A little update of what we have been up to in NZ. Stu, Simon, Steve(Simons dad) and Wayne (Sys friend from work) went on a 3 day/2night hike around Tongariro National Park (Whakapapa Village, Ski area for the North Island), they said the hike was excellant but challanging at times, poor Stus feet proved this, they were covered all over the bottom and heels of both feet, they stayed in huts which had a basic kitchen area and a long drop loo. Bonnie and I had a hard few days we had Pedicures and facials!! We have been to the local beach several times and played beach cricket, water skiing/biscuits on Kerepero Lake with Carl and Vanessa, which was good fun. Stu and I hired a car for a week and travelled the East Cape and ... read more

Our mission was to bike a whopping 800 kms from Hamilton to Mahia Peninsula (just south of Gisborne) via the coastal road. This journey is a celebration of the opportunity that is life - of getting back up and again taking on challenges. A once extreme adventurist fought for his life after a freak accidental fall off a 12 metre cliff. Twenty months later he has miraculously bounced right back to a state of physical fitness he formerly owned. Both Stefan and his partner, Madeleine, have learnt appreciation for people with disabilities. The objective of our journey was to raise awareness of and fundraise for people with injuries, both physical and mental. 'Backup' is a not-for-profit organisation that helps disabled get out, get active and enjoy their life through adventure, fun and activity. Visit our website ... read more

I was getting antsy with 2 weekends in a row in Gizzy and needed to hit the backcountry big time. Good thing for me, there's always others keen on the same. Charl, Mags, Julie (a couch surfer who had been staying with me since Thursday) and I loaded up the truck with probably more than one night's gear and headed out to the gorge. A treacherous drive, but beautiful scenery, between Gisborne and Opotiki. We hiked the 2.5 hours to the Koranga hut, met some Zimbabwean and young kiwi hunters packing dead pigs on shoulders and deer in their backpacks. A bit too hard core for the tinned-salmon likes of us... You definitely couldn't be mistaken that you were in New Zealand, with the carcasses everywhere, sheep paddocks, massive Remu trees, immaculate hut (inhabited by full ... read more

Waking up in proper bed was rather nice, as Paul had to leave early for work, it was early start for me and Buddy too. As I left Paul's, not that far down his road I have found this free hot bath pools, ...sweet. I was so lovely and hot... nice start to a day... Once I have arrived in Whakatane unfortunately found out that swimming with dolphins is out of question. So I just went to a lovely look out point. Buddy was still very timid and not sure of himself, we had lunch, man never feed dog bake beans and eggs... I am telling you... Managed to have cuppa with this old boy who has stopped where I was, I actually not really sure why he stopped, but we had a lovely chat. I ... read more

A beautiful way to kick off spring with an impromptu visit to Hicks Bay on the northern point of the East Cape. My adventure crew (Charl, Mags, Debbie and Tim, and our new couchsurfing friend, Maria) headed up the coast on Friday night for a weekend in a batch on the beach. If you've been up the East Cape of New Zealand at all, you can picture it very well. Its common place to have to stop on the highway for cattle walking down the road. Sheep and lambs have a place on people's rickety front porches, where the boards are warped with time and lack of attention, horses roam wild on the beach, as do sea birds and children on quad bikes. Throw in a few scattered fisherman and dedicated surfers and you have Hicks ... read more

So after gaining some income, it was time to e mail some more possibilities of woofing, fortunately I was contacted by Angela who owned Waiora Gardens and the month of May pointed my direction even further North, to the Hokianga, Kohu Kohu. To an inspiring place of Permaculture and Gardening, www.Waioragardens.com.au Right here in the hills where the green fields ripen, The heartbeat of nature upon the horizon, Across the seas to the land of trees, Re-generated from stolen Kauri’s, To build homes for (UK&) Americans far from homeland Mauri’s. Arriving at the entrance to Waiora, tucked back & beyond in the Hokianga, Is a sacred place you’ll only hope to find, But its there as a portal to re-create your mind. You’ll know about love when you find this place, It’s been built by many ... read more

We are starting to get excited, as we start to count down to our departure and getting all the preparations in place. Starting to write lists, gathering useful things together and reading about our planned travels in more detail. The next couple of months are going to be very busy with our work, and other committments all demanding lots of our attention. So the time will go fast, and I think there will be a huge sigh of relief when we first hop on the plane. I have just looked at what we will need to do to get our call committments sorted out. Likely we will have to be on call for most of the weekdays of three weeks to make up for our time away. ... read more

Whakatane... Une petite escapade a White Island / Whakaari, the only NZ active marine volcano...
