Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Yes brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr was ye old sound that came from my lips up in those cold mountains!!!!!!! So we rolled up in Mt Cook national park to a breeze so cold it would turn the devil himself blue! Nic - Out came all the layers and the wooly hat again.....It's so difficult to keep up here, one minute you have blazing hot sunshine and the next it's the middle of winter again, four seasons in one day....and that's when your not even in the mountains! The rain was pelting down when we arrived and put us in two minds as to whether bother walking or not, but we decided to brave it and go the extra mile and where yet again rewarded with a break in the weather....well, it stopped raining and the sun shone for ... read more

Mt. Cook and the Southern Alps from Above and Below Mt. Cook is New Zealand's Highest Peak at 12,349 ft (3,754 m). I took a scenic flight in a small plane over the Southern Alps and Mt. Cook from Wanaka two weeks earlier (45 minutes to the south by air). I included those photos in this entry, as well as my photos from hiking in Mt. Cook National Park. The Māori people of New Zealand named this mountian "Aoraki," or "Cloud Piercer." Glimpses of the peak are rare, since it's usually surrounded by clouds. I was very lucky to catch these views. I dedicate this entry to my Grandfather, who recently passed away at the age of 90. To Mom and Grandma - Know that my thoughts are with you... Love, Laura... read more

Arriving in Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand at an unsociable 11.30pm, we made a bee line for the airport transport which helpfully dropped us off at our accomodation for the first few nights, the Thomas Hotel, right in the city centre. Waking up the next day we were greeted with the wonderful news that Jenny (Kelly's little sis) had finally dropped, and baby Alfie had emerged; pink and a little wrinkly, into the world back in Blighty. We immediately made for the heart of the city (which is NZ's most English city) for some sight seeing and celebration. Christchurch was nice enough- interesting architecture and very leafy but we didn't waste any time once we'd picked up the new and imporved Madge, (named Kyle as she was almost brand, spankingly new), in hitting ... read more

Day 533 (12.09.08) After a leisurely morning we hit the road in the blazing sunshine in search of Mt Cook/Aoraki not too far up the road from where we’d been staying. We made a quick stop at the local salmon farm on one of the impossibly turquoise lakes of the area. We had great fun feeding the fish and bought some smoked salmon for our last dinner with Jean and Mike who we’d sadly be separating from the following day. As we drove along the shores of the stunning Lake Pukaki (which we’ve now decided is our favourite lake in NZ) we were lucky enough to see the summit of Mt Cook in the distance living up to it’s Maori name Aoraki which means Cloud Piercer. We stopped at several places to marvel at the mountain ... read more

Hey, Dad! Happy birthday, again! Yesterday, we wound up leaving Wanaka and driving up to Twizel. Nice little town. As usual, the people are sweet and the scenery is beautiful. We got here pretty late last night and got right back in the van first thing this morning. We drove out to the Mount Cook National Park to hike some of the trails out there. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. Mount Cook is the tallest mountain in NZ, and we got to hike pretty close to its base. The sky was perfectly blue and sunny. We hiked through boulder fields, across rivers, through the sandy flats, up to the lake in front of the Tasman Glacier, all the while eating fresh snow and gaining altitude. It would have been perfect for pictures ... read more

On the drive to Mount Cook we had beautiful weather and fantastic scenery. Just 1 hour before the Mount Cook National Park is Lake Tekapo - a beautiful still lake reflecting the mountainous scenery around it. We just went snap happy - everywhere we looked was a view worth capturing. At the lake we met a group of lads making their way down to Queenstown from Christchurch (a mamouth 10 hour journey). We were glad we would be having a night in Mount Cook to break the journey. There is a pretty little church perched on the rock face overlooking Lake Tekapo, and a statue a bit further down of a Collie dog....it was almost impossible to set off further than half a kilometer down the road before we stopped for more photos. Eventually we pulled ... read more

Hello everyone, That's right, we've had loads of snow and got stuck in Lake Tekapo yesterday - the roads were all closed and there was nearly a foot of snow on the ground! Anyway what have I been doing for the last two weeks? Well after Franz Josef I got the bus down to Fox Glacier, which was quite similar to Franz but less touristy - nice for a bit of peace and quiet. However, as soon as I arrived it started raining really heavily so I stayed in for most of the first day, only going outside to stock up on food supplies and to take some photos of the amazing sunset over the mountains. The hostel had a good selection of films so I didn't get too bored! The next day I managed to ... read more
