We went out to get dinner from a chinese take-away. It wasn't really chinese, considering they served fish 'n chips and burgers, but it was still good. We went down to the beach to eat; it was very windy, but nice. The seagulls descended on us like a swarm of carnivorous bacteria, but it was worth it. I' m also thinking about heading back to Auckland for New Year's. Stay there a while, find a job, see what happens. ... read more

I spent my first southern hemisphere Christmas at a beach-house, getting wasted with two very chill guys from the Netherlands and New Zealand. It was a family get-together for the holidays I had been invited along to, which I appreciate very much, but the two dudes and I kind of gravitated towards each other because we weren't part of the family. It was very different from Christmas at home - apart from getting wasted, that is. There was still a lot of great food, though, and ice-cream based dessert with strawberries. For Christmas. At the beach. With beer. I enjoyed myself probably a little too much. ... read more

I went on a walk today, which is the New Zealand way to say you went hiking. I started at Whanagrei Falls and went into Whangarei. It was a nice day, good weather, beautiful scenery. Very hot when I had to walk outside the bush. One wouldn't believe how may times I had to disinfect my boots, but it was worth it. I also saw four ducklings - I count that as a success for today. Anyway, the walk was only six kilometers, but I was pretty exhausted at the end of it; and my hip hurt, which is weird to say, because that makes me sound like my grandma. I just wasn't made for physical activity - my maker took one look at me and went "that bitch? She better stay inside". And that wouldn't ... read more

I arrived back in Whangarei yesterday - the family I'm staying with live a few minutes outside of town. The property is really nice; there are several greenhouses and fields. The child is six; he showed me around a little, introduced me to the chooks. We played some soccer. They have a very excited dog, and she jumps me a lot. There's also a sheep, who thinks she is a human, which is honestly such a mood, and also about 150 chickens, which is also a mood. After dinner today, we took a walk around the paddock. Saw some more sheep. I'm living in a caravan right now; it's very cozy. I feel like the dude from that song "King of the Road". ... read more

27th November Surprise surprise, it rained all night again. I retreated to the kitchen for breakfast. I used the 2nd rashesrof bacon and half a sausage from yesterday's breakfast to make sandwiches. Sorted my van, showered and dressed by 8.30. Ready to go but nowhere to go to. I leaf through the ever increasing stash of leaflets and settled on heading towards Whanganui with the intention of going to the local Information centre to find a walk. I see a sign for The Winter Gardens and Lake Victoria and pull in to the car park. As I soon as I get out of the van I am mobbed by about 30 ducks. I have coffee at the cafe then have a walk around both Lake Victoria and The Winter Gardens. I must say that the local ... read more

Bay of Islands 15th March Auckland to Whangarei Day 1 After leaving Auckland on the 14th, Valentine's Day, we had to look for accommodation for the night. We headed towards Waipu, a small township just off Highland 1 in Bream Bay. This was the settlement of over 800 Highlanders who arrived here under the guidance of the Presbyterian minister Norman McLeod. They arrived here in the 1850s after leaving Scotland following the Clearances, they came the long way round via Nova Scotia and Australia. A highlight of Waipus calendar are the annual Highland games held in the New Year. We needed accommodation so headed a bit further North to the town of Wharangei, visiting the Isite (Tourist Board info) just on the outskirts of town. This is when we found there wasn't much accommodation to be ... read more

We spent the rest of the time camping up north at Davies bay, near Whangarei Heads. We had superb weather and enjoyed swimming, walking along the beach, fishing, snorkelling and enjoying chats with Murray’s extended family. We ate so much freshly caught produce, fish and crayfish, we were well and truly spoilt. Murray’s extended family have been camping together for over 30 years, mostly in this spot. An amazing tradition that was a pleasure to be apart of. Thanks to the family for welcoming us, our kids ran around in bare feet, were in and out of family tents, had babies constantly on their hips, chatted, swam and were “kiwi” kids for a NZ summer. Murray and I do miss this type of experience for our kids, things we treasured in our own upbringing. Straight back ... read more
