Hi everyone, Wow, time seems to be going so fast now I'm into my last month of travel. I find I'm thinking more and more of things I have to do when I get home - very scary! I went for dinner with Courtney, Laura and Layla again on the Monday night, and then I left Wellington on 15th July to come to South Island, nearly missing the ferry on the way as the hostel staff told me the wrong time for the bus to the terminal!! It was a beautiful day for the crossing of the Cook Strait, brilliant blue [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, Well I feel like now Sa's written a blog I should really get started! I've been in NZ just over a week now, and I already think it's my favourite country that we've visited. The journey from KL to Singapore was okay, although there were a few times I felt I might not get there, like when the bus driver told me I had to get off as soon as we arrived over the border and get on another bus, which didn't arrive for over an hour! The city was quite easy to navigate though, and the MRT (Mass [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, So now we're both on our own little adventures and here's my blog for Borneo, enjoy! I left K.L Wednesday morning for my flight to Kota Kinabalu, in Sabah. The flight was brilliant. Air Asia were a much posher airline than I expected, there were reclining leather seats and the plane was huge. Malaysians don't know how to queue though (I've definitely realised a queue is a very British thing lol!) and as no-one had seat numbers on the plane there was a mad scramble and people were literally running to the plane to get the best seats! I [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Well time seems to have gone very quickly since we last wrote the blog and now we only have one day left in mainland Malaysia before Phil flies out to NZ and Sa to Borneo. Phil set off on the Sunday on the train from Bangkok to Butterworth, which took 24 hours!! The train was very nice though, lots of space, although no racks for the huge rucksack, which neither of us were very pleased to get back after returning to Bangkok. There were some interesting people in her carriage, including a Scottish man who used to be in [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! It seems to be ages since we last wrote the blog and we can't quite believe we've nearly finished in Southeast Asia now. When we finished the last blog we were about to get the overnight sleeper bus to Hue, in central Vietnam. Well, that was an experience - not the most comfotable of buses and we didn't get much sleep. It's called a sleeper bus, but you can't lie down properly and there's not quite enough room to stretch the legs out, so we were very glad to arrive! Hue was lovely - it's the old capital of [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, It seems like there's so much to tell you since we arrived in Vietnam. The place is so different from the rest of Southeast Asia. Thailand and Laos were relatively similar, so it's good that we finally feel we're in a different country. Hanoi, the capital city, is extremely busy and quite crazy, with loads of traffic, mainly motorbikes, racing around everywhere - quite different from Vientiane! We've learned to cross the road slowly, rather than running, which means the crazy drivers have time to avoid us. Luckily they've all managed it so far, although we've had a few [View Full Entry]

Down the Mekong

 Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane
Hello everyone! We're now in Vietnam but realised we haven't written anything about Laos yet so thought we'd better fill you all in. It started with the trip down the Mekong from Thailand into Laos. We set off from Chiang Mai in Thailand on the 13th May (Sarah thought this was unlucky but she was glad we weren't on the boat on this day!) by bus to Chiang Kong - very uneventful but lovely scenery and green mountains. Once we got to Chiang Kong it was 4.30 and we'd heard they charge extra for people trying to cross the border after [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! We thought we'd just write a short entry as we're off to Laos tomorrow and don't know when we'll next have internet. We've been in Thailand for just over a week now, again it's very different from everywhere else. We feel like we've started a completely new part of the trip. It's much more touristy than any of the other countries we've been to! The flight from Colombo to Bangkok was interesting. We arrived at Colombo airport around 9.30pm but our flight didn't leave till 7.20am so to begin the nightmare we had to spend the night in the [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! Since we last wrote the blog we've spent 2 lovely (well mostly) weeks in Sri Lanka - very different from India (friendly people, very green countryside and nice beaches). We arrived into Colombo Airport at dead of night and managed to grab a taxi to Negombo, our first beach place of the travels! Negombo felt like Paradise after India, but was actually not that nice compared with the other beaches we visited. We spent the entire first day on the beach, reading and generally being lazy! Phil ventured into the sea, only to lose her sunglasses due to the [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Well what do we have to tell you? Quite a lot really. India has been an experience to say the least! We began our long journey from Pokhara on the morning of the 27th, getting the early bus at 6.30am. The mountains came out one last time so we could get a last look - lovely! The bus journey was eventful! We got about 2 hours down the road and broke down - still not really sure why but it was something to do with the tyres. We stopped for around 45 mins before they fixed it, only to [View Full Entry]
