Well I didn’t make it up early enough to see penguins (more about that later). I reluctantly left Punakiki. It is probably one of my favorite stops on this trip. I drove northeast through the inland to Moteuka (where I would be kayaking from in a couple of days) and headed for Golden Bay and a hostel called Shambhala (sounds like an oasis). After 6 hours of driving I arrived at Shambhala. Its an alternative hostel off the main road to Collingwood. I had been told about it by one of the firefighters I work with and thought I’d check it out. Its located off the main road to Collingwood. Shambhala is right on Golden Bay. There is a trail from the house down to the bay that is marked by adobe archways imbedded with local ... read more

In the words of Catherine Tate's nan ... "WELL!!!" But it's OK. We're alive. We survived. You might not have been worried but for a while we didn't think we'd ever see you again. Here's the tale of Wednesday 1 March in our own words ... An energetic day in store - "3-in-1 Adventure Day" along the Marlborough Sounds (Queen Charlotte Sound to be precise). Jet-skiing, sea-kayaking and mountain biking. Grand. Left our oasis of calm at 7am and drove to Picton to meet up with Nigel (owner) and Craig (guide) who were to be our sole companions for the day. Kitted up in wetsuits again (could almost grow to like them - not) and off to the harbour for adventure #1: jet-skiing, a first for both of us. Whoooopeeeeee. Fun. Lots of. And a baptism ... read more

Well looky here - can you believe that we've been on the road for so long that we've managed to clock up 50 blogs? Nuts coconuts! But y'know - this old blog thing is a bit on the strange side. There's a definite voyeuristic quality attached to it in that all you lovely readers can see what we've been up to - photo's and all - yet we don't quite know who's been tuning in to each 'episode' as it were. Sure, we can see who's subscribed however, outwith the the stats on our home page (currently sitting at about 7850 hits) and email comms etc, we have little clues about who's making up our numbers. So....... we were thinking....just for this particular special edition..... how's about we go INTERACTIVE? Us Eggs are hoping that if ... read more

The first thing I'd say about driving up the west coast is WATCH OUT FOR the sand flies! They are annoying little hard black bugs that spring up on your legs as you dance in a phone booth trying to shake them off. Their bites are more itchy than mosquito bites, and stay for more than a week. Once one starts to itch you find yourself standing like a monkey scratching here and there. Why a phone booth? We drove up from Queenstown, booked a room at Hopitika, and had to call back to confirm at 6pm but there was no reception. For two more hours, no reception. AT Haast the places were filled with some sort of conference of farmers (?!?) aand advised us that all places were booked. So we tried our long distance ... read more

An odd night as I was woken by a guy climbing out of the window of the hostel room onto an adjoining roof where he stood in a howling wind dressed only in his boxers for what I can only guess was to have a smoke! We get the ferry to the South Island. The journey was ok, taking about 3 hours, but it was very windy which masked the heat and we ended up sunburnt. We were also too busy looking at the impressive scenery of the Marlborough Sounds as the ferry punted it's last leg to Picton. We arrived just in time to pick up the rental car from Ace Rentals. I have to say that my first impressions were bad, a rubbish old Toyota Corolla that had over 200,000 kms on the clock, ... read more

Our wonderful secluded bach on the beach What to say? Warm, sunny, alone on a remote beach we had to do what we liked. We kayaked, collected cockles and ate them, catered for ourselves with amazing sunsets. Amazing sunrises with similar for the new moon - an August moon for us. Three days of bliss. (Although the weather was custard for the middle day allowing us to explore in our rented car up to Farewell Spit and the usual touristy things. Lovely. (Photos later)... read more

Upper Moutere We were just outside the Nelson region but we stopped at the Nelson Sun Club at 'Sunrise'. We got soaked for the first time in NZ! Just once riding the 5km from the nearest shop to the house in the club grounds. We survived. Otherwise the weather was disappointing. And this is the area where Lesley has been looking to stay all the time we have been there. Nelson We moved into Nelson proper on Friday 10 February and the weather tried to soak us again but we just made it to the Information Centre. And then we could walk under cover to our motel in the centre of town. We are now off to the Golden Bay. The market was full of good food and excellent art today. And the Suter Gallery in ... read more

I know it's been a long time since my last blog, It seems I start every blog this way. Where too begin? We've continued having a blast, seen some great places and just had tons of fun. We left Taupo and headed to Napier on the east coast. It's a place known for Art Deco architecture, wineries and fruit orchards. We spent four nights just lounging around, walking around town, and going to wine tasting at a few wineries. Dave had stayed behind in Taupo because he had taken the van to Napier while we did the three day hike in Tongariro National Park. But we had a substitute ready, Dani who we met at the Beachouse in Fiji was working at the Stables backpackers so we decided to stay there. She was a good sub, ... read more

On the road up the Buller Gorge We had a good ride up the Buller as you might see from the photo. We took our time and stopped at Inangahua for the night and were unexpectedly pleased with the remote accommodation. Met a German cyclist called Stephan who had got separated from his companions somewhere in the south. We met him again the following day in Murchison. We stayed two nights there in a delightful bach called the Riverside Cottages. The food was good in this tiny place right in the middle of the mountains with nothing else for miles. And on to Tapawera for a stop before the Nelson region proper.... read more

We're having a much-needed lazy Sunday today - recovering from the carnage that was the Wellington Rugby Sevens tournament....also known as the world's biggest fancy dress party! See future blog.... No where we we...? Oh yes, we'd just finished the Queen Charlotte Track and were getting on a bus to Nelson for new year. You'll be glad to know that I'm in no mood to go into detail with this blog so here's a quick summary of our wee Hogmanay holiday in Nelson. We were invited by a friend of mine from work called Lotty and her fiance Brett who were invited themselves by Lotty's old work mate Sally who now lives in Nelson and we'd never met before. Sally and her hubbie Mike had stayed a day longer at their bach (holiday house) on the ... read more
