie games of the World ... read more

I have to give my mom major props, she left the beautiful California summer to the dismal New Zealand winter just to see me! I love my mommy. Like all great trips she was delayed, almost 6 hours due to engine failure in LA…thank Buddha they found that b4 they got in the air!! But with the beautiful technology my dad and I stayed in touch so I wasn’t at the airport for a million hours. It was really funny trying to get her to stay awake past 6:30pm, granted it was like almost 12am her time so I guess it is only fair. It was so nice to have her here because I got the call that I could move into my new flat so she got to help me pack up all my ... read more

Yesterday we went and saw the amazing pancake rocks where the sea was sooo incredibly powerful, the blow hole was a bit of a let down, as it wasnt blowing due to a low tide. We watched the water swirling around and crashing against the massive rocks whcih was really cool. We then were told that the road which we wanted to take North to Nelson was closed -ahhhh so we had to head back to Greymouth and go the longer way around - i think it was because of a land slide - not suprised actually as the roads here are unbleievable - windy as hell and hair pin bends galore! So after a long drive we arrived in Nelson and camped for the night. Today we headed off into the sunshine towards Takaka north ... read more

Here I am in Nelson NZ. I can no longer feel my fingers as I type this. The temperature is hovering somewhere around 7 degrees, a humid cold. This reminds me very much of Chile. The city is very nice, it reminds me of Banff quite a bit. Travelling to Nelson was quite the adventure. I started out on the ferry from Wellington to Picton. The water was really rough and even on the 8-storey ferry we were being bounced around. The scenery was beautiful and we saw dolphins jumping in the wake, which made up for the crazy lurching of the boat. In Picton I boarded a bus for Nelson and saw more of the amazing landscape. Once in Nelson I found my way to my hostel, Accents on the Park. It is the nicest ... read more

Today I left the North Island of New Zealand and crossed the Cook Strait by ferry to the South Island. The views of the South Island from the ferry were amazing and there were also some groups of dolphins swimming part of the way with the ferry. I arrived in Nelson in the afternoon and had just enough time to visit the Jewellery store which created the rings for the Lord of the Rings Movie and get to the geographical centre of New Zealand in time to see the sunset.... read more

Everywhere you turn in NZ people seem to be wearing and selling bone carvings based on those made and worn traditionally by Maoris. They are very beautiful pieces, so when I saw a bone carving workshop flyer and a weather forecast side by side it really was a no brainer. First step was designing the piece. We were shown traditional designs, but encouraged to make our own. I toyed with a number of ideas before finally settling on one based on a Dolphin and a Wave. Next we drew our designs onto a piece of beef bone, before trimming them with a hacksaw and a bandfacer. A miniature powered drill and sander was then used to sculpt this into the end piece. A piece of shell was glued on to add interest, before finally we sanded ... read more

At 6:30 it was still dark and raining heavily. Not ideal weather for a 2 day sea kayaking expedition, but despite this I was hopeful that we could still go. We couldn't. The trip was cancelled. Instead of sitting around drinking tea in the warm dry hostel I decided to go for a walk in the hills that pen Nelson in to the coast. First hill was the one known as the Centre Of New Zealand. Hopefully other people are suspicious to this too... that the 'centre' happens to be on the summit of a hill with great views. I doubt it would have such appeal if the centre of NZ was infact the location of a poorly maintained public toilet. But thats tourism for ya! Having been up to the Centre I walked/ran through the ... read more

I woke up at 5:30 with a view to climbing the hills above Picton to view the sunrise. The sight of sheets of rain beating down on the window pane lead me to retreat to the warmth of my bed, where I slept for a few more hours. The weather in Nelson was no better, so rather than explore the town in terms of attractions Emer (a girl I met at the hostel in Picton) and I went out for a swift half, which turned into a swift many more than a half... which wasn't really that swift either! Theres always tomorrow for the sights...... read more
