An Unbelieveable Helicopter Flight! First, for those of you who checked yesterday for our blog update and didn't see it, we apologize. The hotel we overnighted at in Christchurch, The George, had a wireless network that was not functioning. This will happen from time to time so be patient and keep checking back. We will update each day whe we have Internet access. Today, our last day in New Zealand, was a wonderful day. We left Queenstown before sunrise at about 7:30am on a bus with a driver, an assistant and us! Guess it pays to go off season at times. Temp was a nippy 27 degrees F. We traveled north along the west coast of New Zealand skirting the Southern Alps until we came to Mt. Cook were we headed up the slope towards the ... read more

Glacier in New Zealand are not melting!

Just woken up from a very weird and vivid dream. I dreamt that we had been travelling round the world for 5 months visiting all sorts of exotic, hot places. It would appear that I have woken up and am back in England in late December. Outside it is very cold and crisp. Everyone looks like they do back home and the place seems very familiar. You can see your breath when you breathe and Mrs Deane is complaining of the cold. Unless.... ...Just maybe it wasn't a dream and we've ended up in a version of England on the other side of the world. Maybe we're in New Zealand. That could be it. In the dream I was having we were just about to leave Australia and had headed to Cairns airport to wait for ... read more

Mount Cook Australasia » New Zealand » South Island » Mount Cook By trav dhJune 9th 2007Next stop was Mount Cook (highest mountain in Australasia). Unsuprisingly we didn't climb it! It had snowed a few days before we arrived and there was still snow on the ground when we got there. We walked up to the bottom of two glaciers, Hooker and Tasman. The Hooker was a far better walk as we had to cross two swing bridges and navigate snow covered paths on the way. ... read more

Also Hallo zusammen!! Also kein Internet! Deswegen werdet ihr wohl auf die letzten tollen Fotos noch etwas warten muessen. Aber sie kommen. Gut, nun ... read more

Writing about Thursday I am losing count of when I last did the blog so I think I had just had the van delivered on Wednesday and had a trip over the Banks Peninsula to try her out. Planning the days and trying to get to see as much of this lovely country as I can, I have decided to see if I can have Betty for an extra couple of days and then spend a bit of extra time here in the South Island. There is a Trans Alpine Highway from Christchurch to the West coast going via Arthur’s Pass (924m)so I made that my trip on Thursday - I had in mind to do a walk there- having brought my walking boots all this way I thought I better use them!!! There are not ... read more

So I'm in New Zealand, on the South Island, which is just about as far away from home as I could possibly be. We go to see a mountain called Mount Cook which is pretty much in the middle of the South Island, one road in and out to go and see it. We get there and as you would expect it's pretty deserted we are the only two people there looking at the landscape, which is pretty spectacular like nothing I've seen before. When all of a sudden these three girls appear, they are English so I start chatting to them and I ask "where are you from?". This one girl, Kimberly says to me "do you know a place called Milton Keynes?".....what are the chances of that?!. Actually apparently the chances are not ... read more

2 days since Em left Australasia » New Zealand » South Island » Mount Cook By Matt n EmApril 16th 2007Yesterday I headed south to the Mauraki boulders. I stopped to see the penquins but they only come out at night apparently so I didn't see them. Headed inland and last night stayed in a small town half way to Mount Cook. This morning I finished the drive to Mt Cook and did a hike to the base of a Mueller Glacier. The glacier is hard to see because it's covered in rocks and stones but I've included some pics anyway. I'm now in Wanaka and running out of internet time, hence the short entry. In ca... read more

We managed to work our way out of Christchurch without incident and set off on H73 to our next destination, Twizel (pronounced Twyzel). We were taking the scenic route there which took alittle longer put promised better landscape and less traffic. So far so good with the whole left hand driving but what was harder than staying on the correct side of the street was having your steering wheel on the right side of the car. We were constantly hugging the shoulder and not staying centered in the lane. Also, the rearview mirror was pretty much useless as you naturally look right and always use the side mirror instead. This highway took us through more green pastures and rolling hills. It was too bad that the weather had turned grey and drizzly as it took away ... read more

We had some time to spare and decided that a detour from the coastal road would best occupy our time as we ventured almost all the way back across the South Island to Mount Cook. We stopped to view the snow-capped glacier peaks from the lakes before thundering down the dead end road onto a gravel track to finish the journey. Having had a fair bit of offroad challenges on this trip, therefore the posted speed limits seemed reasonable until we found the rear end of the car sliding round corners Tokyo-Drift style! An incredibly steep scramble up a path took us up to a view point in the Tasman Valley where iceburgs had today, fallen from the face of the glacier and into the lake at the foot of the mountains. We decided to ... read more
