Saturday, August 1st At 8am we woke to a beautiful sunny day. By 9am it was raining. At 10am when we arrived at Tony and Siubhan's hostel it was sunny again. We all got into their little Suzuki jeep and headed to Reglan, a holiday town on the west coast about 50km from Hamilton. The drive was beautiful, but as we got closer to Reglan the weather deteriorated. We drove through town and spotted loads of kite-surfers frolicking in the waves. They must've been freezing out there! By the time we got to the beach it was raining a little and very windy. Undaunted by the terrible weather we donned our rain-coats and set of for the beach. It's a wonderful big beach and we'd love to come back in summer. Today, however, was not a ... read more

Hey everyone!! Left on the Stray bus on Tuesday 30th and although I was really looking forward to finally leaving Auckland and seeing New Zealand, I was a bit reluctant to have to start all over again on my own, making friends and was a bit worried I wouldn’t have a good group but it couldn’t have worked out any more perfect…the first guy I met on the bus (I was only the 3rd person on) was from Fleet - that’s the first person ive met traveling who is from Fleet and everyone on the bus is absolutely lovely and by the 2nd day we were al saying how lucky we were and calling ourselves a little family! Nearly all of us are English apart from an Irish girl, a Canadian girl, a Brazilian woman and ... read more

Quick one - Napier Gannets very cool and smelly. Went to National Aquarium, walked along Napier beach, had nibbles with hosts every night and far too much wine (again!) Next travelled to Rotorua, cultural central for Mauri heritage. Had 3 days and nights here, in that time I did the following things: Geothermal wonderland, glass blowing, Mauri cultural evening, Kiwi Hatchery, Wildlife sanctuary, town tour, museum, NZ Mauri arts and crafts centre, walk on lake, (tried desperately to get flight on helicopter to volcano, but as on own and business slow I didn't get chance...gutted!), volcanic valley hike and bit of shopping. Amazing place, it was great to learn about the culture, history, mythology etc. from Mauri people directly and to see that there are palces where the skills are taught to future generations. Highlight was ... read more

Katinka... read more

We picked up our silver bullet car juicy Lucy and headed off on the roads. I was first up to drive - wooo hoo! They drive on the left here but have some dodgy give way system at intersections, like you have to give way to the people turning right. it confuses me so I tend to ignore it! ha ha! will see how it goes! We headed along the coastal road and had a lunch stop off at Thames (and yes it had a river but it's not quite as large as London!) we then headed up on the windy hilly roads which was fun - Lucy doesn't like hills by the way but we understand! - so we had a quick stop in at coromandel and then Whitanga and headed to Hot Water beach ... read more

Our last morning in Rotorua - started very leisurely. Had another great breakfast overlooking the beautiful lake Rotorua (we had eggs nad salmon on an english muffin, and ofcourse a great array of fresh fruits). Then about 10:30 we took off and drove north through Tairunga. The day was basically driving down scenic coastal roads and big green hills/mountains. The cloud cover burnt off as we neared the coast. Stopped in a little beach town for lunch - finally got dan those Fish and chips he was jonesing for. Then continued our drive up the coromondel cape to our location of hte evening, Haihei. We got to this great bed and breakfast - Haihei Oceanfront - wiht a beautiful 180 degree view of the most breath-taking ocean view. NZ coast is covered with a bunch of ... read more

I slept comfortably. There had been some heavy rain overnight but that, together with the sounds of waves washing the beach provided a very soporific backdrop to my dreams. I awoke at 07h00 and continued dozing for a further 30 minutes before stepping out into my chilled mobile bedroom. I have to admit that this morning’s wash was very pleasant - hot water from the van! Breakfast was an unusual affair as this morning I had no need to study the map for the day ahead. I had already decided to don the walking boots and spend the day exercising. After filling the van with fresh water, disposing of the rubbish and emptying the grey water at the dump station, I headed off - stopping 100 yards up the road on the beach. Tested out the GPS again for our drive to the Coromandel, not that it's much of a challenge for it - one road most of the way, but still, have to play with the new toy... Set off from the campsite at Orere at about noon and drove to Thames, the main town for the Coromandel Peninsular, a former gold-mining town named by Captain Cook after a nearby river. Went into 'Dick Smith's', the NZ equivalent of 'Dixon's', to have a look for a small flat-screen TV to put in the van (more gadgets), but they only had big ones. Stocked up on groceries at the 'Pak-n-Save' supermarket and set off again across the Coromandel Range to Hahei, on the east coast. Pitched the van at Hahei Holiday Resort; our pitch is a stone's throw away ... read more

Hahei, Raglan, and the Waitomo Caves (Tree Huggers, Surfers, and a Larvae with glowing poop) Hahei As we headed east towards Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula, the first thing I noticed was that this was going to be nothing like Australia. Once out of the city, I couldn't stop staring out the window. The landscape was amazing! Lush, green hills sloped all around with farmland and a few scattered houses. Roads were lined with fern trees, keeping the soil on the sides of the hills from landsliding on the "highways." Now I say "highways", only because New Zealand's highway system is a fairly simple structure. It consists of just under 100 roads on both the North and South islands with a speed limi... read more
