Believe it or not, a fortune cookie once told me “there is a true and sincere friendship between you and the mountain.” I still have that tiny piece of paper and have always thought how cool it was that a little cookie could know me so well. Spending 3 days in the tiny town of Mt. Cook, home of the tallest peak in NZ, deepened that friendship even more. I was very lucky to get 2 clear days out of 3 where 360 degree panoramic views of impressive snowcapped mountain peaks and river-filled valleys flooded my eyesight. Dramatic blue glaciers, iceberg filled lakes and many different hikes & walks filled my days. There is not much to do in Mt. Cook but set off on foot and explore.... and so that I did... I’m not sure ... read more

December 21, 2009 When Freddy showed up to meet us at the gas station this morning, I was somewhat surprised to see him. It would have been easy to blow us off, but it looked like he was actually going to follow through with his promise from yesterday to take us to Mount Cook Village. So we began the three-hour drive, which took nearly four since Fred drives slower than anyone in New Zealand. We were passed by everyone, but I reminded myself that at least we were getting there without having to hitchhike. Eric and I each slept along the way, still tired from the previous night of partying in Queenstown. We got to Mount Cook Village eventually, and found a place to stay before starting the Ball Pass Route tomorrow. It should be an ... read more

Gregg and Graham's big adventure with Ken and Brayden Dovestone - Nov 2009 This was a big one off the checklist of New Zealand adventures and one that they had tried to do several times before but the weather prohibited it. It is a bit challenging to write about it myself, as I was not there and Gregg and Graham don't seem to have the time to write. But the pictures say it all! This was a Father/Son weekend that turned out to be one of Graham's favorite New Zealand experiences. Not one for me, no electricty at Mueller Hut, LOTS of snow, and a toilet that was buried by snow. ... read more

This has been the longest time between blogs but we have a good excuse - the wedding! On behalf of my husband and I......... We were so excited to pick the family Dominick up from the airport last Tues, Arran is getting so big, not to mention cute, cute cute. We spent the night in Christchurch and had take away and beers in our room - we had friends again - yeah. Hit the road early on Wed morning for Mount Cook after the wedding cake and flowers were delivered. Had the cake on my knee the whole trip but it survived thankfully. Made stops at Fairlie (for make up trial) and Lake Tekapo (for hair trial). Wow - Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki that we passed were amazing. They are both the most amazing blue ... read more

I have been in Tekapo for around six weeks now. I have been outside of Tekapo for a total of about six hours during this six week period. Cabin fever, or just plain restlessness, has taken its grasp over the last week. I decided on this weeks days off I would skip town. I checked the weather forecast for Mt Cook and Monday was supposed to be sunny and pleasant. Seemed like a good idea, go to Mt Cook, do some hikes and get some nice pictures. Picked up my bus tickets on Sunday for a Monday morning departure. Sunday night I was talking to my good friend Lucas, and after telling him about my Mt Cook plans Lucas invited himself. I was excited to have somebody to travel with as I usually travel solo. Monday ... read more

2nd June 2009 This was most definitely a walking section of our trip. First up was a walk up the Hooker Valley to the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier. The beginning of the walk took us to an Alpine Memorial for those that lost their life climbing the peaks around Mount Cook. It put us off trying to scale the mountain. The walk took over swing bridges and offered amazing views of the the peak of Mount Cook. To be honest writing about it doesn't really do it justice, just take a look at the pictures and imagine being in our shoes. We had lunch at the terminal face, where the lake was mostly frozen, and sat in awe of the might Mount Cook in front. On the way back we saw things that we ... read more

joined a tour that took us from christchurch to queenstown via mt cook. highlight was definitely the helicopter tour. we had a lot of opportunities to ride in a helicopter during our trip in new zealand. i knew i wanted to do it, but choosing when to do it was kind of difficult. i was going back and forth between helihike at franz josef or mt cook. choosing to do the latter was definitely worth it. we really felt like we were on the top of the world. it was quiet and the view was just spectacular. it lasted only a few minutes (20-30 minutes). if you have a tendency to have motion sickness, take your medz before starting your helicopter ride. ... read more

We (or should I say Geen) booked into the Glentanner Camp park. What amazing views we were greeted with, simply wonderful to wake up to those snow capped mountains all around you. Having to stock up on fuel and provisions, it took us a while to get started on our intended walk, the Hooker Valley trail. With an estimated walking time of 3-4 hours we thought "piece of cake", but we should have known better considering our vanity and the apparent need for us to take a photo of ourselves with the ever approaching Mt Cook behind us at every turn! When we did reach the end the view of the imposing mountain was pretty awe inspiring and it was incredible to see the lakes completely frozen over and icicles dropping from the trees. We even ... read more
