Finally got some glorious sunshine so me, Carling and James (nice geordie guy) went for a wander. We stroll through town and out to the harbour area, was such a sunny day, as we headed back in to town James escaped before we took him shopping!...Well....window shopping. We visited the 'bead gallery' where there was thousands of beands...was totally rammed with them, and some very bonny jewellery too...not very exciting. After lunch I took the 20 minute stroll to the centre of New Zealand, in the rain...short lived sunshine. Wasnt that remarkable, no incredible view but at least ive been! In the evening we went out to sample the night life...which was dead. We found an irish bar for a few drinks, a few games of pool then Jack, Zoe and I headed back while the ... read more

ok o its still pissing it down and still nothin much is open!! help!!! Carling and I went for a stroll, explored the little city, looked in shop windows and then resorted to the cinema! Saw 'Failure to Launch' Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConoughey falling instantly in love in oh so realistic fashion. highly amusing rom com but not a great way to spend the day. We had a few drinks and played cards with some of the girls off the bus. Love playing cards its an ace way to get chatting to people!!! Mary and Zoe played, as did Jack, they are travellin together and are such sweet people!... read more

Bussed it to Nelson today via Picton where we collected a load of people from the ferry who had doen the north island together. They have been travelling together for a few weeks and have all gotten to know each other. Nice bunch of people and the atmosphere was so friendly when they all got on! Got chatting to a canadian girl called Carling, shes lovely and seems to want to do similar things as me. We might go up on to arthurs pass from Greymouth for a few days. If the weather is ok. Most places have been shut today with it being easter Sunday and the weather isnt great in sunny Nelson...renowned for its level of sunshine...its pissing it down! Nelson is a nice little city though. We are staying at the Prince Albert ... read more

We got into Nelson a couple of hours later than planned and returned to the same hostel. This time it was totally different. The place was deserted and we got this grotty little room that was no where near as good as the last one we had. Knowing that Nelson was a pretty uneventful town we headed up the only hill in the area to get a panoramic view of the place. The rest of the evening was taken up getting boring stuff done in the town. It didn't matter that Nelson was boring as it was the starting point for the next few days - heading towards wine country!! ... read more

Nelson was the biggest town we had been to in some time but it soon turned out to be like all the other places in New Zealand - completely full of nothing much. This isn't a bad thing it’s just that big towns aren’t very big. We checked into our hostel, Paradiso, and then went for a walk round town. We spend that night in the hostel playing pool and talking to the other people staying there. The following morning we headed towards the Abel Tasman National Park. We left Nelson in a hurry to get to Abel Tasman for the good weather. We would return to Nelson for the weekend. ... read more

Ahoy there, shipmates! Last week we were beating to windward on a port tack and doing 8 knots when the waves came crashing over the bow. “A reef in the mainsail - and fast!” cried the captain of the “Maniac” - a recovering alcoholic complete with 16’’ liver transplant scar and a diabetic disorder that caused him to fall asleep at inappropriate and crucial moments. Our brave sailors had to clamp themselves to the jackstay to keep from going overboard as they toiled in rough seas to bring down the main and furl the jib. And still it kept coming - wave upon wave of….. well, waves, I suppose. In case you at a loss to comprehend, we’ve been completing our RYA sailing training this week and can now claim to be Competent Crew - we ... read more

So this is the longest time you've all waited for a blog. What can I do? Apple picking became my life for almost an entire month. You would think that this blog will blow you away, but I highly doubt it. Apple picking is not that entertaining, the only salvation for all of you...I've been getting up at 6:30 most of the past three weeks, so I once again feel the pain you all feel everyday. Well here goes, lets see how good I can make this blog... At the moment I am sitting here in Hokitika a small town on the west coast of the south island, two days since getting back into travel mode and let me tell you I live a very random existence. This town is straight out of Montana. This entire ... read more

After our awesome skydiving day, we spent the next day on the bus getting from Taupo to Wellington. Didn't see much of Wellington but don't think we missed much, or hope we didn't anyway. Pre booked our trips for Kaikoura and so hope to do Whale Watching on Sunday and dolphin swimming on Monday. Caught the Interislander ferry from Wellington to Picton on Saturday. Weather was gorgeous so had a good, smooth crossing which was a great contrast from when I did the journey six years ago when the weather was awful and really rough. On arriving in Picton we decide to head straight to Kaikoura. Our Magic Bus ticket goes anti clockwise around the south island finishing in Christchurch so we could do Kaikoura at the end of our trip, however all the guide books ... read more

Here in Nelson I was quite literally in the middle of my travels. Up on a hill is the geographical centre of New Zealand. So I thought I should go and stand there for something to do. The Nelson region is also famous for its wines and again I thought it would be a good idea to try some. And very nice they were too. The following morning we chilled out in the Abel Tasman National Park (or Table Asman as I kept saying, and not just necessarily after I tried the wines). Chilled out is probably not a totally accurate adjective as I undertook a gentle two hour walk from Anchorage (you never knew that Alaska was so close to NZ!) to Appletree Bay, taking in some lovely views of beaches and things, plus a ... read more
