the longer i am in this country the more i think everyone here is simply prone to gift giving. i don't mean gift giving in a material sense....i mean they are consistently imparting little life gifts. after melissa left i flew from auckland to nelson (on the south island) to meet up with michelle again, but had to wait for a few days before she could make it to nelson. at any rate, i have spent the past 2 nights with an great family!! marcus, jane, and 'wee' annabelle, oh an profit (the dog). remember rhondda and john....marcus is rhondda's son. he has the same sort of enthusiam for life that rhondda has. jane and marcus are both teachers....incredibly welcoming and warm....it's encouraging that they are teaching this country's young people. 'wee' annabelle is their new ... read more

When last you left these intrepid bloggers, we were getting ready to head out on a day's hike over the Tongariro Crossing, supposedly the best one-day trek in NZ, as well as the setting for Mordor in Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately, we'll have to take the guidebook's word for it. The weather had kept anybody from going this year, and we were no exception. After a day spent on the beautiful shores of Lake Taupo, we headed down to Wellington, known as the Windy City. Actually, it had quite a bit in common with Chicago, especially in the way it crushed Auckland, NZ's NYC. While the wind was constant and chilling, it wasn't much of a difference for us. After getting in the first night, we actually came across a bar named after our home ... read more

Happy New Year from sunny New Zealand! Hope you all have a great 2006 with lots of fun and adventures! Well I left Australia behind and have just spent 10 days in the north island of New Zealand. I met up with my Dad in Auckland and it is nice to have some company for the next month. Auckland was a bit wet but since then the weather has been glorious! Enjoyed a nice meal in the revolving restaurant of the sky tower in Auckland, went on a hole in the rock cruise in the Bay of Islands and spent Christmas in Rotorua. Christmas Day was lovely we went on a cable car, did a luge ride, patted baby lion cubs at Paradise Valley and went to a Polynisian thermal Spa! Boxing Day we went out ... read more

Day 3: 21.5km, 6 hours, James Mackay - Heaphy Hut Today was almost completely down hill. Heaven. We were back in the forest again but as we descended during the day towards the coast and mouth of the Heaphy River there was a noticeable change in the types of trees and vegetation that we saw, moving from predominately beech at the start of the day towards and increasing number of nikau palms at the end of the day. A few of the girls were starting to get some quite evil blistering and rashes but we still made steady progress. Poor Aileen took a wee tumble at one point which, with a few juicy embellishments, made for a good story later. We crossed lots more swingbridges, stopped for lunch at the Lewis Hut and eventually got ... read more

Went to WOW today which is the World of Wearable Art and collectable cars. It is such a cool place. It is a museum which houses costumes from the annual World of Wearable Art shows. All the costumes are really crazy and are made of weird stuff. Anyone can enter a costume and the best ones end up on the show in September. There are various categories but bizarre bras was my favourite. The designs had to be seen to be believed! Animal heads seemed to be a VERY popular choice. As well as the costumes there were the cars which were less interesting to me but still very cool. They had a very nice classic pink Cadillac which I liked the look of. I don't think it would be very practical though as it was ... read more

I'm still playing catch up with my blog entries.... here's what we got up to after xmas at Collingwood.... Day 1: 17km, 5 hrs Brown Hut - Perry Saddle When I got up on the 27th December I was a little nervous. Today was the day we started a 4 day, 82km walk through the Kahurangi National Park. The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealands 'great walks'. I'd done a couple of great walks already but they weren't in quite the same league... first there was the Tongariro Crossing, but that's just a one day walk, then there was the Queen Charlotte track.... where a boat ferries your bags between hostels so all you carry with you is your lunch. This was a whole new experience for me - we were carrying all our food, ... read more

The sun is still shining and it's Christmas! Had a brilliant Christmas for many reasons. The first is that we got engaged on Christmas Day. It was on the beach - all very romantic. We started the day by a long walk along the beach. We took lots of pictures just to make you all jealous of the fact we spent Xmas in a tropical paradise! When we got to another quieter cove Tim proposed and I said yes, yes, yes! After a BBQ lunch we went back to the beach and spent some more time bobbing about in our rubber rings (we are definitely getting our monies worth!). We cooked ourselves a big roast for dinner and proceeded to eat and drink far too much! Boxing day followed a similar pattern although we did drive ... read more

Very strange to be celebrating Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere ... although it rained all day so it felt like a 'real' Christmas. We started the day opening cards and presents and then set about preparing a roast turkey dinner, armed with only a bbq and a hob.... read more

It is Christmas eve! I have never felt so un-Christmassy in my life. It is really warm and sunny (2 days of good weather in a row!) and I am at the beach. We have booked into a posh (by our standards) place for next 3 days over Christmas. We can see the beach from our window! Kaiteriteri (where we are) is really lovely and has clear blue water and golden sand. It is a big bay so the water is very calm and safe to swim in. We have already been in the sea! We stopped off at The Warehouse (where everybody gets a bargain!) on the way to get some big inflatable rubber rings so we spent a nice while bobbing about in the sea. Jealous? On the way to Kaiteriteri we stopped at ... read more
